From Simple English Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

November 11-December 10 2006

Hello, Sir James Paul/Archive 1, and welcome to the Simple English Wikipedia! I hope you will be happy helping here. You should begin by reading these pages: Wikipedia:Useful, Help:Contents, Wikipedia:Policies and guidelines, and how to write Simple English articles. If you want some ideas of which pages to work on, read Wikipedia:Requested articles or the list of wanted pages.

Even though it is a good idea to research an article (like looking at the discussion page) before making large changes, please be bold and try! Any changes you make that are not perfect can be fixed later. We are also working most on core articles and the most common topics until this Wikipedia grows.

If you want to ask a question or talk with other members, you can visit our version of the "village pump" at Wikipedia:Simple talk. Administrators on Wikipedia can also help you with more difficult problems. You can also ask me for help. The best way to do that is to leave a message on my talk page. You should always sign your messages on Talk pages by typing "~~~~" (four tildes) at the end of your words.

Good luck and happy editing!-- Tdxiang 02:34, 14 November 2006 (UTC)

Newbie welcomes[change | change source]

Here! click on a newbie's talkpage and type this:

{{subst:welcome}}--~~~~

If you see any weird username, just report to me or any other administrator on duty. I will assist in its blocking. Cheers!-- Tdxiang 11:00, 17 November 2006 (UTC)

Sir James, you are still giving welcome messages to Vandal accounts that have already been blocked. (User:Cohnjarter) Please check the block log to keep up with usernames that are blocked for vandalism, if you are going to welcome new users. Thanks Blockinblox - talk 19:39, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

Creol and school article[change | change source]

OK, I'm here to give an outside opinion on this. The notability standards on Simple are a lot harsher than over on EN, so it's perfectly acceptable to nominate a school article for deletion. About Creol going after you over that previous incident, I really doubt that. Put yourself in his place for a minute. That issue has been effectively settled a few weeks ago, what motivation would he have to suddenly start 'wiki-stalking'? Also, I know you don't mean to be rude, but some things are better off not said. For example, if you wrote to me "Please review this proposal on Simple Talk, I think you're an awful admin and an even worse bureaucrat, but I'm fine with it so take a look please...", I would then be automatically turned against you for a comment that didn't need to be made. So, when you speak to Creol, even if you suspect that he is trying to test you, he may not have done, and will not like being accused of it. That is how big arguments start. Basically, think how things sound to others before you press 'Submit', because you can't rewrite it once you've said it. Keep up the good work on our articles, Archer7 - talk 20:16, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

Sysop[change | change source]

There are no formal admin elections. If you want to be an administrator, nominate yourself with a short statement on Wikipedia:Administrators. However, right now I don't think you're ready, you still have a lot of things to learn. There's another copy of this message on Simple Talk. Thanks, Archer7 - talk 20:29, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

Esperanza message[change | change source]

It is generally frowned upon to go around asking for people's votes on talk pages, but, you didn't know that so I can accept it. However, can you please explain why you posted it on the Esperanza welcome messages? That would automatically spam every user that is welcomed to Esperanza with your message, and that is just not right. Archer7 - talk 21:30, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

Archiving talk page[change | change source]

It is best not to simply blank old comments from your talk page without creating an archive of them. You can learn how . --ZimZalaBim 22:16, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

Oppose vote[change | change source]

I opposed you for my reasons stated on Simple Talk. Archer7 - talk 22:19, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

Copyright violations[change | change source]

Wikipedia can not accept copyrighted text; please read Wikipedia:Copyrights. I have tagged Reason for deletion as a copyright violation. J Di 22:26, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

Copyright violation[change | change source]

Hi, the article 'Reason' which you made was copied from another website. This is really bad. Wikipedia cannot accept ANY text copied from other websites or sources. Nearly all websites are copyrighted, and Wikipedia can get into really serious trouble for using their content without permission. Take a look at Wikipedia:Copyrights for more info. Thanks, Archer7 - talk 22:33, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

