"Easy on Me" is a song by English singer Adele from her fourth studio album 30 (2021). Adele wrote the song with its producer, Greg Kurstin. Columbia Records released it as the album's lead single on 15 October 2021. It is a minimally produced pop ballad set to a prominent, sombre piano and propelled by sparse bass beats. Expressing themes of nostalgia, regret, and forgiveness, the lyrics represent Adele's plea to her son, in which she details her struggles with her dissolved marriage and requests him to be kind to her.

The song received positive reviews from critics, most of whom praised the poignant lyrics and vocals, while some felt it is not as emotionally resonant as Adele's previous singles. In the United Kingdom and United States, the song marked Adele's third and fifth chart toppers, respectively. "Easy on Me" broke the Spotify and Amazon Music records for the most streams for a song in both a day and a week. It became the longest running number-one song on the US Billboard Hot 100 by a female artist in the 2020s decade, with ten non-consecutive weeks atop the chart in 2021-2022. It topped the singles charts in 29 countries across the globe, becoming the sixth-bestselling song of 2022 in the world. It is certified diamond in France and multiplatinum in thirteen additional countries.

An accompanying music video, directed by Canadian filmmaker Xavier Dolan and shot in Sutton, Quebec, was released on 15 October 2021, continuing the setting established in the music video for Adele's 2015 song "Hello", where she is seen entering a furnished house. In the video, Adele vacates the house and drives off in a truck as a pile of sheet music flies out of it, littering the road. A duet rendition with Chris Stapleton was featured on Target and Japanese editions of 30 and was released to country radio in the US on 19 November 2021. The solo version won the Brit Award for Song of the Year at the Brit Awards 2022 and the Grammy Award for Best Pop Solo Performance at the 65th Grammy Awards.

Background and release[change | change source]

Adele had begun working on her fourth studio album by 2018.[1] She filed for divorce from her husband, Simon Konecki, in September 2019,[2] which inspired the album. After experiencing anxiety, Adele undertook therapy sessions and mended her estranged relationship with her father.[3] The years following the divorce plagued her, especially due to the effect it had on her son. Adele decided to have regular conversations with him, which she recorded following advice from her therapist.[3][4] These conversations inspired her return to the studio and the album took shape as a body of work that would explain to her son why she left his father.[3]

On 1 October 2021, multiple posters and projections stating "30" appeared on significant landmarks and buildings in different cities around the world.[5] Instalments of the logo were largely linked to the title of Adele's upcoming studio album.[6][7] On 4 October, the singer's social media accounts were updated for the first time in months.[8] The following day, Adele teased the song and its music video through an instrumental clip she posted on her social media.[9] The black-and-white teaser shows Adele putting a cassette tape into the tape deck of a truck and turning up the volume. She then drives off with the windows rolled down, while piles of sheet music fly out of the windows.[10][11] Billboard writer Gil Kaufman thought the visuals were "Adele to the core".[12] The teaser was widely compared to the music video of Adele's previous lead single, "Hello" (2015).[13] The teaser clip of the song garnered over 17 million views, becoming the most viewed clip by a female artist on Twitter.[source?]

During an interview with Vogue, it was revealed that long-time collaborator Greg Kurstin worked on the song.[14] The staff at Capital FM interpreted the song title as documenting the "start of a blossoming relationship".[13] On 9 October, the singer shared a 40-second preview of the song via Instagram Live.[15] "Easy on Me" was released on 15 October 2021, to all digital music platforms.[10] It marked the first single by Adele in nearly five years.[5]

Composition and lyrics[change | change source]

"Easy on Me" is three minutes and 44 seconds long.[16] Kurstin produced the song and engineered it with Alex Pasco and Julian Burg. He plays bass guitar, kick drum, and piano. Tom Elmhirst mixed the song at Electric Lady Studios in New York, and Randy Merrill mastered it at Sterling Sound in New Jersey.[17]

