The Reclaim Party is a right-wing populist[1] political party in the United Kingdom. It was created in 2020 by British actor and political activist Laurence Fox, with funding from Jeremy Hosking.

History[change | change source]

Founding[change | change source]

The party was registered on 13 March 2019 by Jeremy Hosking as Brexit Express.[2][3]

In September 2020, Lawrence Fox got funding for a new political party, provisionally called Reclaim,[4][5] and refered to as "UKIP for culture".[6][4]

In October 2020, Brexit Express changed its leader from Jeremy Hosking to Laurence Fox and was renamed The Reclaim Party.[7] However the party name had yet to be successfully registered with the Electoral Commission as there was a dispute over the name due it's similarity to the The "Reclaim Project". The Reclaim Project is a charity from Manchester.[8] In February 2021, the party registered it's new name with the Electoral Commission, changing from Brexit Express to The Reclaim Party.[9][10]

In December 2021, newspapers reported that Hosking would continue to fund The Reclaim Party.[11]

Parliamentary representation[change | change source]

Andrew Bridgen is a Member of Parliament. He was expelled from the Conservative Party in January 2023 for tweetingː "As one consultant cardiologist said to me, [the COVID-19 vaccines are] the biggest crime against humanity since the Holocaust".[12] This was against the lobbying rules.[13] After he was expelled he was an independent. In May 2023, he joined Reclaim, becoming the party's first MP.[14]

Agreement with Reform UK[change | change source]

On 12 June 2023, Reform UK and the Reclaim Party announced an agreement for the for two by-elections. Reform UK participated in Mid Bedfordshire, and Reclaim in Uxbridge and South Ruislip.[15] Both parties lost the by-elections and lost their deposits.

Electoral record[change | change source]

2021 London mayoral election[change | change source]

In March 2021, Fox announced he would stand in the London mayoral elections, in order to "fight against extreme political correctness" and to "end the Met's obsession with diversity and inclusivity".[16][17] His candidacy was endorsed by Reform UK, who did not participate in the election. His candidacy was also endorsed by Nigel Farage.[18] Most of Fox's campaign funds was from Jeremy Hosking.[19] In the first quarter of 2021, Hosking gave The Reclaim Party more than £1,000,000 in cash and services.[20]

In the mayoral election, Fox finished in sixth place with 47,634 votes (1.9 per cent), losing his £10,000 election deposit.[21][22]

2021 Scottish Parliament election[change | change source]

The party stood one candidate, Leo Kearse, in Glasgow Pollok for the 2021 Scottish Parliament election. Pollok received 114 votes (0.3 per cent).[23]

2021 North Shropshire by-election[change | change source]

Martin Daubney was the party's candidate in the 2021 North Shropshire by-election.[24] Daubney is a former journalist and editor. He was the Deputy Leader of The Reclaim Party between 2021 to August 2022. [25] Daubney is also a former Brexit Party Member of the European Parliament (MEP) from 2019 to 2020. He finished seventh with 375 votes (0.98 per cent), losing his deposit.[26]

During the by-election campaign, a Market Drayton town councillor defected to Reclaim, becoming the party's first representative in UK local government. [27][28][29] However he resigned as a councillor less than a year later.[30]

2023 Uxbridge and South Ruislip by-election[change | change source]

In June 2023, Reclaim Party leader Laurence Fox announced he would contest in the 2023 Uxbridge and South Ruislip by-election.[31] Fox received 2.3% of the vote, finishing fourth and losing his deposit. The Conservative candidate Steve Tuckwell won the election. [32]
