Georg Michaelis (8 September 1857 – 24 July 24 1936) became the first Chancellor of Germany with a non-noble background.

He was invited by the Japanese government to teach at the German school of law in Tokyo from 1885 to 1889.
When he returned to Germany, he joined the civil service. The Emperor appointed him Reich Chancellor (Reichskanzler) from July to November 1917.
