From Simple English Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I was too busy to follow up with this but now that I have the time, I'm bringing this up again since the block is expiring in about a week. Currently, most of the articles they edited have been reverted back to the state before they started editing it. Since the user has made no attempts to appeal their block since December 7th, I propose that their block be extended to indefinite which can only be lifted after they can explain their blocking reasons properly and explain what writing in Simple English is. In addition, their contributions on the English Wikipedia (e.g. en:Timeline of schizophrenia) shows little improvement to me.

As I've said before, the user is incapable of writing simple English, and that disqualifies him from being a useful editor. I agree his block should be extended to indefinite. Macdonald-ross (talk) 10:17, 31 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I would also support this. QuicoleJR (talk) 13:38, 31 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed fr33kman 16:07, 31 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I see that Simpul skitsofreeneea was blocked because they kept making contributions whose poor English made the articles worse instead of better. Poor English can be a solvable problem. For this reason, I am against giving Simpul a block with no expiration date. Given the stigma against users with blocks, I am also against increasing this user's punishment given that there was no further wrongdoing on their part. That being said, competence is required.
I propose we offer Simpul skitsofreeneea an informal middle ground: No official block but rather an agreement to pseudovoluntarily not edit in the SEWP article space unless they improve their writing skill a whole darn lot, with the understanding that this would take years. Topic bans have no lockout in the system, but they are still enforceable. We could call it a gesture of respect for the fact that they took the agreed-upon punishment without incident. Darkfrog24 (talk) 19:08, 31 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Simpul skitsofreeneea: the advantages to you would be 1) fewer people on en.wiki and other wikis would assume you're a bad editor (sanctions can multiply), 2) you'd be less eligible for a global block, 3) you could still participate in the SEWP community on talk pages, helping to find sources, and other issues if you felt like it. These aren't fun, but they're nothing to sneeze at. Darkfrog24 (talk) 19:15, 31 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The use of blocks is about protecting the project, it is never okay to punish a user with block. The user cannot write in simple English. fr33kman 21:44, 31 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Bans and blocks are punishments, even if they're also something else. I know of no way to remove their punitive side. Darkfrog24 (talk) 00:06, 1 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hey guys? There's a note on Simpul's en.wiki talk page that says "this user is on vacation." Darkfrog24 (talk) 20:44, 31 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Darkfrog24 I did not notice that, thanks for letting us know. I had notified Simpul skitsofreeneea on their talk page prior to this, as it is standard for these discussions.
Multiple reasons led me to suggest an indefinite block: the last discussion wasn't the first time their edits were scrutinized (Wikipedia:Simple_talk/Archive_153#Schizophrenia), they kept pushing the fact that the Flesch-Kincaid scores of their contribution were better (even though the prose became unreadable), and the sheer number of edits to go through (3000 in 2 months). I am not in favor of a community or topic ban anymore at this point, but something should be done to prevent community time from being wasted on fixing an editor's edit.
No official block but rather an agreement to pseudovoluntarily not edit in the SEWP article space unless they improve their writing skill a whole darn lot, with the understanding that this would take years. While it might work in theory, nothing stops them from making an edit here, and at that point, that sounds more like a ban. — *Fehufangą✉ Talk page 01:31, 1 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
IMO we should just do an indef block. Not as a punishment, but to prevent further problems in the future. As mentioned, unblocking can always be an option once they can understand why they are blocked. Another proposal is to block them from mainspace, so they can have access to their usersandboxes, and from there, demonstrate their Simple English Writings. --Tsugaru let's talk! :) 02:25, 1 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Not only is he incapable of writing simple English, he shows no sign of improving. Macdonald-ross (talk) 18:14, 1 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If Simpul is a kid, that problem will solve itself in three to seven years. An expiration date would save everyone involved a whole lot of trouble. Darkfrog24 (talk) 20:19, 1 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Given the level of writing, they likely have a formal university education, perhaps with a focus on research (in a field such as medicine, pharmacy/pharmacology, biology, chemistry or similar). Perhaps they are a student in the second part of their studies or a medical doctor/staff at a hospital. All of this is unimportant though, anyone can contribute to Wikipedia. What their main problem is/was is adding complex material to articles, and the inability or unwillingness to simplify it for SEWP. Eptalon (talk) 05:23, 2 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Regardless of their age or educational background, and regardless of whether or not there is an expiration date, my only concern is enforcing a no-block agreement. Violating it would just lead to a block anyway. Demonstrating that they have improved their Simple English writing skill can also be done in an unblock request. I am open to the idea of a timed block, maybe one or two years. They may be unblocked sooner if, in an unblock request, they can demonstrate that they have learned to write better Simple English. — *Fehufangą✉ Talk page 14:10, 2 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I support the timed block situation you describe as my second choice.
Let's say it's three, five, ten years from now. A lot of the people having this conversation will have moved on. The project's standards may have changed in any direction. Even if a SEWP admin were to go back and read the old posts, there's no guarantee that person would understand them. Simpul wouldn't have to address the real problem; they'd have to guess whatever this new person they've never met thinks is the problem and then address or pretend to address that. Simpul could in fact improve their English just fine and still stay blocked. An expiration date solves that: Simpul could quietly return to editing and the community on duty at the time could rediscuss or resanction if there's still any problem. Also, if the block is anything but indefinite, then SEWP can't serve as one of the two required indefs to make Simpul eligible for a global (though it could serve as supporting information, which would be more appropriate). Darkfrog24 (talk) 14:51, 4 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think it might be best to let the block expire and see how they contribute. If there are further problems, I or someone else can just block them indefinitely. Vermont (🐿️🏳️‍🌈) 16:49, 4 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Vermont Thanks. It's expiring soon and it appears they are back to activity on enwiki. It's best to just wait now. — *Fehufangą✉ Talk page 10:19, 6 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion review

Certainly, I have read and digested The Deletion review. I also see pages that met notability from their sources which automatically proves passing WP: GNG. Yet, some of them are being deleted for the following reasons which are not on WP: Deletion review;

  • Not in English Wikipedia
  • Not translated to any other Wikipedia (eg. Urdu Wikipedia, Fr wiki, Spanish wiki and other language Wikipedia)
  • Sources provided are clearly notable but because it was deleted on English Wikipedia, it should also be deleted here
  • In reading one of the deletion requests, an editor said, "...Because there is nothing like this page on English Wikioedia. It should be deleted or renamed.
  • I have also seen notable pages. Yet, deleted because they were not on other wikipedia.