"Easy on Me" is a piano-driven pop ballad joined by bass drum beats halfway.[18] The song's chorus consists of its title sung in prominently elongated vocal runs.[19] The song opens with a solo piano, which leads into the vocals.[20]

Lyrically, Adele addresses her nine-year-old son Angelo in "Easy on Me", explaining to him her divorce from his father and beseeching him to be "easy on [her]".[21] According to Stephanee Wang writing for Nylon, Adele wrote the lyrics in reaction to her divorce proceedings stating: "In 2019, the story broke that after 11 years together, she and her ex-husband, Simon Konecki, had separated, with their divorce getting finalized in March 2021." Wang said the lyrics directly speak to Angelo, "as [Adele] tries to explain to him why she decided to split from his father and choose a new path for the two of them." Adele had also previously stated: "I just felt like I wanted to explain to [Angelo], through this record, when he's in his twenties or thirties, who I am and why I voluntarily chose to dismantle his entire life in the pursuit of my own happiness. It made him really unhappy sometimes. And that's a real wound for me that I don't know if I'll ever be able to heal."[22]

Critical reception[change | change source]

Template:Song ratings

"Easy on Me" received widely positive reviews from music critics.[23] Neil McCormick of The Daily Telegraph called the song a "bold comeback single", contrasting its simple piano arrangement with the sleek power ballad production of "Hello". He said Adele possesses a heartfelt voice, one "that digs deepest into the soul of the world."[24] Evening Standard writer Jochan Embley lauded "Easy on Me" for its plaintive piano, elegant vocals, and "lilting" melodies. He said the song is a testament to Adele's resistance to pop music trends, avoiding "bombastic hyperpop or anodyne reggaeton" and staying true to her style. Nevertheless, Embley felt the song "doesn't quite match the mascara-streaked sorrow of 'Someone like You' (2011), or the soaring emotional heights of 'Hello'. But it is just about as powerful."[25]

NME's Nick Levine proclaimed "Adele's has never sounded better" than on "Easy on Me", making a comeback with a "slice of classic Adele balladry."[21] Music critic Alexandra Pollard, writing for The Independent, opined that "Easy on Me" has Adele "addressing her nine-year-old son, attempting to explain to him why she chose to take apart the life he knew." Pollard admired the "raspy" vocals, sentimental lyrics, polished sound, and the piano composition evocative of "Exile" (2020) by Taylor Swift and Bon Iver. He nevertheless found the chorus of "Easy on Me" less catchy than that of "Hello".[26] In his The Guardian review, music journalist Alexis Petridis highlighted the typical "Adele-esque" sound of the song, consisting of soulful vocals and relatable lyrics, and added that, though "Easy on Me" is not as arresting as "Someone like You", it is still better than some forgettable tracks on 25 (2015).[27]

Fiona Sturges of i hailed it as a "heartfelt, anthemic" song that puts Adele's "remarkable instrument"—her voice—at the forefront; later in the review, Sturges expressed her concern over how the song's "slightly over-produced sheen" prevents it from being more heartaching.[28] Pitchfork critic Cat Zhang wrote "Easy on Me" sticks to a classic formula, "for better or worse". Zhang praised Adele's vocal delivery, and deemed the song a "stirring ballad" even though it "isn't really treading new ground within [Adele's] own discography".[19] Dubbing it a "great tune" that is not as impressive as Adele's previous lead singles, The Times' Will Hodgkinson said "Easy on Me" is "nice and accomplished" but felt "a sheen of thoroughly American professionalism that stops the emotions from really hitting home in the way they did on "Someone like You"."[29]

Year-end lists[change | change source]