Well, we don't actually accept definitions over here anyway - we're not a dictionary - but if it came from a Wikimedia Foundation project, it is licensed under GFDL and we can use it. If it came from another source that is under a license compatible with GFDL, then we can use it, but must comply with the license terms (which may mean saying where we got it from). Anything else, no. Not all wikis are freely licensed. Archer7 - talk 22:50, 5 December 2006 (UTC)
I've closed the RfA. It's impossible for me to tell you everything, because you just learn it as you go along. You need to know exactly where to find everything, know far too much about MediaWiki (the software that powers Wikipedia), know how IP addresses are handled, and generally just know how it works. Edit here for a while, look at how things work and you'll pick it up. Archer7 - talk 23:10, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

Subst:[change | change source]

Hello! Don't forget to add subst: to the beginning of the template when leaving messages on user talk pages. Thank you. PullToOpen Talk 00:44, 6 December 2006 (UTC)

Not notable schools[change | change source]

Tagging the article had nothing to do with who created it. I actually didn't know who created it. I caught sight of it as part of several articles being edited by an user while checking the New changes. As you have noticed, I have re-edited more than a handful of your articles with wikifying, cats, and cleanups and have only tagged this one (likely these 3 if the other schools I tagged for delete at that time are yours too). At least tagged in recent history, I could have tagged before and forgotten.. I tend to edit a lot and its hard to remember ever edit.

As to the article itself, an en:wiki article helps some, but 2 problems I see there.

  1. With no inwiki links, I had no notice that there was an en:wiki page. Yes, I could have checked, but to check every article I edit to see if its en:wiki when its not tagged gets a bit plodding at times. The article really should have had the link on it.
  2. In some regards, en:wiki's acceptance of being notable is kind of loose at times. One of the things pushed here (and what the notable tag was edited to reflect) was that the article itself needs to show why it is notable if notability isn't blatantly obvious (ie. the country of China is obviously notable, it doesn't really need to say why).

Aside from the school getting a bomb threat this year, nothing about the article makes the school seem any different than thousands of other schools in many different countries. As it was only a threat, that would make it about the same of hundreds of schools in as many countries. Schools get threats all the time as pranks or kids trying to get out of class. Listing every school that got a threat would be an exhausting job. Had it been a real bomb (exploded or defused - sadly wouldn't matter) then certainly that is notable, had the school had someone notable go there, definitely notable. I just can't see from the article here or on en:wiki that there is anything notable, anything that sets this school apart from all the others. I has nothing to do with the editor, it is entirely about the article. -- Creol 02:38, 6 December 2006 (UTC)

Please...[change | change source]

Please please please... :) Don't remove comments like you did here. Thank you.-- Tdxiang 09:49, 6 December 2006 (UTC)

RfA spamming[change | change source]

Please stop asking other editors to vote on your request for adminship. It's disruptive, and it clogs up Special:Recentchanges. J Di 22:54, 6 December 2006 (UTC)

That is, in fact, spamming. I had really hoped you had learned your lesson last time. PullToOpen Talk 22:57, 6 December 2006 (UTC)
You're saying essentially the same thing as you did before, except that you took your name out of it. If people want to vote, they will. They don't need you sending them messages telling them to vote. Besides, one of the people was inactive. PullToOpen Talk 23:05, 6 December 2006 (UTC)
  • Please stop sending me messages regarding voting for you! Thaks. The life of brian 12:07, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

Re:Message on my talk page[change | change source]

  1. I don't trust you.
  2. Your actions in the past don't convince me that you are acting with the Encyclopedia in mind.
  3. Your large amount of edits welcoming users troubles me.
  4. Your actions on other wikis (like en.wikiquote) show that you aren't ready to be a sysop. There you go. PullToOpen Talk 23:11, 6 December 2006 (UTC)

Vote closed[change | change source]

I have now closed your RfA under . I told you before not to ask people to vote, but you did it again. It IS spamming because it does put people under pressure to say yes. And if people oppose you, they shouldn't be interviewed on why they did, people sometimes have reasons which they don't want to say. Try again in a few months, and maybe. Thanks, Archer7 - talk 23:18, 6 December 2006 (UTC)