Note: I believe Simple English Wikipedia is simplified from English Wikipedia but should a page be dependent on English Wikipedia. I guess MathXplore tried telling me the linking but I still stand supporting clearer explanation and future adjustments.Mastashat (talk) 13:13, 5 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I don't really get what you mean? What is the problem? fr33kman 13:19, 5 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Pages are nominated for deletion and some of the reasons which are not in the guide are sometimes used and mainly is the WP: Notability. For example, a notable page with listed sources from independent and reliable sources was nominated per notability owing to the whether it's translated on other wiki or whether it's on English Wikipedia. Yet, I see them been deleted.
The question then is, does pages on Simple English Wikipedia dependent on its existence on English Wikipedia. Best, Mastashat (talk) 13:24, 5 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
While I know Simple English Wikipedia is a simplified version of English Wikipedia, should we abandoned the WP: GNG and rules in WP: Deletion review. Best, Mastashat (talk) 13:25, 5 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
We do our own thing here. I don't care it enwiki finds an article deletable or not, if we find it notable then it stays. Same vice-versa. fr33kman 13:29, 5 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If you search a little you will find articles enwp doesn't have Eptalon (talk) 13:38, 5 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There are many articles here on Simple Wikipedia that English Wikipedia doesn't have. So, yeah, that is not a reason for the deletion of a page here. The main criteria are WP:Notability. If a subject meets notability, it doesn't matter if it exists on other wikis or not. But, in my opinion, the existence of a page on English Wikipedia or other wikis like fr, de, es may contribute to notability, as these wikis are big and more patrolled. – Cyber.Eyes2005Talk 13:56, 5 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. "This article is not on en.wiki" should count neither for deletion nor for retention. I kept a whole list of articles that Simple has before or instead of en.wiki. Darkfrog24 (talk) 18:09, 5 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Haoreima has made a lot of articles here before later making them on enwiki. Immanuelle ❤️💚💙 (please tag me) 20:12, 5 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I've seen people make those arguments. I think people sometimes assume that any notable topic would already have an article in one of the other Wikipedias.
However, none of the four things you list should be reasons for deleting. Note, though, that it is not sources themselves that need to be notable. It is the article's subject that needs to be notable. A reference from a reliable source is not enough if it doesn't support a statement that shows notability. For example, a reference that just confirms a person's birth date does not show notability because being born on a certain day does not make a person notable. -- Auntof6 (talk) 01:40, 6 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, but an article not being on En wiki is certainly a matter for caution. Macdonald-ross (talk) 13:30, 6 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I disagree with you. So, why should it be a caution. So what if a page was deleted on English Wikipedia not because of notability but because it was created by a blocked user, novice on Wikipedia and must have used different sock-puppet accounts in creating one or two topics causing the deletion of the page. Mastashat (talk) 13:40, 6 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
All the same. it is a matter for caution. Macdonald-ross (talk) 13:43, 6 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Please @Macdonald-ross, I guess you add materials and links to help teach others. All the same is a matter of caution still confused me and maybe any other editor who may have the same problem. Best, Mastashat (talk) 13:47, 6 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Certainly, articles deleted on EnWiki due to being created by a blocked user can be recreated here, but articles deleted under other criteria, such as Advertising and Notability, are indeed a matter of caution. – Cyber.Eyes2005Talk 13:56, 6 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Cyber.Eyes.2005 What if the subjects attains notability later that he/she can be included on English Wikipedia but due to certain circumstances following dependent on a deleted page on English Wikipedia that is not Simple English Wikipedia. Are you saying we should not include such pages here because of its former deletion. Can't Simple English Wikipedia be different from En wiki but not copying some changes like deletion. When articles meets notability, then it should be treated here as notable when quality, independent sources are provided significantly on the subject and not a mere mention, blog posts or press releases. Mastashat (talk) 15:46, 6 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I even forgot WP: FOLLOW UP. After clearly reading this, I believe all rule should be established so that this wiki should have its own rules.
Note: This is only a suggestion!. Mastashat (talk) 13:45, 6 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I also disagree. It may be a data point, but not necessarily an item for caution. Articles should be evaluated on their own merit, not based on whether someone else has gotten around to writing about them elsewhere. And even if it's a cause for concern with some editors, it is certainly not enough reason to delete. -- Auntof6 (talk) 15:25, 6 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Auntof6 Perfectly said. It is a matter of a wake up call because Google indexes pages created from Simple English Wikipedia immediately. Bearing this in mind, we need to improve in sources even.
I am even tempted to as/rfd some pages because while they exist on Enwiki with much sources, they appear here with even no source and when nominated will be backed with its existence on English Wikipedia. We really need to work on sources and content. Best, Mastashat (talk) 15:50, 6 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. I've always said that we are our own project with our own set of rules. Just because it does/doesn't exist on another wiki doesn't mean we should do the same thing. fr33kman 16:43, 6 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If there here on SEWP but have no sources, then we can delete them because they have no sources, irrespective of en.wiki.
I'm making my froggie articles, and sometimes the one here on SEWP is shorter than its en.wiki counterpart because whoever made that one has access to paywalled sources or a specific paper book and I don't. Darkfrog24 (talk) 01:38, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Categories on dinosaur pages

Is it okay to add those categories to the megalosaurid pages? I am planning to expand it but I just want to know since I do not want to disrupt anything. TheCarch (talk) 04:42, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@TheCarch: I'm not sure what you mean. Can you give an example of what you're thinking of doing? -- Auntof6 (talk) 05:38, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Try to do something simple. Don't mess with categories until you are familiar with the wiki. Macdonald-ross (talk) 10:11, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
ok, will keep that in mind but if I see a redlinked category can I remove the redlink category or image? TheCarch (talk) 00:31, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@TheCarch: As to removing redlinked categories, it depends. If you feel you have a good understanding of how the category system works on Simple, then you could use your judgment; removing it might be OK, but you could also see if there are enough entries you could add to it and then create it instead. By the way, in case you didn't know, most categories here should have at least three entries.
What were you referring to when you said "or image"? -- Auntof6 (talk) 01:11, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
So there was one page with a redlinked image but I did not remove it and was debating weather to or not TheCarch (talk) 00:16, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@TheCarch: I see. That usually means that someone has copied something from English Wikipedia ("enwiki") that uses an image that is not on Commons. Enwiki hosts images under some circumstances but Simple does not. The solution for this is to either find an image on Commons that can be used or to delete the code for the image. -- Auntof6 (talk) 01:16, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
ok TheCarch (talk) 03:44, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Two new policies

