On 25 January 2024, Nahedh Barbakh (13 years old, Arabic: ناهض بربخ)[1] and Ramez Barbakh (20 years old, Arabic: رامز بربخ) were shot while they and their family were forced to flee their home in the Al-Amal Neighbourhood (Arabic: حي الأمل), west of Khan Yunis.[2][3] The brothers Nahed and Ramez had been displaced to Rafah from the Al Amal neighborhood, and during their move, they found themselves in the aid distribution area. While they were heading to bring aid, Nahed was shot by an Israeli sniper, and when his brother Ramez tried to save him, he was also shot, falling on top of him while holding the white flag.[4][5][6][7] The two brothers were waving a white flag.[2]

Public Reaction[change | change source]

Their brother Ahmed Barbakh took a photo of their bodies.[2] This photo was spread across social media and international news sites.[8][9][10] People who commented noticed the presence of a white flag next to their bodies, through which they symbolized their status as civilians.[11] Some considered that this photo of their execution reflects the dangers of displacement and shows the fear that the residents of the Gaza Strip have been experiencing since the beginning of the 2023-2024 Palestinian-Israeli war.[12]

Investigations[change | change source]

Sanad was able to confirm Israeli military activity in the area via satellite imagery taken four days prior to the attack (19 January), and two days after the attack (26 January).[13]
