Yoda has lived for over 900 years and not much of his history before Episode I: The Phantom Menace is known. He is an alien, but his race and home planet remains unknown. He speaks the same language as everyone else but says his sentences sort of backwards. For example, "Teach you, I will" instead of "I will teach you". Yoda speaks this way in order to engage his listeners, and director George Lucas' intention to portray him as a wise character.

Yoda is the oldest and wisest member of the Jedi Council. Even though he is very small, he is very good with a lightsaber and uses the 4th jedi style known as Ataru.

When Luke Skywalker encounters him on Dagoba in The Empire Strikes Back, Yoda pretends to be a mischievous local in order to test Luke's patience; an essential thing for any Jedi. Yoda later reveals himself to be the Jedi Master that Luke is seeking out, and agrees to begin training him.

In Return of the Jedi, Yoda passes away from old age at 900 years old, having been overcome with illness.

Throughout the Prequel Trilogy, Yoda serves on the Jedi Council, advising Jedi Knights and such. Yoda does battle with the Seperatist leader Count Dooku and the Sith Emperor Darth Sidious, before going into exile following Order 66; the takeover of the Galactic Republic and the planned extermination of all Jedi.