Hi, I'm suggesting that we need to create two new policies. The first on meta would be the election policy of checkusers. I've written the minimum policy at meta:CheckUser policy/Local policies#simple – Simple English Wikipedia at a minimum of 25 support votes and 70% support. An election period of a maxim,um of one month and I'd also recommend a minimum period of experience of 6 months - 1 year as an editor with at least 1000 edits. The second policy I'd recommend is for IPBE IP block exempt which needs to be a local policy. fr33kman 20:17, 10 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Plus our specifics: Checkusers must be administrators; put a link to our Criteria for adminship page as well; unlike other wikis, we don't have 'neutral votes' Eptalon (talk) 20:25, 10 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think we need any specific election policy for checkusers here. A month is ok right now but we just about manage to get the 25 support votes needed within a few weeks at the moment. What do we do if/when the community gets less active? It is just not a risk that we need to take. With experience, any potential checkusers have already became admins, and they are not going to become admins with any less than 1000 edits or 6 months experience anyway. We do definitely need an IPBE local page though to instruct editors what to do when they need it. Perhaps setting up a mailing list between checkusers would be a good idea for this as well. --Ferien2 (talk) 15:23, 17 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
This community mostly consists of active admins, very few non-admins edit here. The minimum 25 votes is given by meta policy; the 70% also. If I imagine now that there is an election during the holiday season, where many people are on holidays (where they don't necessarily have access to internet, because "roaming" may be expensive), the time when such elections are done is crucial. We need more checkusers and possibly oversighters (the documents they need to sign are very similar). What do other small wikis do to account for the fact that they barely have enough users to manage such requests? Eptalon (talk) 15:33, 17 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
For the IPBE policy, we could try simplifying the English Wikipedia policy and using that. It could be requested at RFP. QuicoleJR (talk) 16:34, 20 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Per WP:FOLLOW we do already use English Wikipedia policy. But yes if someone wants to take on simplifying that page then it could be brought over to be local. -Djsasso (talk) 05:34, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Would it be better to have it requested at RFP like most flags or at AN like the flood flag? Side note: should flood flag requests be moved to RFP? QuicoleJR (talk) 16:49, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I had done a bit of work simplifying it at User:Fehufanga/IPBE before this discussion, if anyone wants to take a look at it. — *Fehufangą✉ Talk page 06:45, 30 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Pinging participants to get this active again @Ferien @Eptalon @Fr33kman @QuicoleJR
First, as Ferien mentioned, unlike Oversighters, Simple English Wikipedia's checkusers do not have a shared checkuser email. A mailing list for checkusers or a VRT queue for simplewiki IPBEs should be created. Second, I personally believe that most IPBE requests should be private as IPBE requests deal with potentially sensitive information. — *Fehufangą✉ Talk page 14:17, 2 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Fehufanga: No issues with that at all, and completely agree with the fact that there should be a mailing list for checkusers. --Ferien (talk) 16:03, 2 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
A shared email would be okay but the reason OSers have a shared email addy is because of the confidential nature of all the requests. fr33kman 18:08, 2 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That all sounds good. QuicoleJR (talk) 19:23, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Shall we elect Vermont and Eptalon to manage and set-up the new CU mailing list? fr33kman 19:38, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You are receiving this notification as Guido den Broeder has made at least one edit to this wiki as per the m:Global bans policy. Best, --SHB2000 (talk) 06:07, 13 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Guido, SHB2000 is supposed to tell all the wikis you've worked on that you've been accused. This way, anyone who can speak to your good character is more likely to find out there's call to. Darkfrog24 (talk) 20:21, 13 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Wikiproject Pokemon

Hello.

I noticed there is an inactive Wikiproject for Pokémon, and as someone who revived (somewhat) and currently runs the Videogames Wikiproject I kind of want to revive that one as well.

Would there be interest in this? Derpdart56 (talk) 15:51, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Wikiproject never work on simplewiki. There are only about 30 active editors. fr33kman 15:54, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Eh, I've seen a little success with rebooting the VG wikiproject after seeing it dead for years. Though, I will note there doesn't seem to be active editors who focus on video games aside from me and a couple other people. Derpdart56 (talk) 16:00, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Fr33kman is right, but that doesn't mean you can't try. If the project is in another user's userspace and you want to have it in yours, you would need to check with the other user first. If it's in the "project" userspace, I would gladly move it to yours because "project" is not a standard space. -- Auntof6 (talk) 20:27, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The thing is, the user who runs it is pretty much retired off simple and hasn't edited on any wikimedia project since December 2009. Nobody's there to respond to a request if I did ask. And if I'm gonna move it under my userspace, I'm most likely making it a sub-project or taskforce because we don't really need an individual wikiproject for Pokemon specifically, considering the amount of articles we have for it isn't that many. Derpdart56 (talk) 15:25, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Derpdart56: Even if it looks like the user isn't around any more, it's good form to try to contact them. As for whether you revive it or not, that's up to you. -- Auntof6 (talk) 01:18, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Rathfelder As somebody who works on music articles, I consider the name of the composer as disambiguators, and a necessary one, even if only Joseph Haydn is the only composer to write a notable 94th symphony. Feminism and Folklore 2024

Please help translate to your language

Dear Wiki Community,

You are humbly invited to organize the Feminism and Folklore 2024 writing competition from February 1, 2024, to March 31, 2024 on your local Wikipedia. This year, Feminism and Folklore will focus on feminism, women's issues, and gender-focused topics for the project, with a Wiki Loves Folklore gender gap focus and a folk culture theme on Wikipedia.

You can help Wikipedia's coverage of folklore from your area by writing or improving articles about things like folk festivals, folk dances, folk music, women and queer folklore figures, folk game athletes, women in mythology, women warriors in folklore, witches and witch hunting, fairy tales, and more. Users can help create new articles, expand or translate from a generated list of suggested articles.

Organisers are requested to work on the following action items to sign up their communities for the project:

  1. Create a page for the contest on the local wiki.
  2. Set up a campaign on CampWiz tool.
  3. Create the local list and mention the timeline and local and international prizes.
  4. Request local admins for site notice.
  5. Link the local page and the CampWiz link on the meta project page.

