Lee Tae-yong (Hangul: 이태용; born July 1, 1995) is a South Korean rapper, dancer, singer-songwriter, choreographer and record producer. He is best referred to by his first name Taeyong. He is the leader of NCT—a boy band managed under SM Entertainment. In 2016, he debuted in the group's first sub-unit, NCT U. He also became the leader of its second sub-unit, NCT 127, later that year. In 2019, he joined SuperM. SuperM is a supergroup formed from a joint venture between SM and Capitol Records.

However, he has not just worked in a group. He has also performed on his own. His first single, "Long Flight", was released in 2019. As a songwriter, Taeyong has written over forty songs (in four different languages) that are mostly for NCT and himself.[2]

Life and career[change | change source]

Early life[change | change source]

Lee Tae-yong was born on July 1, 1995, in the Gwanak District of Seoul. He graduated from the School of Performing Arts Seoul.[3]

2012–16: Career beginnings[change | change source]

In 2012, Lee was spotted on the street by an S.M. agent. Tryouts for the company were held around that time. He took part by singing the national anthem. His audition was successful enough for him to pass, and he joined the agency.[4] In the same year, he was in a poster promoting To the Beautiful You—a television series that aired on SBS.

On December 2, 2013, trainee Taeyong was introduced to the public via the SM Rookies program, which included a team of S.M. trainees.[5]

In 2014, he posed in magazine pictorials with future NCT member Johnny Suh and now-Red Velvet members Irene and Seulgi.[6][7] In July, a video of him rapping part of his song "Open the Door" was uploaded onto the SMTOWN YouTube channel.[8] Later that year, he appeared with other trainees on Exo 90:2014—a show on Mnet, starring labelmates Exo, where they danced to '90s K-pop songs. Taeyong was featured in a music video remake for "Yo!" by Shinhwa and "Missing You" by Fly To The Sky.[9] In October, he featured on Red Velvet's single "Be Natural", credited then as SR14B Taeyong.[10]

2016–18: Debuting in NCT[change | change source]

On April 3, 2016, Taeyong was confirmed to be a member of NCT and its first sub-unit, NCT U. NCT U officially released their debut single, "The 7th Sense", five days later. He and bandmate Mark Lee co-wrote the song.[11] Later that year, Taeyong was announced to be a leader of NCT's second sub-unit, NCT 127, which is based in his home city Seoul. On July 6, NCT 127 debuted with their single "Fire Truck". NCT 127 released their first mini-album three days later, NCT #127. Taeyong co-wrote three songs in that album.[12][13]

Upon debut, Lee was given the main roles of rapper and dancer.[14] However, he was not experienced in dance before training. As a result, his dance coach doubted if he could keep up with his peers or not.[4]

In January 2017, NCT 127 made their first comeback with the EP Limitless.[15] Taeyong wrote four songs on the album. He was also credited as a composer for the first time ever on the track "Baby Don't Like It".[2] In June, the group released their third EP, Cherry Bomb. All songs (except "Sun & Moon") on the album, were co-written by him.[2][16] The title track, also called "Cherry Bomb", was named as one of the best K-pop songs of the year by Billboard and Idolator.[17][18] That same year, Taeyong worked with labelmates Hitchhiker and Yoo Young-jin. "Around", an experimental song produced by Hitchhiker, was released with a music video in May through the SM Station project.[19] He then joined up with Yoo to record "Cure", a pop-rock ballad. "Cure" was another song for SM Station.[20] Together with NCT 127 singers Taeil and Doyoung, Taeyong was featured on the soundtrack for School 2017. He wrote and provided the rapping on a song on the album named "Stay in My Life".[21]

In March 2018, NCT released their first studio album NCT 2018 Empathy. The album was part of the large-scale NCT project. NCT aims unite all of its subgroups. Taeyong co-wrote five songs for Empathy.[2][22] In May, Taeyong joined the cast of a variety show called Food Diary. The program follows a group of celebrities exploring farming and food production. BoA, his labelmate, was also a cast member.[23]

Taeyong co-wrote four songs for NCT 127's debut studio album, Regular-Irregular. One of them was the lead single "Regular". The song was first recorded in English and Korean,[24] but later served as the debut single for NCT's Chinese sub-unit, WayV.[25]

2019–present: Going solo, SuperM and success with NCT[change | change source]

In April 2019, NCT 127 released their first Japanese studio album, Awaken. Taeyong co-wrote the track "Lips" from the album.[2][26]

In July that year, Taeyong decided to go solo. He released "Long Flight", which he had written and co-composed. A music video for the digital single was released at the same time. The song was the last in the third season of SM Station.[27] It debuted at number six on the Billboard World Digital Song Sales chart.[28] On August 8, Taeyong was revealed to be a member of SuperM. SuperM is a K-pop supergroup that was created by SM for a joint venture with Capitol Records. The group aimed at the American market. They began promoting in the United States in October.[29][30] Their self-titled first EP was released on the fourth day of the month. Taeyong co-wrote and co-produced "No Manners" from the EP. On August 24, he and Punch duetted on a song for the Hotel del Luna soundtrack, titled "Love del Luna".[31] Later that year, Taeyong featured on a song titled "Mood" by Marteen—who is an American singer.[32]

NCT 127 released their second studio album Neo Zone on March 2020. Taeyong co-wrote three songs from it.[33] The streams and sales proved the album's success. It debuted at number five on the Billboard 200.[34] Together with its reissue The Final Round, it sold more than one million copies in South Korea by May.[35] SuperM released their first studio album Super One on September 25, for which Taeyong co-wrote the song "Together At Home".[36] In September, second project for the whole of NCT, Resonance, was announced. In addition, Taeyong was confirmed to be once again the leader of the entire band.[37]

On March 15, 2021, Taeyong opened his own SoundCloud account. He released a new demo named "Dark Clouds" and a remix on the same day.[38] He has released more songs since then: "GTA1"; "GTA2"; "Blue"; "Monroe" (featuring Baekhyun of Exo); "Rose" (featuring Seulgi of Red Velvet) and "Swimming Pool". "Dark Clouds" won the Top Comments Award—which celebrates the post with the most fan comments in a single week on SoundCloud―at the SoundCloud 2021 Playback Awards.[39] In August, Taeyong was selected as part of the judge panel for Street Woman Fighter. The dance competition show was fairly popular in South Korea.[40] He later appeared with Mark Lee as a guest judge on the program's spin-off, Street Dance Girls Fighter. Taeyong co-wrote the title track "Sticker" for NCT 127's third studio album Sticker. It went on to become the best selling album in SM Entertainment's history.[40] He was eventually credited as a choreographer and lyricist on 2021 Winter SM Town: SMCU Express―a seasonal album made by the SM Town roster. On the album, he worked on the track "Zoo" with NCT members Jeno, Hendery and Yangyang, and Giselle from Aespa.

On March 11, 2022, it was announced that Taeyong would be featured on Suran's song "Diamond" from her upcoming EP Flyin' Part 1.[41] Taeyong later announced that he had started his YouTube channel TY Track on March 14.[42] He released the performance video for another song with Suran called "Lonely" the following day.[43] Taeyong then partnered up with Wonstein for "Love Theory". The single was released on April 14 through SM Station.[44]
