Rock Music

Hey, I noticed you tagged rock music as a stub. Please can you not do so when has {{inuse}} at the top. I lost some of my work in a conflict (because I had to shut down quickly) and I'll have to re-do it later. Happy new year, DJDunsie (talk) 18:06, 1 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, sorry about that. You know you can just press the "back" button on your browser to get your work back, copy it, press the "forward" button and paste it? That's what I do. Happy new year, Orashmatash (talk) 18:16, 1 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You don't even need to do that; when you edit conflict, what you have written will appear in the bottom edit window; just copy and paste it into the top edit window. Though perhaps this could also be a lesson to everyone to save as they go along to avoid edit conflicts, write offline and then copy and paste in immediately or, perhaps, just simply not write things when you have to leave quickly - any number of things could happen if making an edit quickly. Goblin 18:18, 1 January 2012 (UTC) I ♥ Orashmatash![reply]
Thanks for the advice, both of you. My browser doesn't have the "back" capability, but I think I'll work offline first, from now on. I guess I shouldn't have written it when I had to leave quickly, too. I'll know for next time. Thanks again, DJDunsie (talk) 18:23, 1 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Useful source-finding websites

Was snooping through your userpage and noticed that under this heading you list "The Sun" - LOL?! That rag? You really need to double check everything you read in that so-called newspaper. :P Normandy 15:02, 4 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Are you good with regular expressions?

In AWB, I'm trying to match something with a regular expression. An example of the kind of string I'm trying to match is:

In 2007 its [[population]] was 4802.

The actual population number could be different. I tried this regular expression without luck:

In 2007 its \[\[population\]\] was ([0-9]{1,7})\.

I have the parens around the part for the population number because I want to refer to that piece for a find-and-replace. Do you know enough about this to see why it's not working? Thanks muchly! --Auntof6 (talk) 08:37, 5 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, I have no idea about regular expressions. Sorry! :( Orashmatash (talk) 15:14, 5 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
OK, thanks anyway. :) --Auntof6 (talk) 16:52, 5 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

I've no idea where to put this, (nor am I familiar with how this whole wikipedia stuff works), so here goes: Thanks for the note about that, I wasn't aware of that. I think I need a bit of a crash-course on how to start certain articles, doing talk pages, my own userpage, etc. I've got the editing stuff sort of down pat, but some help on that would be great!WildRoseBeef (talk) 21:52, 6 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'd be happy to give you some help. Is there anything in particular that you are having trouble with? Orashmatash (talk) 22:36, 6 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Next time my edits flood RC

I just had a thought. I'm flagging the mass changes I'm making as minor, so you could remove them from your RC display by hiding small changes. Hope that helps! --Auntof6 (talk) 01:48, 7 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

...furthermore, everyone could stop getting so hung up on a perceived flooding of recent changes. It's not a big deal, the activity levels seen cannot really be seen as a "flood" and if all else fails just expand your RC preview. We don't have enough activity to ever make flooding an issue. Still amazed we got the flood flag, even if I did vote for it. Goblin 04:14, 7 January 2012 (UTC) I ♥ Dendodge![reply]
Auntof6's suggestion is a very good idea (I didn't even notice that you could filter minor changes!), so I will do that from now on. Orashmatash (talk) 21:20, 11 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Big Airport Weekend - January 20-23

We want to invite you to participate in the Big Airport Weekend on Jan 20-23. (See: WP:Big Weekend) The purpose of this weekend is to improve SEWP's coverage of airports and airport related articles. A few tasks and guidelines:

  1. Add {{Infobox airport}} to all airport articles
  2. To improve existing articles and stubs in the Category:Airports including subcategories.
  3. To add new articles on airports. (Any airport with regular commercial service or where a historic event happened is notable enough for an article.)
  4. Airports can be civilian, military, and anywhere in the world.
  5. Add BAW (for Big Airport Weekend) to the edit summaries to help keep track of the changes.
  6. Please use the {{inuse}} template to avoid edit conflicts with other BAW participants.

