Note that those are the present Grandmasters. Please add to the list any past Grandmasters you know of. And remember to put the last names in alphabetical order. Ian ♠♣♦♥ McCarty 14:58, 4 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This list doesn't seem like it's up to date. Lembit Oll has been dead over 10 years, and Bobby Fischer is dead, too. Is there a more recent source we could use? Kansan (talk) 21:33, 14 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I tried googleing it and nothing comes up. This list will have to do. Maybe we should remove the word current instead? Ian ♠♣♦♥ McCarty 02:09, 15 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I found this: http://ratings.fide.com/advseek.phtml , then you put in "Grandmaster" under title. The list is very long, but it's straight from the mouth of the organization that gives out the title. Kansan (talk) 02:14, 15 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Another pointless list[change source]

As I mentioned under List of dinosaurs talk, it's really meaningless to have long lists of unlinked names. Why have them here, when a linked list is available in enWP? Also, this list is so far from complete as to be laughable. There are now about 1,400 grandmasters (FIDE list, active and inactive). So what are you going to do, put them all in?

Why not do something practical, such as list all over Elo 2700 to start with, linked to short biogs. That includes all the world elite, and then give a link to enWP's list (which is also incomplete, but does have about 50% links, and more information). Well, this was nominated for deletion recently (result was no consensus). Probably the community wants to keep such lists, which, I agree, are pointless. Pmlineditor  10:24, 3 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'm going to prune this, using FIDE's website as a source of grading data. Top players are worth listing; I interpret that as +2700 plus any who reached the final stages of a world championship. Macdonald-ross (talk) 09:40, 12 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Now done. It turned out that the list missed out about seven of the top 20 players in the world, including the current #1! It also included various players now deceased. It should be easier to keep up-to-date now it has criteria (as I said above, the list could not sanely list all grandmasters now the number is ~1400). Living ex-world champions at least each have a biog page. Macdonald-ross (talk) 10:36, 12 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Progress report[change source]

1. List of names is standardised as given name first, family name last. 2. All current top 10 rated players now have a page; others may be added from time to time. The ten players come from eight different countries. Macdonald-ross (talk) 12:20, 15 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Next step: all deceased world champions. Macdonald-ross (talk) 08:19, 17 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