Sir James Paul, you nominated yourself to be an admin a few days ago, received no support, and yourself recognized that your were going to lose, indicated you would study wikipedia guidelines and run again next month. Yet, you nominate yourself a day or so later? Please, take your own advice. Learn the policies; spend some time making constructive edits to content. Try again in a few months, if you want, but I'm afraid you have much, much to learn, and I'm afraid you have quite a job ahead of you to re-build trust within the community. Good luck, and let me know if I can help. ZimZalaBim 05:21, 7 December 2006 (UTC)
  • You seriously need more experience with markup, too. Here, let me show you how to add a category:

[[:Category:Categoryname|Description]]

Thanks and let me know if you need anything.-- Tdxiang 10:46, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

IP watching[change | change source]

Telling an IP that has made only one edit that you're going to be keeping a close eye on them is hardly going to make them feel welcome, and if I were on the receiving end of messages like this, I don't think I'd want to edit Wikipedia ever again. There's no need to leave messages like this on the pages of IPs that have made only one edit. The IP belongs to a school, so it's unlikely that the person that made the vandalistic edit will even see that message. Please think before leaving messages like this on talk pages in future. Tip on warning vandals[change | change source]

Hi, you seem to be eager to learn all the tricks of wikipedia, so here is a bit of advice on warning vandals. We have found that most of them really crave attention, so we give them as little as possible. If we warn them, we use a boilerplate template, and we avoid communicating with them as much as possible, if it might give them some gratification. They get bored faster that way and go away. There is no point in trying to engage them with detailed responses on their talk pages. Keep up the hard work and you can really learn a lot about adminship from watching how the current admins operate! Think of yourself as an apprentice and always feel free to ask questions if you're not sure about something! See you, Blockinblox - talk 22:01, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

Making new articles[change | change source]

Hello, I have seen you started to make new articles. When you do so, please consider the following:

  • Each article should have at least one link to another article. Articles without outgoung links are called dead-end articles.
  • If possible, you should add an interwiki link. This is a link to another language version of Wikipedia. For the article Sacred heart of jesus that you created, I added an interwiki link to en:Sacred Haeart, which seems to describe the same thing.
  • Also, we use some Markup in our articles. You should do, too.

Just be aware of these things when you make new articles. -- Eptalon 23:24, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

Respect[change | change source]

In my honest opinion, the best way to gain respect is through concentrating on improving and maintaining the encyclopedia instead of worrying about gaining respect.--TBCΦtalk? 23:26, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

Edit summaries[change | change source]

Please use the edit summary box to summarise edits that you make. I've looked through your contributions, and the only edit summaries I can see are automated ones. Thanks. J Di 23:49, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

More advice on Vandal fighting[change | change source]

If you haven't yet, please take a minute to read Wikipedia:Vandalism. It gives some great pointers on what templates to use, and when. If you follow these, I know you can be a great vandal-fighter! Blockinblox - talk 23:59, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

Please...[change | change source]

Please, as I mentioned before, add subst: in your templates. Thank you. PullToOpen Talk 00:41, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

My "Good Work"[change | change source]

Thank you. A barnstar? I will try. --AbbyItalia 02:20, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

Okely dokely. --Abby 23:03, 8 December 2006 (UTC)
My friend, could you please tell me where to find an edit counter? Bless your gracious heart.--Abby 01:23, 9 December 2006 (UTC)
I couldn't get it work. :-( Thank you and god bless you.--Abby 01:42, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

Re: Mark your articles stubs[change | change source]

As you can see in the history, the article 509 is not mine (is not created by me). My interwiki bot just added interlanguage links.

--Chlewey 13:57, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

Actually, Chlewey's right. Look carefully, it was started by Hailey C. Shannon (strange, they normally remember to stub articles!). Chlewey's bot just adds missing links between languages. Archer7 - talk 21:04, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

Barnstar[change | change source]

Barnstar Congratulations: You have been given a Barnstar!

For being nice & "blessing" various users (like me), I award you this barnstar! Congrats and may God shine on you! :-) MoglinFiend 23:17, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

Python[change | change source]

Just curious as to why you chose to delete the example from the article python. The information showed both an example of the language and the comment about the creator using Monty Python references in it. -- Creol 02:44, 10 December 2006 (UTC)