This year, the Wiki Loves Folklore Tech Team has introduced two new tools to enhance support for the campaign. These tools include the Article List Generator by Topic and CampWiz. The Article List Generator by Topic enables users to identify articles on the English Wikipedia that are not present in their native language Wikipedia. Users can customize their selection criteria, and the tool will present a table showcasing the missing articles along with suggested titles. Additionally, users have the option to download the list in both CSV and wikitable formats. Notably, the CampWiz tool will be employed for the project for the first time, empowering users to effectively host the project with a jury. Both tools are now available for use in the campaign. Click here to access these tools

Learn more about the contest and prizes on our project page. Feel free to contact us on our meta talk page or by email us if you need any assistance.

We look forward to your immense coordination.

Thank you and Best wishes,

Feminism and Folklore 2024 International Team

Informing you about the Mental Health Resource Center and inviting any comments you may have

Hello all! I work in the Community Resilience and Sustainability team of the Wikimedia Foundation. The Mental Health Resource Center is a group of pages on Meta-wiki aimed at supporting the mental wellbeing of users in our community.

The Mental Health Resource Center launched in August 2023. The goal is to review the comments and suggestions to improve the Mental Health Resource Center each quarter. As there have not been many comments yet, I’d like to invite you to provide comments and resource suggestions as you are able to do so on the Mental Health Resource Center talk page. The hope is this resource expands over time to cover more languages and cultures. Thank you! Best, JKoerner (WMF) (talk) 21:36, 18 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Complexity check and assistance on Red Sea Crisis

I have done a lot of work to get an article and timeline (that still is not complete) together on the ongoing Red Sea Crisis. Can someone go through and do a complexity check on the article? The article was previously tagged with a complexity tag, but that was before a lot of the information was present and I have reworded some of the article. If it is still too complex, can I have some assistance in correcting the issues?

Thanks, WeatherWriter (talk) 06:20, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi WeatherWriter, I skimmed over it and did some minor edits, the wording seems simple but not sure about sentence structure. Cheers, Alextejthompson (Ping me or leave a message on my talk page) 15:51, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

F&F: Local event to be organised

The local event of F&F will be organised here. Local page is Wikipedia:Feminism and Folklore 2024. For further details, meta page meta:Wikipedia:Feminism and Folklore 2024 is available. Please leave your signatures in the local page, in case you are interested to be a jury member, or a participant, or even both. Please note that in case if you are serving as both jury as well as participant, you can't judge your own submitted article(s). Suggested articles related to the topics given, can also be enlisted in the local page. This year, other than just dashboards or fountain tools, new tools (explained elaborately here) have been developed specifically for the F&F. Haoreima (talk) 17:37, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How to create Template

I've few questions:

How to create Stub templates? And i read somewhere that the particular stub one is creating should've some minimum number of articles; is that true and if it is then how many? Also can we just copy paste stub templates from Wikipedia? Ayesha46 (talk) 13:05, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Ayesha46 Stub types are defined in Wikipedia:Simple Stub Project. Numerically, 1000 articles are required, but consensus determines the final outcome. A lot of past proposal such as Template:Africa-stub have failed. — *Fehufangą✉ Talk page 13:12, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the information but do you know the reasons why it failed (Africa-stub) I'm just curious to know...
Ayesha46 (talk) 13:15, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Ayesha46 Drive-by tagging (adding tags to an article without intending to improve it, including adding stub tags) is discouraged. It is expected that when a new stub category is created, there is a body of active editors that are willing to expand those stubs. — *Fehufangą✉ Talk page 13:20, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Reusing references: Can we look over your shoulder?

Apologies for writing in English.

The Technical Wishes team at Wikimedia Deutschland is planning to make reusing references easier. For our research, we are looking for wiki contributors willing to show us how they are interacting with references.

  • The format will be a 1-hour video call, where you would share your screen. More information here.
  • Interviews can be conducted in English, German or Dutch.
  • Compensation is available.
  • Sessions will be held in January and February.
  • Sign up here if you are interested.
  • Please note that we probably won’t be able to have sessions with everyone who is interested. Our UX researcher will try to create a good balance of wiki contributors, e.g. in terms of wiki experience, tech experience, editing preferences, gender, disability and more. If you’re a fit, she will reach out to you to schedule an appointment.

We’re looking forward to seeing you, Thereza Mengs (WMDE) — Preceding unsigned comment added by MediaWiki message delivery (talkcontribs) 08:54, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

A new feature for previewing references on your wiki

Montage of two screenshots, one showing the Reference Previews feature, and one showing the Page Previews feature

Apologies for writing in English. If you can translate this message, that would be much appreciated.

Hi. As talked about some weeks ago [1] [2], Wikimedia Deutschland’s Technical Wishes team introduced Reference Previews to many wikis, including this one. This feature shows popups for references in the article text.

While this new feature can already be used on your wiki, most people here are not seeing it yet because your wiki has set a gadget as the default for seeing references while changing a page. We plan to remove the default flag from the gadget on your wiki soon. This means:

  • The new default for reference popups on your wiki will be Reference Previews.
  • However, if you want to keep using the gadget, you can still enable it in your personal settings.

Having Reference Previews as the default will be good because the user experience will be the same across wikis and with the Page Previews feature, and that the software will be easier to maintain overall.

This change is planned for February 14. If you have concerns about this change, please let us know on this talk page by February 12. – Kind regards, Johanna Strodt (WMDE), 09:30, 23 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Draft

How to create a Draft article that we can publish later? Ayesha46 (talk) 12:04, 24 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You could probably use your own sandbox, if needed. SIMPLEIST (talk) 14:31, 24 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Ayesha46: Yes, a personal sandbox can be used. This wiki doesn't have a draft space like English Wikipedia. Just be sure that your sandbox meets the requirements for user pages and subpages. -- Auntof6 (talk) 14:46, 24 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I've never used sandbox before but i got some info from Wikipedia:Sandbox but I would like to know how many such sandbox can I create? Suppose I want to create a Draft article in one and list my articles created so far in other.. how can I do that? Ayesha46 (talk) 15:11, 24 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You can create your own personal sandboxes or drafts by creating subpages under your userpage. Here is an example: User:Cyber.Eyes.2005/Sandbox. Just add a suffix after your user page, and you have your own sandbox or sandboxes. If you think it's no longer needed, you can just nominate it for QD. Best, – Cyber.Eyes2005Talk 15:20, 24 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, Thanks Ayesha46 (talk) 15:42, 24 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

A page is mostly on the wrong topic

I am blocked in mainspace so keep this in mind.

