Filling in bare references[change source]

Hi, Chenzw. I noticed this edit. When I did something similar, TDKR undid it. He said that when one of those list of deaths pages gets full, having the full citation templates makes it take too long to load the page. Deaths in 2016[change source]

Hey Chenzw thanks for your help! But in the article Deaths in 2016 it is a requirement that all references must be in [http:www//] format rather than the completed cite web. According to the English Wikipedia it will prevent the article from loading too much. Remember that there might be over 100 deaths in this article for January alone! My brother was not attempting to blatanty self-promote himself, but rather just write a short sentence or two about himself, which yo my knoweledge is acceptable on a personal user page. Your bot did a false revert, and Added an Incorrect warning to a user.

I do belive the bot should get a little bit of a fix, I've already Reverted the bot edit, but didn't remove the warning. SleepyMode (talk) 16:01, 9 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I have added that particular edit to the training database. The bot works by "learning" from the different features in each edit (eg. number of words added, ratio of punctuation added). Template:Pokémon directory[change source]

Hi, Chenzw. I was looking through the unused templates to see if there were any we could delete, and I came across Template:Pokémon directory. You created this in June 2008. It seems like the main point of the template is the sublists, but they are all red links. Do you think we could delete this one? --Auntof6 (talk) 07:06, 11 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I think it can be deleted. If I remember correctly, at that time, there were a few Pokemon-related RfDs, and I created the template then while trying to kickstart the addition of content on notable Pokemon. Problems

  • Some pages do not turn in up in categories where they should be. This is because link tables are sometimes not populated. [3]

Changes this week

  • The Nuke extension will work with Flow. This will make it easier to handle spam in Flow. [4]
  • New file uploads will now be patrollable. [5]
  • Internet Explorer 8 will no longer have JavaScript support. You will still be able to browse and edit Wikipedia if you use Internet Explorer 8, but will not be able to use some features. This can be solved by upgrading to a newer version or switching to a different browser. [6][7]

  • You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 12 January at 20:00 (UTC). See how to join.

Future changes

  • URLs in the recent changes IRC feed will no longer be rewritten to unencrypted HTTP. This could be a breaking change for bots dependent on the IRC feed. [8]
  • The edit tabs for the wikitext editor and the visual editor will be combined to one single edit tab. You will be able to choose which one you prefer. If you are not logged in, your choice will be saved as a cookie in your browser. You can test the single edit tab. [9][10]
  • There is a beta feature that adds links to the subject on other Wikimedia projects. This works much like the links to for example Wikipedia articles in other languages. It will go out of beta testing and be enabled for everyone in January. Wikis that don't want this can decide to have it disabled. [11][12]
  • The difference between "alerts" and "messages" notifications is unclear to some. The developers want feedback at the Phabricator task or on MediaWiki.org so they can make this better. You can give feedback in your language if you can't write in English.

I disagree with your bot[change source]

I was editing the service animal page which appeared to me to have been hit with some self-promotional material regarding helper monkeys. That section had additional material not included for other animals, external links, and name dropping. I removed the excess and entered an explanation that that is what I was doing and why. I also accidentally removed a category heading which I went back to repair, but it had been automatically reverted.

There are a good number of errors on that page as well that I wanted to correct. I am an expert on service animals. I own and operate ServiceDogCentral.org. I also have a traumatic brain injury and a particular interest in this idea of having a simpler wikipedia available for people like me who struggle with reading and for my some of my autistic people who have a similar problem. I would like to correct these factual errors and have no intention of adding any links to my own website. I only want the information to be 1. accurate and 2. simple. I think my objectives are exactly inline with wikipedia's objectives for this page.

Hi, thank you for your report. I have added your edit to the bot's database. The bot works by "learning" from pre-classified edits to determine features which makes an edit vandalism (or not). The bot operates on a series of algorithms, and please be assured that it was not the intention to discriminate in any way when your edit was reverted. Had to laugh....[change source]

An IP user created a new talk page on an existing article. The IP editor then put some gibberish on the page. Your bot tagged it for deletion. The standard form, when applied to a talk page, says: If you think this talk page should not be deleted, please add {{Wait}} below this message, and then say why on this talk page's talk page. Recent changes

  • You will be able to find or mark bugs and suggestions in Phabricator that are specific for your language or wiki. [13]
  • Notifications have been upgraded with more detailed and easier-to-access information. See the documentation. Cross-wiki notifications will be available soon on the two test wikis. [14]

Changes this week

  • The visual editor uses the TemplateData extension to make editing templates easier. You will now get a warning when you edit a TemplateData form and leave it without saving. [15]
  • MediaWiki will get a new authentication and authorization system called AuthManager. This is planned to happen in a month or two. Some bots will need to change how they log in. Two new and more stable authentication methods will be available now: Owner-only OAuth credentials and bot passwords. You can read more about the change. [16]
  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 19 January. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 20 January. It will be on all Wikipedias from 21 January (calendar).

The bot did cut out my added expression "Hi there, I am using whatsapp" on the Al-Qaeda:talk. How could that happen? In my opinion whatsapp is a very important fragment of the communicational globalization process. (talk page stalker) The bot is working correctly. The talk page for the article is for discussing improvements to the article. While your opinion on the importance of any particular app may be shared by many, the fact that you are using it is not relevant in any way to improving the article. Some editors create accounts for use here, and having created an account, they may mention on the user page for that account that they use or like a particular app -- this would an ok place to mention something like this, although ultimately, even user pages are intended for improving the encyclopedia. Recent changes

  • You can now follow when pages are added or removed from a category on German Wikipedia. The plan is to add it to Wikimedia Commons and other Wikipedias this week. [17][18]
  • Administrators can hide individual entries of a page with RevisionDelete. There is now a button to choose "all", "none" or "inverse" in Special:Log. The article history will get the same buttons soon. Wikis that have done this locally with JavaScript will be able to remove that code. [19]

Changes this week

  • You will be able to see the references when you preview a section you are editing. This will happen even if there is no <references /> tag in that section. [20]
  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 26 January. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 27 January. It will be on all wikis from 28 January (calendar).

Future changes

  • There is now an extension called ArticlePlaceholder. It can automatically generate content on Wikipedia with data from Wikidata if there is no Wikipedia article. It will have a tag to remind the reader it is not an article and ask the reader to create one. The developer is now looking for smaller Wikipedias that want to try the extension. [21]
  • The OTRS system will be upgraded. The plan is to do this on 3 February at 08:00 (UTC). It will probably take 6 to 8 hours. OTRS will be down during the upgrade. [22]
  • Users will soon be automatically congratulated when they reach some edit count milestones. [23]

Abuse filter[change source]

Hey Chenzw, hope you're doing well. I'm not sure who manages the abuse filter here (I know there isn't edit filter managers), but this sort of edit should be getting at least warned and tagged, if not disallowed. Riley Huntley (talk) 01:46, 30 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
