Wikipedia translation of the week: 2024-31

The Nederlandsche Cocaïnefabriek (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈneːdərlɑntsə koːkaːˈinəfaːˌbrik]; English: Dutch Cocaine Factory) or NCF was an Amsterdam-based company producing cocaine for medical purposes in the 20th century. It imported its raw materials mainly from the Dutch East Indies and sold its products across Europe, making good profits especially in the early years of World War I. The NCF produced morphine, heroin and ephedrine as well.

Stuff that probably should stay in a article

Hi. "The economy does not have growth (as April 2024), of that kind that is called GDP growth, according to Worldbank.org" (Ref.)--'Reverting good-faith edit', is not a justification for why you might want to revert any edit; Please consider putting in the work, of being more specific (if you are thinking about reverting this new text, from an article).--I will be busy fixing other articles (so i have no expectation of re-visiting your talk page, this year). 80.67.37.2 (talk) 10:42, 29 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Cactus. I just closed this RfD. Let me just remind you that "RfD" is "request for deletion", not "request for discussion". If you think a page should be redirected, then redirect it. If you want to discuss it first, you can do that at Simple talk. Thanks. -- Auntof6 (talk) 04:48, 30 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This was deleted per Wikipedia:Requests for deletion/Requests/2012/Multiple article message boxes, and it fits QD G4. Do you still think this is needed? MathXplore (talk) 09:07, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@MathXplore I think it is needed because there are some current sporting events that are going to take place this year. However, when it was nominated for deletion, it was stated it was 'pointless', but now there is a use for them. Thanks Cactus🌵 spiky ouch 09:09, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

RfD nomination of Template:Current sport

An editor has requested deletion of Template:Current sport, a page you created. We appreciate your changes, but the nominator doesn't believe that the page meets Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in the nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").

Please comment on the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Requests for deletion/Requests/2024/Template:Current sport and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also change the page during the discussion to address the nominator's concerns. But you should not remove the requests for deletion template from the top of the page; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you very much. MathXplore (talk) 09:14, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This is your last warning. The next time you disrupt Wikipedia, you may be blocked from changing pages without any more notices. MathXplore (talk) 22:50, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@MathXplore How are they disruptive edits? Cactus🌵 spiky ouch 11:30, 2 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Causing admins to warn again and again is disruptive enough. MathXplore (talk) 11:43, 2 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@MathXplore But shouldn't the admin who asked me to not comment be the one to warn me, if they think its disruptive? Cactus🌵 spiky ouch 11:45, 2 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Ferien: What do you think about this? MathXplore (talk) 11:47, 2 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I wasn't going to give one of these warning templates initially, as I think there are times where it's better writing a more custom message, but I think that was my third notice for you to stop commenting on checkuser blocks. I believe I gave a notice here before to not comment on unblock requests, and then you did it again on User talk:DestroyerOfWikis54, yet you still continued to comment. It is disruptive as it can make the situation more complicated to deal with, please just let admins and checkusers deal with it. --Ferien (talk) 11:56, 2 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! About 6 established user-accounts have edited the article since April 24.--The article is in good hands (or okay hands), one might say.--You have added two tags in front of the lede. Readability (of that wiki-article) does not improve, with a lot of noise in front of the lede.--Another suggestion: please copy any particular red links, to List for creation of articles. (I don't think that List will make much of a difference for these red links. However, if you start a one-line article, about any of the red-links, then i will quite possibly see it, and add some words, and a reference.)--Have a nice day! 2001:2020:357:C807:5007:8B13:74D9:874E (talk) 00:37, 3 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I thought it was disrupting others using the sandbox. Cactus🌵 spiky ouch 08:25, 4 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The common sandbox (as opposed to a user's personal sandbox) is for anyone to use at any time. Anyone might use it and do pretty much anything to it, so there is no expectation that something you put there will remain. Therefore, the only kind of disruption that can be on that sandbox is if someone posts something that isn't allowed anywhere, such as personal attacks or child pornography. -- Auntof6 (talk) 09:12, 4 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Have you found a claim of notability in the article? MathXplore (talk) 08:11, 4 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I mean a news source says about it. Cactus🌵 spiky ouch 08:11, 4 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Do you mean a claim of notability is included in the news source? If so, which claim would be that? MathXplore (talk) 08:14, 4 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@MathXploreIsn't a new source stating about the article a claim of notability? Cactus🌵 spiky ouch 08:15, 4 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It depends on the type of news. News about awards/nominations may be like that. Anything less than that may not. When starting RFDs, can you always try to explain why the page does not fit QD? I'm asking this because I was about to delete the page as QD A4. MathXplore (talk) 08:18, 4 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I didn't know that. Feel free to QD the page and close the discussion. Cactus🌵 spiky ouch 08:19, 4 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
When we say "claim of notability," we mean a statement about the subject that is something that makes them notable. (See the various guidelines on notability for what makes a subject notable.) Then, ideally, that statement should be backed up with a reference.
This article has only three facts about the person: their name, their nationality, and the fact that they are a singer. None of those makes a person notable. There is no claim of notability, so the article is eligible for QD. We get frequent complaints that the admins don't keep up with closing RfDs. The community can help with that by using the QD process when applicable, because QDs can be handled right away. This one is clearly eligible for QD, so that would have been the better way to go. -- Auntof6 (talk) 09:19, 4 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, last time I used a QD about notability, I was decline, so I wasn't really sure. Thanks for the detailed explanation. :) Cactus🌵 spiky ouch 10:26, 4 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If there's a claim of notability in the article, we can't use the QD option. That was probably why it was declined. It can take a while to learn when to use which option. I'd rather see you get declined a few times and learn when QD is possible, than to use RfD all the time. -- Auntof6 (talk) 12:18, 4 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Auntof6 Alright, thanks Cactus🌵 spiky ouch 22:14, 4 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'd like to suggest you take some time to read Wikipedia:Deletion policy#Quick deletion. That page has the full definition of each of the quick deletion options, organized by which kind of page each can be applied to. The short descriptions you see in some places don't give all the detail that the admins have to take into account when evaluating QD requests. -- Auntof6 (talk) 11:30, 6 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Suffrage drama (also known as suffrage plays or suffrage theatre) is a form of dramatic literature that emerged during the British women's suffrage movement in the early twentieth century. Suffrage performances lasted approximately from 1907-1914. Many suffrage plays called for a predominant or all female cast. Suffrage plays served to reveal issues behind the suffrage movement.