I am not entirely sure how to appeal my block since I have not been able to reach the blocking admin for an appeal. But there is a page that I made which has some pretty serious factual errors. I was confused when writing the article Nanba Shrine and accidentally wrote most of it about a different shrine called Nanba Yasaka Shrine.

Is it okay for me to ask someone to move the page to my userspace so I can fix it? Immanuelle ❤️💚💙 (please tag me) 23:34, 4 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Usually, being blocked means that any problems with the articles must be fixed or stay without you, but there are some exceptions. I note that the blocking admin specifically preserved your access to non-mainspace pages like this one.
Our guide to appealing blocks is here at WP:APPEAL. The blocking admin is not the only person allowed to unblock you. Any admin may do it. You post this text on your talk page:
To make an unblock request, copy the following text to the bottom of your user talk page: {{unblock|1=Insert your reason to be unblocked here}}
The hard part is writing something in your reason section that shows that the block is not necessary. I see that the admin blocked you for repeatedly writing in complex English with poor formatting. Writing in simple English is hard to learn—we're even discussing another user in a similar situation a few topics above—but the formatting issue could be addressed more easily. If you've done other articles on other Wikis with good formatting, you could link to them in your appeal.
I see from your talk page that you're allowed to appeal at any time, from today to years from now. Don't feel too much pressure to appeal before you're ready. Wikipedia articles have no deadline. Darkfrog24 (talk) 13:12, 5 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have an idea. Why don't you make a few draft articles in your user space? If they're good, that would prove your block isn't necessary. You could even make a draft of Nanba Shrine if you feel like it. Darkfrog24 (talk) 13:16, 5 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Good advice fr33kman 18:27, 5 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Darkfrog24@Fr33kman I have been doing that for a bit. Here is my draft I just made for the actual Nanba shrine User:Immanuelle/Nanba Shrine. I do not feel that confident about my ability to write simple English but I hope it is good. Immanuelle ❤️💚💙 (please tag me) 19:43, 5 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think, if you feel ready, you should post the unblock request text on your talk page with a link to three of your drafts and say you will continue to practice and improve your formatting. Worst likely case is that an admin tells you to improve more and try again. Darkfrog24 (talk) 22:14, 5 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Another advice: I guess it's good if you can ask for reviews. Beacuse some of your drafts isn't written in an encyclopaedia tone. I.mean adding sources and improving wordings. I can even do that for you if I am allowed.
Note: this is just a mere advice! Best, Mastashat (talk) 20:12, 6 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Mastashat please work on improving them. I'd love to see what a better version of the two would look like. Immanuelle ❤️💚💙 (please tag me) 20:59, 14 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Mastashat here is another page I would appreciate you editing User:Immanuelle/Kamayama Shrine. It is one I consider complete on my end. Although I do not know if it is simple enough or encyclopedic enough.
I often have a problem where I don't know the difference between informal and simple.
You can edit all my userspace pages except for my main user page.

If you arent familiar with it CXT exists, which will give you a side by side view of what you are translating. I've only ever used it from German to English, but it can equally do English to Simple. Lee Vilenski (talk) 08:08, 26 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I tink on a very basic level ( not talking about "translating" language):
  • One idea per sentence. Short sentences.
  • Complex words or ideas are not an issue, id they are well explained.
  • If the subject is complex (most are): Try to explain, in natural language as you would to a child or a teenager. At that level, the basic concepts are ok. If the article is about science, mathematics, or physics, avoid using formulas, and use language instead.
  • Try to void rankings; they are difficult to explain, and offer little encyclopediac value (Where are the ... most beautiful beaches in ...?).
  • Try avoiding the passive voice, active voice is more readable, and easier to understand, most of the time.
  • If possible replace less common words with omre common ones. In some cases, you need a very specific meaning of a word (techical term), so you can't really replace it.
  • In many cases, a viable stub that covers the basics is better than no article at all.
  • There's a page history, you can't really make mistakes that can't be corrected easily.
  • Avoid word with more than one meaning, prefer those that only have one meaning.
Remember: Reader's Digest became successful by writing for the 'coomon people'... Eptalon (talk) 22:46, 26 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Catch-22 and edit requests

I want to change the page Joseph Stalin as the information about his father dying in 1890 is incorrect. The page is semi-protected, so I need to make a change request on the talk page. Sure. But the talk page is also semi-protected, as someone has been vandalizing it. Where should I put the edit request then? Aaron Liu (talk) 16:17, 27 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It's only auto confirmed protected - you only need a few more edits, no? You can edit the page after you have edited a few other places first. Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 20:18, 27 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, but in the unfortunate case of someone being far from it, where would one put the edit request? The template can only be put on a talk page and doesnt accept any extra parameters. Aaron Liu (talk) 23:24, 27 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Aaron Liu: I don't think anyone can be too far from four days and ten edits. But if they really can't put the request on the talk page, they could put it here on Simple talk. Just don't use the template here, because this isn't the page that needs editing. -- Auntof6 (talk) 00:38, 28 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Just here is fine. I'd have to wonder why someone would come onto simple wiki to ''only'' talk about Stalin. Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 12:23, 28 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I've just gone ahead and removed the protection. It really should not have been protected in the first place, but definitely not for such an extended period of time, especially considering it doesn't prevent the vandalism that occurs on that page. --Ferien (talk) 12:31, 28 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks!

