At the top of WWE's championship hierarchy is the WWE World Championship on SmackDown and the WWE Universal Championship on Raw. The current WWE World Champion is AJ Styles, who is in his first reign. He won the title by defeating Dean Ambrose at Backlash on September 11, 2016. The current WWE Universal Champion is Kevin Owens, who is in his first reign. He won the vacant title by defeating Big Cass, Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins in a fatal four-way elimination match on the August 29, 2016, edition of Raw.
