Character history[change | change source]

Born as Anakin Skywalker, a slave on Tatooine who became a Jedi. He is converted by Palpatine to join his cause and to learn the ways of the Dark Side of the Force, defying his master Obi-Wan Kenobi. Darth Vader dies in Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, but not before returning to the Good Side, thanks to his son, Luke Skywalker. Luke was raised by his Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru on Tatooine as a farm boy after his father turned to the Dark Side.

Darth Vader also has a daughter named Leia Organa, who was adopted by Senator Bail Organa of Alderaan. Luke and Leia are twins, but Darth Vader does not know Leia exists until he mind reads Luke on the second death star. His wife, Padmé Amidala Skywalker, the mother of his children, died after giving birth, and the Jedi took the children to keep them safe from the Dark Side.

Darth Vader wears a black uniform and a deep black cape. He also has a mask that lets him breathe. It is never explained in the films why he wears the mask, except that he was very badly burnt on planet Mustafar in Revenge of the Sith.