New code of conduct

I got an email today saying that the voting has opened on the new Universal Code of Conduct. I haven't been keeping up with the news. When I read up on this a few years ago, I was still actively contributing to Wikinews, and the UCoC's "assume good faith" contradicted Wikinews' longstanding "never assume" guideline. (NA isn't perfect, but it was longstanding before I ever got there, and I supported WN getting to keep it.) Does anyone know if we have any issues with this thing? [2] Darkfrog24 (talk) 00:05, 30 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Darkfrog24
what is never assume supposed to apply to?
Irtapil (talk) 08:34, 2 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
"Never assume" is a policy on the English Wikinews. It's meant to be understood by comparing it to "assume good faith." It's a bit like "don't assume good faith or bad faith; don't assume anything." During the four years I was most active on the English Wikinews, it was pretty vague and hard to define. Darkfrog24 (talk) 20:41, 2 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Cities in Brazil and Category:Municipalities in Brazil

How do we distinguish Category:Cities in Brazil from Category:Municipalities in Brazil (and their subcategories)? Is it based on the population? Kk.urban (talk) 16:44, 14 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

There is no general agreement about what either a city or a municipality is. The words are used differently in different countries. Rathfelder (talk) 23:12, 14 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Rathfelder In the USA, there is a legal definition of a city, but this doesn't seem to be the case in Brazil. Neither English nor Portuguese Wikipedia have a category for "cities" in Brazil, only municipalities. Kk.urban (talk) 23:15, 14 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
We could merge them, but I am sure that people whose English is limited are more likely to understand the word City than Municipality. Rathfelder (talk) 23:17, 14 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Rathfelder: Seems to me that would depend on what the term is in a person's native language. If they know the term municipalidad, for example, they'd recognize municipality over city. -- Auntof6 (talk) 03:38, 15 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
True. But essentially there isnt an easy answer to this problem, which doesnt just affect Brazil - nor just cities. There are similar issues about towns and villages. Rathfelder (talk) 09:05, 15 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Extra eyes

On the article 321 BC, it doesn’t look quite right (nav bars embedded into nav bars and the commons cat buried in there). Funny part is I can’t see where it is coming from. Any extra eyes to help decipher this would be appreciated. The end goal is to get a proper layout of it as things are not where they are supposed to be and someone fubarred the process. @Auntof6 Do you see the commons on the top of the page? If not then something is jinky with mobile rendering as commons is at the top left and all the other stuff on the right and the article wording on the left. Thanks - Da LambTalk to me!Please don't eat da 🐑! 19:54, 15 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Auntof6 So I guess I’m asking myself should commons category be embedded in a nav box as no other template embeds it and we can’t control where it should be so if the nav boxes get moved for some reason then so does the commons link and we can’t assure that any other inter-Wikipedia link to a sister project would be placed with it. Thoughts? Thanks - Da LambTalk to me!Please don't eat da 🐑! 02:14, 16 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again. I have a little update regarding my message from January:

Based on feedback we received, we have changed our plans – we won’t change the default feature for previewing references here, because your wiki is not a global sysop wiki. Instead, we would like to encourage you to do it yourself.

The benefit of having Reference Previews as the default feature for reference popups is that the user experience will be consistent across wikis and with the Page Previews feature. Also, that the software will be easier to maintain overall. I am taking the liberty of notifying some of your wiki’s admins in this message: @DannyS712, @Chenzw, @Djsasso

If you would like us to help you, you can let us know on this talk page. Any questions or comments, please let me know on the same talk page. -- Best, Johanna Strodt (WMDE) (talk) 10:04, 16 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

About Templates

I created Template:User Did You Know which is taken directly from En wiki, is that OK? (I'm asking since I don't know about Template creation [as well as it's rules if there are any])-- 💌Ayesha46 (talk) 21:04, 16 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Templates on Simple Wikipedia are usually copied from English Wikipedia, so that's not an issue. However, some features like portals don't work here, so simply remove them from templates before copying. – Cyber.Eyes2005Talk 05:59, 17 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, Thanks 👍🏻 -- 💌Ayesha46 (talk) 07:37, 17 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Ayesha46 When we bring over templates we have to make a lot of changes to most of them. One as you stated is that we may not have it on our wiki (like portals and projects). We also have to simplify the English on it. There are other things that have to be done like being over the doc subpage and you also have to look at any embedded templates and see if they need to come over. Most of the templates we need are on here already and if a change is made to something at en wiki, an admin will usually update the template (some are admin only access and some are interface admin only). If you haven’t worked much in templates it’s best (like you did here) to ask about it first. Like I stated on your talk page earlier the template you brought over won’t work here due to the layout and the fact it’s a multi layered project that we don’t do on this wiki. I hope this helps you and if you have any questions, please feel free to ask me or someone else who is familiar with this wiki and templates. RfDs

Why does it appear that all the RfDs are closed on the main page and you have to look at the categories to see what is opened? I find it confusing as some discussions are closed but show with the open ones. See Wikipedia:Requests for deletion/Requests/2024. I think the archives needs to be separated from the active and only active ones shown on the page (plus the page is blue like it’s an entire archive which is what it is). Thanks - Da LambTalk to me!Please don't eat da 🐑! 21:57, 17 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

That all-blue thing sometimes happens when a request is closed incorrectly -- specifically, the "archive bottom" template isn't put at the bottom. I'm not seeing what you're talking about, so maybe someone fixed it.
The only misplaced closed ones I see now are some that you did a non-admin closure one. You probably didn't know, but while you were away we came to a consensus that we don't want non-admin closures here. The ones you closed were probably okay to close, but you didn't close them the way we would have wanted.
Also, closed requests should be moved to the section for recently closed ones. I know you just opined (vocabulary word of the day!) that closed request shouldn't even be on the page, but for now they are. -- Auntof6 (talk) 01:14, 18 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Auntof6 Ok. Thanks for that heads up as I did not know that. It just seems weird on some of the RfDs. I also noticed some do not link correctly. If you look at my recents you’ll see one I corrected on a users talk page as it was a red link and the one early about Bootstrap (library) didn’t link anywhere nor in email notifications (Ferien verified the same too). Originally it was forwarding us to the article about boots. We may need to look at the entire RfD setup and templates to make sure they are all working correctly. Great word of the day because I just used the word on Thursday in a discussion at work. Thanks - Da LambTalk to me!Please don't eat da 🐑! 01:37, 18 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Move Skibidi toilet to Skibidi Toilet

I propose moving Skibidi toilet to Skibidi Toilet (with the first T in Toilet capitalized) as that is the proper name for the series and should be capitalized. @Ayesha46 After looking through the history of the page, it shows you were the one who inserted the template on the article page. When you put any templates on articles, very few are meant for articles. The ones that are on them are the major templates which get embedded somehow) through another template via cascading (think of a waterfall when the water is coming down, it brings sticks with it and adds more to it and now you have a bunch of sticks at the bottom). You can also always look at the actual template and it will tell you where it can be used and what it does, as well as any acceptable parameters. Translation from multiple counterparts

