Gretna is the second-largest city in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States.[4][5] Gretna is on the west bank of the Mississippi River. It is just east and across the river from uptown New Orleans. It is part of the New Orleans–MetairieKenner Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 2020, 17,814 people lived there.[3]

Gretna was created in 1836.[6] It was called Mechanicsham.

Gretna is at 29°54′59″N 90°3′15″W / 29.91639°N 90.05417°W / 29.91639; -90.05417 (29.916459, -90.054260)[7] and has an elevation of 0 feet (0 m)[1] behind the levee along the Mississippi River.

The United States Census Bureau says that the city has a total area of 4.5 square miles (11.6 km2). Of that, 4.0 square miles (10.4 km2) is land and 0.5 square miles (1.2 km2) (10.2%) is water.