Hi, Cactus. A few things about this template you copied from enwiki:

  • It isn't categorized properly. The only category is one we don't have here. We don't have, and often don't want, the same categories as enwiki, so you need to find an appropriate category that exists here.
  • There is only one link in the body of the template. I know there is one in the heading, but it's best to have more than one in the body.
  • The template contains broken anchors. You can see the change that Cewbot made to flag them.

When you bring a template here from enwiki -- when you bring any page, in fact -- look it over to see if there's anything in it that isn't applicable to Simple English Wikipedia, and take care of whatever isn't applicable. It's rare that a navigational box like this can be copied exactly and be ready for use here. -- Auntof6 (talk) 21:54, 13 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

COSMETICBOT

Hi, Just a heads up you might want to read en:WP:COSMETICBOT, Basically you shouldn't be making edits such as this unless your edit is making a difference to the visual rendering of a page (ie a visible change yourself and a reader can see)

  • This is fine because you removed a huge gap between the text above and the stub below
  • Some may disagree but I would say your edit here is borderline okay because you could argue you're making it easier for people to edit (still no visual difference though)
  • This isn't okay as you're just removing whitespace which makes no visual difference to the page,

Just removing whitespace is not okay and for what it's worth I got dragged to ANI at EN over this exact same issue, You can remove whitespace as long as you make a visual change with it, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 11:34, 18 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

B1 is a medical-based Paralympic classification for blind sport. Athletes in this classification are totally or almost totally blind. It is used by a number of blind sports including blind tennis, para-alpine skiing, para-Nordic skiing, blind cricket, blind golf, five-a-side football, goalball and judo. Some other sports, including adaptive rowing, athletics and swimming, have equivalents to this class.

The B1 classification was first created by the IBSA in the 1970s, and has largely remained unchanged since despite an effort by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) to move towards a more functional and evidence-based classification system. Classification is often handled on the international level by the International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA) but it sometimes handled by national sport federations. There are exceptions for sports like athletics and cycling, where classification is handled by their own governing bodies.

Equipment utilized by competitors in this class may differ from sport to sport, and may include sighted guides, guide rails, beeping balls and clapsticks. There may be some modifications related to equipment and rules to specifically address needs of competitors in this class to allow them to compete in specific sports. Some sports specifically do not allow a guide, whereas cycling and skiing require one.