Barnstars will be liberally rewarded for your airport efforts. Let me know if you have any questions. Please join us to have fun and to improve SEWP. Thanks, Racepacket (talk) 19:12, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'll definitely get involved. I'll just need to find something to help remind me to add "BAW:" to the change summary. :p --Orashmatash (talk) 19:17, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Any thoughts on this new article? From a web search it appears to be a YouTube artist with no credible references from what I can see. Osiris (talk) 16:48, 15 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Another, Swag Team Entertainment, created by the same author, has references, but they don't appear to verify the text. The achievements under "Certifications" are credited to Lil Wayne. From a web search, it appears to be a side-project or something of Yung Joc, for whom we don't have an article. Osiris (talk) 16:52, 15 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Re-framing

Of course I agree with your revert here at Stop Online Piracy Act. There is no question that your edit summary was accurate, on-point.

May I make a suggestion while asking a question at the same time? What if your edit summary had re-framed the issue slightly? You correctly described the IP change, but what would have been the effect if you had focused instead on the cited source? The changed sentence was based on what a Russian journalist wrote. As you can read for yourself, Katarina Azorova explained,

"Internet giants such as Google, YouTube, Yahoo, AOL and many others have likened the bills to China-style censorship .... And amid fears they will lead to unprecedented censorship, many web moguls are trying to take matters into their own digital hands." (emphasis added)

In other words, instead of an edit summary which identified what was wrong, what about focusing on what was better in the original wording? What would be the possible consequences if the edit summary had pointed out that the simple sentence was supported and confirmed by the cite?

Your revert was justified because the IP words were only an opinion. At the same time, your revert was valid because of the published source which was cited. There was more than one way to parse the relevant issues. Do you see what I mean? --Horeki (talk) 18:14, 18 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, yes, I do. That's a good idea. Thanks. :) Orashmatash (talk) 18:15, 18 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Flood flag

Thanks for the note. I didn't even know such a thing existed, so I learned something new today! Anyway, I am done with editing for now. --R'n'B (talk) 19:49, 18 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Removed. Thanks for your work! Orashmatash (talk) 19:50, 18 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Protect/PROTECT

Please consider how the title acronym was treated by CNET:

"Sen. Ron Wyden, an Oregon Democrat, has placed a hold on the bill, saying Protect IP takes an 'overreaching approach to policing the Internet when a more balanced and targeted approach would be more effective.' That hold could be defeated through a cloture vote, a significant hurdle but not an insurmountable one." (bold added)

Does this example help explain my point of view -- see here?

Please understand that I did not check the change history of the article until now. When I changed "PROTECT" to "Protect" I believed that I was correcting my own mistake. Only now do I realize that it appeared as if I were reverting your change.

Please accept my apology for causing a problem. I will defer to your decision-making about what is best. --Horeki (talk) 20:33, 18 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

(change conflict) Ohhh, so you didn't know I moved the page? It's absolutely fine since the acronym is now in the article. The name is fine as-is, I just moved it to make it clearer that it was an acronym. It should be okay now unless someone raises any valid concerns. Hi. Maybe it's time to block the IP-address 92.8.87.148. -- Tegel (talk) 16:43, 22 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I think they've taken the hint and stopped. If they create it again I'll block. Orashmatash (talk) 16:49, 22 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I hope so, but apparently not. The IP-address was blocked on en.wiki yesterday and has today been on is.wiki and it.wiki. The user account Lee Bennett was just created so I expect the trouble to continue. -- Tegel (talk) 16:57, 22 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
They recreated Lee with nonsense. Blocked for 24 hours. Orashmatash (talk) 17:17, 22 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe you could change the block for 92.8.87.148 so the user can't edit it's own talk page? -- Tegel (talk) 17:50, 22 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Done. Sorry for the delay, I was away. Orashmatash (talk) 17:58, 22 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Please dont revert my changes to my user talk page. I dont appreciate it but if you have a problem with it please talk to me about it instead of changing it yourself. Thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.131.73.2 (talkcontribs) 17:36, 27 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You should never change others' comments. It was also vandalism so my revert was valid and justified. -Orashmatash (talk) 17:42, 27 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I dont agree that it was vandalism as it was my page but I do understand what you mean about not changing others comments. 67.131.73.2 (talk) 17:43, 27 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Well put it this way: since when is replacing things in others' comments (which should not be done anyway) with "cheese" not considered vandalism? -Orashmatash (talk) 17:46, 27 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Ok I thought it was just joking around, but I can see how it would be seen as vandalism. I'm sorry. 67.131.73.2 (talk) 17:48, 27 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Nonsense on user talk pages is generally fine as long as it is the page owner who added it, but not when you replace things in others' comments with it. The important thing is that you learn from this. -Orashmatash (talk) 17:49, 27 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
