Estimates and facts

Hello. It came to my notice that you have reverted the removal of estimates from the infobox, in spite of lack of official population census sources about the ethnicity of the population. In the cases where a country does not collect data on ethnicity in its population censuses, this section in the infobox is left just empty. A such example is Turkey, where a note and a redirect to the Demographics section is in place instead. To explain further, the reason for nominating this article for deletion is that it seems to be a dicdef (a dictionary definition). Terms such as this belong in the Simple English Wiktionary (which already has this term). Wikipedia is for articles on notable subjects. Many articles, however, begin with a definition. But, an article goes well beyond being just a dictionary type definition. If you can research the subject into a larger article with several reliable source citations showing it to be notable, that may save the article. Keep in mind we are a separate project from Enwiki. Your new pages and patroller right

Hello, Lolcats20. Part of having the patroller right means that pages you create do not need patrolling. When you are given this right, we are trusting that articles you create are in good shape and appropriate for this Wikipedia. I just had to make some substantive changes to Papers, Please, an article you created.

  • I removed a lot of redlinked categories.
  • The article didn't have code for a references section.
  • It was not wikified.
  • It needed copy editing.
  • It needed simplifying, mostly for compound sentences.

  • Using self-closing tags like <div/> and <span/> to mean <div></div> and <span></span> will not work in the future. Templates and pages that use these tags should be fixed. When Phabricator ticket T134423 is fixed these tags will parse as <div> and <span> instead. This is normal in HTML5. [6]

Patrolling

Hello, Lolcats20. I happened to notice some issues with the article Kevin Downes, and I saw thst you patrolled it. The issues I saw were:

  • The article doesn't show notability.
  • It uses an incorrect heading, "External links" instead of "Other websites".
  • It has an authority control template with no parameters, which puts a narrow empty rectangle on the page.

These things, especially the last two, could have been fixed easily. When you patrol, you need to do more than just look at the article. If there is an issue that you aren't going to fix, you can either tag the article so that someone else can find and fix it, or just leave it unpatrolled. You don't have to patrol things just because you have the ability.

Looking at some of the other pages you've patrolled, I also noticed other issues.

  • Saheed Osupa needs simplifying and copy editing for grammar.
  • Otto Lilienthal needs simplifying, more categories, and a stub tag.
  • Francesco Filippini needs simplifying. It also needs some cleanup: at the bottom, there is a misplaced Commons template, as well as a template that we don't have.

When you patrol, please make sure that the page being patrolled either doesn't have issues like this, that you fix the issues, or that you tag it so that others can find and fix the issues. Thanks. --Auntof6 (talk) 17:30, 19 May 2016 (UTC)

@Sbs882y: The reason I put your articles up to be deleted is that the articles had no claim to being notable and that they had little information, of little meaning. If you are to make this articles again, you need to add more information on them, things like History, origin, uses etc. And use References to meaningful articles or websites relating to them. Hi Lolcats20. You gave out a level one warning on the user's talk page, which was appropriate in this case. Level 1 "assumes good faith." Generally the message begins with the words "Welcome to Wikipedia" (not the same as a welcome message) or something similar. Your discussion and or guidance to this user needs to also assume good faith and should match the warning level. People do make mistakes and level 1 gives the benefit of the doubt. Level 2 does not assume anything. It is just the normal progression of warning levels. Frequently this is as far as it goes and the user "gets the message" this isn't a place to play or make careless edits. Level 3 assumes vandalism. But you should not go directly to level 3. Just be helpful to others, you cannot know their intent unless you have more to go on. Admins here are on top of things. At some point one will step in and take the necessary measures. (talk page stalker) Hi, I think there might have been a misunderstanding here. This IP has persisted in their "9+10=21" agenda on both this wiki and EN. The editor was previously warned (along the levels) and (thereafter) blocked, but continued with their edits to {{Addition table}} without discussion with others. This editor has since blanked their talk page, though previous warnings are available in the revision history. Considering the user's unblock requests on EN, I think their intentions (on not contributing constructively) are quite clear. While administrators do possess the technical tools for enforcing policy, other editors are also an important part of the community, and their opinions and judgment should be valued as well. Recent changes

  • A new image scaler fixed a number of bugs for showing SVG files. Some new problems turned up. [49][50][51]
  • Notifications are grouped by types. They are now counted by number of notifications and not by unread groups. That change may increase the number of notifications displayed. The earlier way of counting was often incorrect. Unread notifications will also be displayed first. [52][53][54]
  • Special:Notifications now has a maximum width for the notifications list on desktop computers. This allows long titles and descriptions to be cut properly. Notifications are now also better parsed. [55][56][57]

Problems

  • On 5 July Wikimedia Commons had problems and could not be edited for 20 minutes. For a short while after that the recent changes log and some gadgets were not working properly. It affected administrative actions on other projects too. [58]
  • Users who have multiple unread notifications can mark them as read by visiting Special:Notifications page on their wiki.

Problems

  • Last week Tech News announced you will get a notification when you mention yourself the same way as if someone else had mentioned you. This caused some problems and will happen later instead. [86]
  • Creating and editing links to sections on other pages on the wiki now works again in the visual editor. [87]
  • For some users, cross-wiki notifications haven't been working properly. The count has been wrong when only cross-wiki notifications were present. The cross-wiki bundle has been showing only the names of wikis and not the actual notifications. This will be fixed soon. [88][89]

Changes this week

  • The login session when you choose "Keep me logged in" will now last a year. Previously it was 30 days. This will happen on August 16. [90]
  • Some abuse filters will have to be updated during the week. This is because a bug will be fixed. [91]
  • In compact language links, two new kinds of languages will be shown in the shorter language list: Languages that are used in the article's text, and languages where the article has a badge like "featured article" or "good article". [92][93]
  • The visual editor will be available by default for logged-out editors on Wikipedias that use the Arabic script. It is already default for logged-in editors. [94]

Recent changes

  • The ORES review tool is now available on Special:Contributions as a beta feature. It can make it easier to find contributions that are probably damaging the wikis. The ORES review tool is available on Wikidata and Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Dutch, Turkish and Russian Wikipedia. [96]
  • The norm and ccnorm functions have been updated to make it easier to write abuse filters. This also affects the TitleBlacklist extension. You don't have to transform "I" and "L" to "1", "O" to "0" and "S" to "5" anymore. [97]
  • The old pageview data in the "pagecounts-raw" and "pagecounts-all-sites" files is no longer being updated. You can find the new pageview data here. This happened on August 5. [98]

Problems

  • Some big image files could not be thumbnailed. This has now been fixed. [99]
  • When you moved a page over a redirect it would delete the redirect without saving it in the logs. This has now been fixed. [100]

  • Interactive maps now have a frame by default. This is to make them look like other multimedia objects. This affects all Wikivoyages, the Catalan, Hebrew, Macedonian Wikipedias and Meta. [109]
  • When you preview the MediaWiki:Captcha-ip-whitelist page it will show a validation output of the listed IP addresses instead of the list of addresses only. This can help you to identify if your whitelist rules will work or not. [110]