Publications included "Easy on Me" in their list of the best songs of 2021. Billboard placed the song at number 14, and Katie Atkinson described it as an unguarded musical message to Adele's son which brought back "the peerless vocal delivery fans had desperately missed".[30] The Forty-Five listed it at number 26, and Charlie Gunn thought she "did what Adele does best" but "on her [own] terms".[31] NME included "Easy on Me" at the same spot, and they believed it was similar to Adele's previous work but her voice sounded "better than ever".[32] Consequence placed the song at number 27, and Paolo Ragusa stated that she proved "she's one of the best living vocalists".[33] It was also included in an unranked list by Vogue.[34]

Upon release, "Easy on Me" achieved success on streaming platforms. It became the most streamed song on Spotify, both in a day[a] and a single week.[b][47] In the United Kingdom, "Easy on Me" opened with 3.2 million Spotify streams, the most received by any song in a day.[47] It also broke the record for the most streamed song in a single week in the country, with 24 million streams.[48] On Amazon Music, it earned the most first-day streams globally and the most first-day Alexa requests for any song in the platform's history.[49] "Easy on Me" debuted at number 195 on the Billboard Global 200 with just five hours of tracking and became Adele's first song to reach the chart's summit the following week. That week, it sold 136,300 downloads, the third-largest sales week for any song on that chart, and earned 178.2 million streams, the second-largest streaming week. It also became the second number one song in history to double the chart points of the number two.[50]

In the United States, "Easy on Me" debuted at number 68 on the Billboard Hot 100 with its first five hours of tracking.[51] The following week, it became Adele's fifth chart-topping single. It also debuted at number one on the Digital Song Sales and Streaming Songs charts, and number four on Radio Songs where it earned the highest debut ever.[52] "Easy on Me" recorded the most first-week plays among all songs in US radio history and became the first to be most-added on five radio formats in a single week.[53] Billboard named it one of the biggest number one singles "of the last 30 years".[54] The song reached number one on the Billboard Adult Contemporary airplay chart, becoming Adele's sixth leader on the list and the quickest trajectory to number one for a non-holiday song since "Hello".[55] During its sixth week on the Hot 100, Adele earned simultaneous top-five placements with "Easy on Me" at number one and "Oh My God" debuting at number five.[56] "Easy on Me" stayed at number one for ten weeks, tying "Hello" as Adele's longest-running number one song on the Hot 100.[57] In its fourteenth week, "Easy on Me" became the first song to surpass 100 million in radio reach since the Weeknd's "Blinding Lights" (2019) one and a half year earlier.[58] The Recording Industry Association of America certified it 4× Platinum in November 2022.[59]

In the United Kingdom, "Easy on Me" debuted at number one on the Official Singles Chart on the chart issued for 28 October 2021. With 217,300 units, it marked the highest first week sales for any song since 2017.[48] "Easy on Me" spent eight nonconsecutive weeks at number one, becoming her longest-running number one single in the UK.[60][61] The British Phonographic Industry certified it 3× Platinum in June 2023.[62] "Easy on Me" debuted atop Australia's ARIA Singles Chart, becoming her third song to reach the position.[63] It spent four weeks at the summit and received a 6× Platinum certification from the Australian Recording Industry Association.[64][65] In Canada, "Easy on Me" spent eight weeks at number one on the Canadian Hot 100.[66] Music Canada certified it 3× Platinum in January 2022.[67] Elsewhere, "Easy on Me" reached number one in Austria,[68] Belgium,[69] Costa Rica,[70] Croatia,[71] Czech Republic,[72] Denmark,[73] Germany,[74] Iceland,[75] Ireland,[76] Israel,[77] Italy,[78] Lithuania,[79] Malaysia,[80] the Netherlands,[81] New Zealand,[82] Norway,[83] Singapore,[84] Slovakia,[85] South Africa,[86] Sweden,[87] and Switzerland.[88] The song was certified 2× Diamond in Brazil,[89] Diamond in France,[90] 3× Platinum in Portugal and Switzerland,[91][92] 2× Platinum in Denmark,[93] Italy,[94] Mexico,[95] New Zealand,[96] Poland,[97] and Sweden,[98] Platinum in Belgium,[99] Germany,[100] Spain,[89] and Greece,[101] and Gold in Austria.[102]

