Ta-Nehisi Paul Coates (born September 30, 1975) is an American writer, journalist and graphic novelist.

Coates was born in Baltimore, Maryland. He went to Howard University in Washington, D. C.. After college he wrote for many different publications, including the Village Voice, Time, and Entertainment Weekly.[1] He was a regular writer for The Atlantic from 2008 until 2018.[2]

In 2014 Coates wrote an essay that was read and talked about by many people, “The Case for Reparations.” In it he gave reasons for why African Americans should be paid back in some way for their economic difficulties caused by slavery in the United States.[3]

In 2015 Coates' non-fiction book Between The World And Me won the National Book Award.[4] He received a MacArthur Fellowship in 2019.[5]

He wrote the 25 issues of the graphic novel Black Panther (2016-2018).[6]
