Trumpism is a right-wing political movement based on the ideology of Donald Trump, who was the 45th President of the United States from 2016 (when he defeated Hillary Clinton in the presidential election) until 2020 (when he lost the presidential election to Joe Biden). He remains a very active member of the Republican Party and is a candidate for the 2024 presidential election. The Trumpist faction of the Republican Party, the Freedom Caucus, is now the largest faction in the federal Republican Party.

Trumpism is a right-wing ideology that is heavily influenced by national conservatism,^[1] right-wing populism^[2]^[3] ^[4] and social conservatism.^[5]^[6]^[7] Some have also claimed that Trumpism is Trump's cult of personality.^[8] It has also been described as Americanist,^[9] Christian rightist,^[10]^[11] illiberal, isolationist,^[12] libertarian,^[13] nationalist,^[14]^[15] nativist,^[16]^[17] neo-fascist, protectionist,^[18]^[19] semi-authoritarian^[20]^[21] and ultraconservative.^[22]

Similar ideologies overseas[change | change source]

Many foreign right-wing or far-right^[23] politicians have been described as their country's version of Trump or who have been major allies of Trump. These include Argentina's Javier Milei,^[24]^[25] Australia's Pauline Hanson^[26]^[27] and Clive Palmer,^[28] Brazil's Jair Bolsonaro,^[29]^[30] France's Marine Le Pen,^[31] Hungary's Viktor Orbán,^[32]^[33]^[34] Italy's Silvio Berlusconi^[35] and Giorgia Meloni,^[36]^[37]^[38] Japan's Shinzo Abe,^[39] the Netherlands' Geert Wilders^[40]^[41]^[42]^[43] and the United Kingdom's Nigel Farage.^[44]

During the lead-up to the 45th Canadian federal election, the Liberal government of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau compared the Conservative opposition to the Republican Party and the MAGA movement^[45] and compared Opposition Leader Pierre Poilievre to Trump.^[46]