Music video[change | change source]

Xavier Dolan, who had previously directed the music video for "Hello", also directed the one for "Easy on Me". The latter was filmed in the same house as "Hello", at the Chemin Jordan and Domaine Dumont Chapelle Ste-Agnès in Sutton, Quebec, on 15 and 16 September 2021.[103][104][105] The video starts black and white before changing to full colour midway. According to Slant Magazine's Alexa Camp, it "picks up where 'Hello' left off".[18] Adele gazes across the empty house and outside the window before packing up her belongings, putting on sunglasses, and moving out.[105][106] She talks with someone on a cellphone[107][108] and inserts a cassette into the tape deck of a furniture truck, which plays "Easy on Me".[28][109] Adele mourns the end of her own marriage while driving away and spectating a separate couple's engagement celebration as several pages of sheet music fly out of the car's windows.[28][105][110]

The video was released on 15 October 2021 at midnight UK time to 200,000 viewers during the premiere. It rapidly garnered views, reaching 12 million within 12 hours and 90 million within six days of release.[106][110] Several critics thought it referenced other Adele music videos, including "Hello", "Rolling in the Deep", and "Chasing Pavements".[110][108][107] Parade's Rose Maura Lorre thought it "plays out like a sequel" to "Hello" and compared a chair in it to the one in the "Rolling in the Deep" music video.[108] Sophia McFarland of The Spokesman-Review believed it was "a cinematic masterpiece in itself".[110] BBC News' Mark Savage opined the transition from black and white to colours represented "the sound of a woman who has dismantled her entire world, realising that she needn't feel guilty for putting herself first".[111] A video of bloopers from the production of the music video was released on 4 November 2021.[109]

Live performances and cover versions[change | change source]

Adele performed "Easy on Me" live for the first time during her CBS special Adele One Night Only (2021).[112] She reprised the song at the 23rd NRJ Music Awards on 20 November 2021.[113] Adele hit an incorrect note during her first attempt at singing it for her ITV special An Audience with Adele (2021) and restarted the performance: "I'm shitting myself."[114] She performed "Easy on Me" during her British Summer Time concerts on 1 and 2 July 2022.[115] Adele included the song in the set list for her concert residency Weekends with Adele.[116][117] She wore a full-length black gown and sang afront a coral green backdrop. While reviewing the show on 18 November 2022, The New York Times' Lindsay Zoladz believed Adele seemed nervous and "relied a bit too heavily on encouraging the crowd to sing her lyrics", and Harper's Bazaar's Bianca Betancourt thought she "appeared visibly emotional" before it.[118][119][120]

Several artists recorded cover versions of "Easy on Me". Kanye West and the Sunday Service Choir performed a cover with changed lyrics, as a tribute to Virgil Abloh after he passed away on 28 November 2021.[121][122] Chloe Bailey uploaded a cover of the song on 9 December 2021, which included whistle tones and vocal runs; Uproxx's Wongo Okon commented that she "shows no issue in being able to take on the difficult track".[123][124] On 4 January 2022, Travis Barker released a cover, on which he played the drums[125][126] and guitar[127] and transformed it into a rock ballad.[128] The Vitamin String Quartet, whose violin player Leah Zeger had accompanied Adele during the Adele One Night Only performance, released a version of "Easy on Me" with string instruments on 4 March 2022.[129] Keith Urban introduced his acoustic guitar cover of the song during a March 2022 show: "I would like to make a special dedication tonight, to somebody I just absolutely adore as a performer, as a songwriter, a trailblazer, [...] We love you Adele, oh yes we do."[130][131] In July 2023, 13-year-old musician Nandi Bushell shared her cover of it; she noted in the caption that it was her first video "singing and playing piano at the same time".[132][133][134]