One of the entrants in the Feminism and Folklore contest submitted a translation that they say comes from more than one other Wiki. What is the correct way to attribute this? Is attribution needed if the drafter performed as much original work as a multiple-source translation would seem to require? [3] Darkfrog24 (talk) 16:02, 18 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Darkfrog24 IMO that would be a hard one. If they only translated from different language wikis how do we know if they didn’t use a translator program. You didn’t mention how many different languages, so that would be one concern of mine. The other is if the editor verified the actual sources (to me the best way would be the access date should be the day they edited that entry with the source). As far as attribution, my thought would be if they correctly sourced it and the language is true to the sources then it should be fine. I am not aware of any attribution to a specific editor due to the requirements of sourcing. Thanks - Da LambTalk to me!Please don't eat da 🐑! 05:24, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Click on the link provided, and you'll know what I know, DL. Darkfrog24 (talk) 17:12, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Darkfrog24 Looking at it I would say yes. It should have been in the edit summary anyways. The editor can probably get away with parts translated from the (insert links to all articles they translated from). That would give attribution I believe. It would be the same as if we pulled over an article from en wiki. Just make sure there are no references put into the article for the other wikis. Thanks - Da LambTalk to me!Please don't eat da 🐑! 17:38, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
"No references put into the article for the other wikis"? I'm confused. Do you mean no non-English sources? We absolutely allow those. Darkfrog24 (talk) 23:56, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Oh wow. Yes, of course people shouldn't cite Wikipedias as sources. It's been so long since I've seen anyone do that that it didn't occur to me that that could be what you meant. This contest entrant did not make that mistake. Darkfrog24 (talk) 01:17, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
And I'm smacking my forehead but I JUST realized that three separate "translated" templates don't interfere with each other if they're on the same talk page at the same time. Darkfrog24 (talk) 00:03, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The idea is to create articles in simple English on subjects that are notable, interesting etc. Don't worry about your English, other editors will fix it if it needs fixing. Many people using this Wikipedia and editing here have a mother tongue that isn't English. Why should we punish people for creating interesting pages? Some eyes

As I’m not an expert and this particular article, K2, is not within my wheelhouse. I’ve noticed a lot of ip editing to it lately and they do a lot of small changes so I can’t really pin point where things are being introduced. What I have been able to tell is there is some WP:NPOV issues and from looking at the en wiki article this mountain seems to be located in 3 different countries, however, in our version it says it’s only in Pakistan. I’ve also seen edits where it says INDIA Pakistan (I’m pretty sure I know my countries and that is not one of them). I think some extra eyes would be beneficial.

Perhaps we could also get semi-protection on this for a bit to avoid the small changes that IPs keep making leaning it to NPOV? Thanks - PDLTalk to me!Please don't eat da 🐑! 18:23, 25 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Community Opinion Needed

Hello all,

Since we do not use the templates for expand pretty much of anything, I do not think we need them here. We have stubs for that which puts them in categories and says to help improve it, so it is redundant. What are the thoughts on deleting them? The following list are the ones I am thinking we do not need. Some do not have a lot of link backs to them, list does though. I am not talking about deleting any of the other ones, as they are needed (languages, etc.), just the ones listed below.

how many remaining?
-- 💌Ayesha46 (talk) 07:41, 11 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I know, 250k is likely a symbolic figure, but should we not also look at the quality of articles? - Perhaps think differently? When was the last time you made a major change to an article, improving its quality, rewriting for simplicity, extending the concepts it covers? - Remember, 250k is just a number. If you show a Simple English Wikipedia article to your peers, your friends, or your children, what do you want them to see? -Try it yourself: Hit 'show any page' 10 times. A possible idea of quality would be: Of those 10 articles, at least 5 are in a state that you could show them, and say: 'Look, that's what Simple English Wikipedia is about'.... In other words: they are not full of red links, and don't have any templates that they need to be improved, or that you have the feeling such templates are needed. Numbers come on their own, quality doesn't. Eptalon (talk) 08:08, 11 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
True 💯👏🏻
-- 💌Ayesha46 (talk) 08:28, 11 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I agree, newly created pages should be complete or at least contain some content. It's puzzling why we have one or two-line stubs here. This issue should be addressed similarly to how it's maybe handled on English Wikipedia; articles that are too short should be deleted upon creation. We often retain articles from that are present on English Wikipedia here, even if they lack substantial content (not even a paragraph). – Cyber.Eyes2005Talk 09:04, 11 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I agree. When we were approaching 100,000 articles, people rushed to create more and many of them got deleted for various reasons. I would have preferred not to have this brought to people's attention so that we get to the number in the normal course of events.
Besides that, reaching a certain number of articles is not actually a goal. It's not like views or subscribers on YouTube. Quality over quantity. -- Auntof6 (talk) 10:28, 11 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thing is, we should look at the quality of articles here for good metrics, rather than article count. Yes, having a lot of articles is good, but it wont matter when a majority are extremely short.- FusionSub (Talk page) (Contributions) 21:36, 11 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Quite a lot are pretty poor. Time would be better spent on improving what we have than making more. Rathfelder (talk) 12:55, 12 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Here is a metric worth aiming for. We have 27 Very Good Articles and 85 Good Articles. How about 30 VGA and 100 GA by the end of 2024? Reasonable? --Gotanda (talk) 23:07, 14 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The work on these has almost stopped. It would certainly be good to get more of them. However, the last promotion tzo GA was at the beginning of December, the last promotion to VGA was in September last year. Even if I take GA as the "easier to reach", I'd expect 1-2 of them get promoted per month. But as of now, they get nominated, some work is done, and then people seem to lose interest.... Eptalon (talk) 08:36, 17 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Also, ideally, the process should be run by a group of editors... Eptalon (talk) 10:29, 17 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You are absolutely right. A group of editors is needed, which is I guess what I was asking about interest in. 1-2 GA per month could get us to 100 GA by the end of the year. VGA is a heavier lift, but I will continue to contribute to that effort. As have you. I think it is entirely possible. And, a worthy target. A couple of the formerly good articles look close enough to bring back, like Coffee and maybe Kitzmiller, et al. v. Dover Area School District, et al. --Gotanda (talk) 09:53, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
what is also needed are stricter deadlines so that we can say that between nomination & promotion/vote there are no more than 3 or 4 months? Eptalon (talk) 06:22, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Definitely. As of now discussions never get closed. QuicoleJR (talk) 21:27, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm happy to do a bit of work with GA items - I think the biggest issue is that there isn't much input. Presumably anyone can close them after they reach 3 weeks? Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 12:47, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think it is possible. I'm hoping to have at least one finished this year. QuicoleJR (talk) 21:17, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Currently, in Feb. 27, 2024, there are exactly 1715 articles left to reach the goal of 250,000 articles. Let's keep going! Colonelsnow (talk) 11:47, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There are 1711 articles left. Simple Wikipedians are so fast they have already created 4 articles in about an hour! Colonelsnow (talk) 12:54, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Colonelsnow: Reaching a certain number of articles is not a goal! We will get to that number when we get there. -- Auntof6 (talk) 01:18, 28 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Very nice Wikipedian phrase! Colonelsnow (talk) 05:03, 28 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

QD

A lot of pages are being marked with G8, but they seem alright and there isn't any QD addition log in the edit history? Does somebody know what is going on? SI (talk) 16:49, 28 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

somebody went to delete a template redirect but forgot to add the noinclude tags around the QD MCGAMER YOUTUBE (talk) 03:22, 29 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Is this simple?

