Perinaldo is a comune in the Province of Imperia in the Liguria region in Italy.
The 17th-century Italian naturalised French astronomer Giovanni Domenico Cassini was born here.
Geography
[change | change source]Perinaldo is situated at the source of the Verbone stream, which flows into the Ligurian Sea at Vallecrosia. The municipality is part of the Comunità Montana Intemelia and is located approximately 53 kilometres (33 mi) from Imperia, the capital of the Province of Imperia.
According to Italy's seismic classification, Perinaldo is classified as being in seismic zone 3, indicating a low level of seismic risk.
History
[change | change source]Perinaldo dates back to the 11th century and was founded by Count Rinaldo of Ventimiglia. During the Italian campaign, Napoleon stayed in the Allavena House in the village in 1797.
The village is the birthplace of the astronomers Giovanni Domenico Cassini (1625–1712) and Giacomo Filippo Maraldi (1665–1729). The Cassini family castle still survives.
