Notes and Observations

[change | change source]
This page lists my personal opinions and observations, not official Wikipedia policies. Anyone can use these as a quick reference; both Wikipedia policies and my observations are summarized here, and I will continue updating this page.

Important Rules

[change | change source]
1. WikiProjects on Simple English Wikipedia
WikiProjects on Simple Wikipedia are not official. They are created on user pages, and everything related to them, such as templates, barnstars, and awards, should remain on user pages.
2. Quick Deletion (QD) G5 Criteria
QD G5 only applies to articles created by users when they were evading blocks. It cannot be used on content created by users who were blocked after the creation of the page.
3. Original Creations
The absence of an article on English Wikipedia does not mean it should not exist on other Wikipedias. In fact, original creations are encouraged. Articles can be created as long as they meet the criteria for WP:GNG (General Notability Guidelines) and WP:Notability.
4. Auntof6's Notes
This subpage (User:Auntof6/Things I would like Wikipedia editors to know) of Auntof6 lists some things that are different on Simple Wikipedia compared to English Wikipedia.
5. Categories
On Simple English Wikipedia, we avoid overloading pages with numerous categories. Categories are organized into a hierarchical structure known as the Category Tree. Each category is a subcategory or "child" of a more general "parent" category (See: Category tree). Pages should be placed in the lowest level of the category tree that applies to them.
6. Talk Pages
Empty talk pages are not created on Simple English Wikipedia. Talk pages are only created when a discussion needs to be initiated. Additionally, we do not add quality or WikiProject tags to talk pages like English Wikipedia.
7. Deleting Empty Categories (C1)
Categories here are only created only when they have at least three entries to go in them. The exception to this rule is categories for year of birth and year of death. If an empty category is created, we wait at least four days before nominating it for Quick Deletion C1.
8. Sandbox
On Simple English Wikipedia, sandboxes are created in user subpages. The main sandbox for editing tests is WP:Sandbox. Users may create multiple personal sandboxes within their own user pages.

Recommendations for Fellow Wikipedians

[change | change source]
1. Maintaining Encyclopedic Quality
Simplifying an article should not strip it of its encyclopedic nature. I’ve noticed that some articles become non-encyclopedic or lose their coherence after being simplified. Remember, Simple Wikipedia is still an encyclopedia, and our articles should reflect that.
2. Avoiding Superficial Simplifications
Copying an article from English Wikipedia and changing just a few words does not make it truly simple. Simple Wikipedia should offer value by providing content that is genuinely simplified, not just a slightly altered copy of the English version. If we merely duplicate content, readers might as well refer to the original, up-to-date English Wikipedia. I recommend using Wikipedia:VOA Special English Word Book for simplifying articles.
3. SEO Considerations
Copying content word-for-word from English Wikipedia also negatively impacts search engine optimization (SEO). This can result in Simple Wikipedia being penalized by search engines like Google, eventually leading to a loss of readership. It’s important to create original content that is both simple and unique (also encyclopedic) to maintain our visibility and usefulness.
4. Admit Mistakes and Maintain Civility
Don’t be afraid to admit your mistakes if you know you are wrong. If you get involved in a dispute, please maintain civility and be nice to others.

Ending Note: The language on this page may not be as simplified, as it is written for me and other English-speaking Wikipedians who simplify articles from English Wikipedia. Happy editing! :)