From [[April 15]]:<blockquote>The Armenian Genocide began when the Ottoman Empire undertook the systematic destruction of Armenian intellectuals and entrepreneurs within the city of Constantinople and later the entire Armenian population of the Empire.</blockquote>Is this really suitable for the Simple English Wikipedia? I wonder if someone meant to write this on the normal English Wikipedia. 123.51.107.94 (talk) 23:41, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

upgoer does not like this sentence, i agree. i would switch out the nouns in the darker colours (such as destruction, intellectuals, and entrepreneurs) and continue on with the segment from there -Astral~(he/him/his) 01:26, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
English has about half it's vocabulary from Germanic languages, the other half from Romance ones. The only thing I see there is 'undertook the systematic destruction of...' Can be replaced with 'systematically destroyed'. But as with most articles, anyone I'd free to change to them.... Eptalon (talk) 12:35, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Long-winded sentence/period? Anyone might consider dividing that sentence into two sentences (if the article has not been fixed). 2001:2020:333:B834:E810:92FE:BC67:A72E (talk) 22:26, 2 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Tool Broken

The page size tool keeps giving me "undefined B" for readable prose size every time I use it, even though it still works on enwiki. It has been a problem for several days now. Please fix this. QuicoleJR (talk) 14:42, 26 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@QuicoleJR You best place to post this is on the mediawiki project and explain in detail on what is happening. If this is a script, you will need to contact the creator of the script and do the same explanation. The gadgets and scripts are not something admins can do here unless it’s a script one of them made. You can also see if anyone else has this problem to help isolate it to the tool or to your computer. Hope this helps! @PotsdamLamb: Seems like it is a third-party tool. What do I do now? Should I try to get someone to port the enwiki version? QuicoleJR (talk) 14:52, 26 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@QuicoleJRWhat’s the link to the tool? Is it in your js file? Thanks - PDLTalk to me!Please don't eat da 🐑! 14:55, 26 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I can't find a link. What I thought was the link was switched out at some point, and I can't find the old one. QuicoleJR (talk) 15:02, 26 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@QuicoleJR I am pretty sure I found the issue but I need an interface admin to make the change. I posted on the TP of the person who made the change, but if any of the crats can flip their switch, it would be appreciated. @PotsdamLamb: The tool seems to be working now. QuicoleJR (talk) 15:23, 6 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@QuicoleJR Yes I tested it when the import was completed. If you need anything else please let me know. It was a pleasure making your edits easier :) Thanks - PDLTalk to me!Please don't eat da 🐑! 15:29, 6 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

We have entered March!

We have entered March with 248,381 articles! Starting a new month, we should all try to start a new article. I'm very excited what new things will be added to Simple Wikipedia. Colonelsnow (talk) 12:06, 1 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Please: We will get the 1619 articles eventually. So rather than mass-creating articles focus on quality. The idea is still to be able to promote 1-2 good articles per month. Eptalon (talk) 18:46, 1 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I was just trying to encourage Simple Wikipedians; not rush them. The more the people engage their time in creating articles, the more the good articles should be filtered out from bad ones. Anyway, there are thousands of contributers. Colonelsnow (talk) 04:24, 2 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, no, there are not many compared to En wiki. Macdonald-ross (talk) 13:01, 2 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It's a big difference, yes. Colonelsnow (talk) 13:15, 2 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It's not really a race. I do think there is a big requirement for more work on making quality articles, which just means helping out at Wikipedia:Good articles Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 17:26, 3 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The last two promotions there were in early/mid December last year (9th). Eptalon (talk) 17:52, 3 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well, on the bright side, it looks like Bowls will be promoted soon. QuicoleJR (talk) 13:03, 5 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm suprised that 'Bowls' is not promoted yet. Lucky to have another promotion a little afterwards, hopefully 3-4 months after the last one. Colonelsnow (talk) 04:11, 6 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Putting promotions aside, looks like Wikipedia ratified the U4C, to somehow keep maintenance of the justice of the UCoC. Colonelsnow (talk) 05:01, 6 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

A lot of the time is taken up by throwing out the rubbish and general tidying-up. The competent writers have only so much time. Macdonald-ross (talk) 15:54, 4 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Proposal for new QD criterion: duplicate page

I have proposed a new QD criterion for Recently created article that duplicates an existing topic. Please vote or comment on the discussion at Wikipedia talk:Deletion policy#Proposal to add A10 - Recently created duplicate page that would be a bad redirect. (No need to comment here.) Report of the U4C Charter ratification and U4C Call for Candidates now available

You can find this message translated into additional languages on Meta-wiki. Please help translate to your language

Hello all,

I am writing to you today with two important pieces of information. First, the report of the comments from the Universal Code of Conduct Coordinating Committee (U4C) Charter ratification is now available. Secondly, the call for candidates for the U4C is open now through April 1, 2024.

The Universal Code of Conduct Coordinating Committee (U4C) is a global group dedicated to providing an equitable and consistent implementation of the UCoC. Community members are invited to submit their applications for the U4C. For more information and the responsibilities of the U4C, please review the U4C Charter.

Per the charter, there are 16 seats on the U4C: eight community-at-large seats and eight regional seats to ensure the U4C represents the diversity of the movement.

Read more and submit your application on Meta-wiki.

On behalf of the UCoC project team,

RamzyM (WMF) 16:25, 5 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like a Wikiversial 'Supreme Court'. BTW, how will the 'court' change Wikipedia? I've only started Wiki-editing a month ago, so I don't know much about the UCoC code system. If there are any explanations, please let me know, or send me a link. Thank you.
