Santo Domingo Este is a Dominican municipality and the provincial capital of the Santo Domingo province. It is on the eastern (left) side of the Ozama River.

There is only one municipal district in the Santo Domingo Este municipality (a municipal district in the Dominican Republic is similar to a municipality but they depend on the municipality). The municipal district is San Luis.[3]

History[change | change source]

Santo Domingo Este was part of the Distrito Nacional and of the Santo Domingo city until 2001 when the Santo Domingo province was created. The Santo Domingo Este was made the head municipality of this new province.

Geography[change | change source]

Santo Domingo Este has a total area of 154.94 km².[1] It is found in the "Llano Costero del Caribe" (English: "Caribbean Coastal Plain"), a large plain in southeastern Dominican Republic where there are many savannas with grasses. There are not mountains in the province, only some very low hills.

The River Ozama is the eastern and northern limits of the municipality; it is the only important river in the municipality.

Population[change | change source]

The municipality had, in 2010, a total population of 948,885: 458,003 men and 490,882 women. The urban population was 92.56% of the total population. In this numbers are included the population of the San Luis municipal district. The population of Santo Domingo Este without the municipal district was 891,952.[2]
