The video game was released on April 1, 1999 in Japan, September 10, 1998 in North America, October 23, 1998 in Europe and on November 15, 1998 in Australia.

The game got a 8.3 out of 10 from GameSpot and a 9.0 out of 10 from IGN.

It is the first game in the Spyro video game series. It is followed by Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage! and remade as a part of Spyro Reignited Trilogy.
