Baltimore County, Maryland[change source]

Hi, Allixpeeke. Thank you for creating the article about Baltimore County, Maryland. I can see that you copied it from English Wikipedia and did some simplifying -- thanks for that! However, it was still not simple enough for our readers, so I have moved it to you userspace for more work. It is now at User:Allixpeeke/Baltimore County, Maryland. You might want to read Wikipedia:How to copy from another Wikipedia to see what is needed when an article is copied from another Wikipedia. Besides all the information about simplifying and adapting it for Simple English, it's important to include attribution. Let me know if I can give you any pointers on this. When you are ready for the article to go back to mainspace, you can either move it yourself or ask an admin to do it for you. If you move it yourself, a redirect will be created: please be sure to ask for that to be deleted.

Thanks, and let me know if you have any questions about this. --Auntof6 (talk) 05:17, 25 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Auntof6, I just went through the introduction and edited it.  Although there's obviously much more 'page' to go, I think I made some real improvement so far.  Please read over the introduction and tell me what you think.  (I was a little uncertain about using the term resisted as that's not on the list, but since resistance is, I'm hoping it's okay.  Happened is also not on the list, but I really can't think of a simpler word to use in its place.)  Any suggestions or recommendations are welcome.  Yours, allixpeeke (talk) 17:33, 25 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I see some improvements. I also seem places where you probably went too far. An example of that is changing factory to big buildings that made things; not only is that unnecessary because you can just link "factory", it's inaccurate (buildings don't make things, the people in them do). As far as the term resisted, I think the "tried to stop it" that follows covers that well enough: I would probably replace both with something like didn't want.

I see you simplified individual words and phrases. Another way to simplify is to just remove unnecessary detail. This wiki doesn't need as much detail as English Wikipedia ("enwiki"). For example, we probably don't need so much detail about exactly what part of the state the county is in, or exactly what part of the county the cities are in.

One last thing: the attribution goes on the talk page, not in the actual article.

I hope that all makes sense. Let me know what other questions you have. --Auntof6 (talk) 08:13, 26 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the recommendations.  I'm erring on the side of not taking out too many details, however.  The main page says, "Simple does not mean short.  Writing in Simple English means that simple words are used.  It does not mean readers want basic information.  Articles do not have to be short to be simple; expand articles, add details, but use basic vocabulary."  But I re-added factory and corrected its definition, and removed resisted.

I've been working on the page all night, mainly on the History section, so I'll probably return to it elsewhen.  I've still more work to do on the History, Law and government, Geography, Transportation, and Demographics sections.

Thanks again,
