An ambulance belonging to the Palestinian Red Crescent Society was hit in an Israeli air strike in Khan Yunis.

A large number of attacks on healthcare facilities occurred during the 2023 Israeli-Palestinian War . During the first week of the war, there were 94 attacks on healthcare facilities in Gaza, killing 29 healthcare workers and wounding 24 others. [1] Attacks on health care facilities contributed to a severe humanitarian crisis in Gaza . [2] [3] [4] CNN quoted the International Committee of the Red Cross as saying, "Hospitals enjoy special protection under international humanitarian law in times of war." [5]

Israel violated medical neutrality, which is considered a war crime under the Geneva Conventions.[6][7][8] According to Gaza officials, the Israeli army deliberately targeted ambulances and health facilities with air strikes.[9] In a statement, the Palestinian Red Crescent called for “accountability for this war crime”.[10] The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, UNRWA, and Doctors Without Borders reported the death of members of their medical teams.[11][12]

National Arab Hospital

On October 17, 2023, the Israeli army bombed the parking lot of the Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza City, resulting in a large number of deaths and injuries among displaced Palestinians.


Siege of Al-Shifa Hospital Complex

Al-Shifa Hospital was under siege and bombing during the war. The hospital was completely isolated from the rest of Gaza City, trapping 15,000 people who were either sick in need of treatment or had taken refuge in the hospital. [13] [14] [15] Israel claims that Hamas uses it as a military base, which Hamas denies. [16]


Indonesian Hospital


An Indonesian hospital in Gaza, funded by Indonesian citizens and organizations, was struggling to treat patients who were injured in the Israeli bombing. Between dwindling medicine stocks and power outages that forced doctors to work in the dark. [17] On November 20, 2023, as part of the 2023 Israeli invasion of the Gaza Strip, the IDF completely surrounded the hospital. [18] [19] 12 people were killed after the Israeli army bombed the hospital. [20]


Al-Quds Hospital


Al-Quds Hospital in Gaza City was bombed several times and the Israeli army ordered its immediate evacuation. The World Health Organization expressed deep concern about the situation. [21]


Turkish-Palestinian Friendship Hospital


The Turkish-Palestinian Friendship Hospital was also targeted during the war. [22]


Jordanian field hospital


The Jordanian field hospital in Gaza, which has been operating since 2009, was severely damaged during the conflict. The hospital faces a threat due to a lack of supplies during the Israeli bombing. In response, the Jordanian Air Force sent emergency medical aid to the hospital. Despite these efforts, the hospital was forced to halt operations due to ongoing attacks. [23] [24]


Al-Shifa Ambulance air strike


An Israeli air strike hit an ambulance convoy leaving Al-Shifa Hospital carrying seriously injured patients. [25] The raid killed 15 people and injured dozens. [25] [26] [27]


Al Awda Hospital


The World Health Organization strongly condemned Israel's repeated orders to evacuate Al Awda Hospital in the northern Gaza Strip, describing them as a death sentence for the sick and wounded. More than 2,000 patients had to move to southern Gaza. [28]


Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani Hospital


Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani Hospital for Rehabilitation and Prosthetics in Gaza reported severe damage due to Israel's continued attack on the Strip. [29] [30] [31]

United Nations aid workers and other medical personnel[change | change source]

At least 88 people working for UNRWA, the United Nations relief agency for Palestinian refugees, have been killed since October 7 [32] and medical staff have also suffered heavy losses in the conflict, with the war killing many doctors due to Israeli airstrikes. [33]

So far, 198 medical workers have been killed, and 87 ambulances have been damaged. In Gaza, 21 out of 35 hospitals and 51 out of 72 primary medical care facilities were closed. [34]

Attacks on health care facilities have had dire consequences for the population. [35] Hospitals in Gaza are facing a severe shortage of medical supplies amid the comprehensive Israeli blockade . Israel cut off water, electricity and fuel supplies, leaving 2.3 million people stranded. [36] The World Health Organization stressed the urgent need to end the violence and establish a humanitarian corridor in the Gaza Strip . [37] [38]

Health officials and medical organizations in the Gaza Strip accused Israel of deliberately bombing ambulances and health facilities in the Strip. She said that these attacks are considered a violation of international laws, which include such attacks in the list of war crimes. [39] The Arab-Islamic Summit urged the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court to "conduct a comprehensive investigation into the war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by Israel against the Palestinians." [39] Human Rights Watch said the attack on an ambulance near Al-Shifa Hospital should be investigated as a possible war crime. [40] Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Turkey had “written off” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and would refer Israel’s human rights violations and war crimes to the International Criminal Court .
