Farid Azarkan (Arabic: فريد ازركان ; born 16 October 1971) is a Dutch businessman and politician of the DENK party.

Politics[change | change source]

DENK won seats in the House of Representatives for the first time in the 2017 Dutch general election. Thanks to this result, Azarkan and fellow party members Tunahan Kuzu and Selçuk Öztürk were sworn in on behalf of DENK on 23 March 2017. He has been an MP ever since, and has also become both parliamentary leader on 21 March 2020 and – as successor of Kuzu – party leader on 26 September 2020.[1]

He leaded DENK into the 2021 Dutch general election in March 2021.

Background[change | change source]

Azarkan is of Moroccan origin, was born in Ighmiren (Northeast Morocco) and moved to the Netherlands at the age of eight.

He worked in various commercial jobs, at the municipality of Amersfoort, as a manager (operations and buildings) at several government services and departments, and headed the Partnership of Moroccans in the Netherlands (SMN) from 2008 to 2016.[3][4] Since 2015, he has been owning the real estate consultancy "Cleverstone".