Underpopulated categories

Hi, Cactus. I just noticed that you were working on some of the categories that I proposed a fix for. You might not have understood, but I am making a concentrated effort to take care of the ones that move from year categories to decade categories. If you also want to work on them, please coordinate with me so that we don't work on the same things.

Besides that, it's OK for "<year> births" and "<year> deaths" categories to be underpopulated, and also their required parent categories as necessary. (None of those should have been tagged as underpopulated, and you'll notice that I didn't list any of those in my suggestion at User:Ferien/TBA/P3.) Those are some of the exceptions to the 3-entry rule, so you didn't need to look at those. Please undo the ones you did. If you want to work on any more of this, please run it by someone so we can make sure to get it right the first time. Thanks! -- Auntof6 (talk) 15:52, 28 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Cactus. I'm sorry if I was harsh with my response to your comment. I've been trying to get people not to get into discussions on RfDs that don't relate to the RfD (although I've been guilty of that myself).

To address your comment, though, if you look at all the WikiProjects we have, I'd bet most of them are in the userspace of inactive users. There's a difference between a project being under an inactive user and a project being under a vanished user. For all intents and purposes, a vanished user is a non-existent user. -- Auntof6 (talk) 08:06, 2 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Don't edit-war with vandals

Hi, please read en:Wikipedia:Don't edit-war with vandals or sockpuppets. If a vandal clearly has no intention to stop, wait for an admin to block them, there's no point reverting them again and again (and by doing so inflating the article's version history). @LilianaUwU and Codename Noreste: fyi the same advice applies to you. Using QD G5‎

Hello @Cactusisme, I have removed the QD tag you placed on the article Dogsled Music Group. You tagged it as QD G5; however, the author of the article was blocked as {{Spamusernameblocked}}, so G5 does not apply in this case. G5 only applies to articles created by an editor while evading a block. Also, the article was already listed at the RFD, you can vote there; Wikipedia:Requests for deletion/Requests/2024/Dogsled Music Group‎. – Cyber.Eyes.2005Talk 10:40, 4 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You may have. The issue when a non-admin does it is that they haven't been given extra responsibility like the admins have. The Cappadocian calendar was a solar calendar that was derived from the Persian Zoroastrian calendar. It is named after the historic region Cappadocia in present-day Turkey, where it was used. The calendar, which had 12 months of 30 days each and five epagomenal days, originated between 550 and 330 BC, when Cappadocia was part of the Persian Achaemenid Empire. The Cappadocian calendar was identical to the Zoroastrian calendar; this can be seen in its structure, in the Avestan names and in the order of the months. The Cappadocian calendar reflects the Iranian cultural influence in the region.

Non-admin closure of RfDs

We don't really do that here (see this discussion), so please don't. Thanks. -- Auntof6 (talk) 16:40, 12 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) - Hi @Auntof6, Just curious do you have any examples of problematic RFD closures ?,
If you're referring to Wikipedia:Requests for deletion/Requests/2024/Template:Hospitals in State of Palesitne and Wikipedia:Requests for deletion/Requests/2024/Alireza-Jadidi then yourself and the other admin didn't close it and I wouldn't say these were problematic ?, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 18:16, 12 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I don't remember every case, so I can't point to any that were problematic. However, that's not the point. The point is that we decided not to have them here. -- Auntof6 (talk) 03:30, 13 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Davey2010: Sorry, forgot to ping you. -- Auntof6 (talk) 03:30, 13 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Auntof6, So if you don't have examples then why this message ?, Cleaning up after admins I wouldn't was in the purview of that discussion - If Cactus didn't close it then who would and when ?, One closure was 5 hours later and the other was 12 hours later ..... So I don't see where the problem is?, If they were closing discussions as keep/snow keep then sure you'd have a point/arguement to make ... but they don't ...., Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 07:59, 13 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Davey2010: We didn't decide not to have non-admin closures when they're problematic. We decided not to have them at all. So in that sense I guess they're all problematic.
I don't see this as "cleaning up after admins" (passive aggressive much?). On the one for hospitals in Palestine, I specifically said I wasn't closing it and another admin would need to do it. If Cactus didn't close it, an admin eventually would. I know people don't like it when RfDs stay open past their date, or after an action has already been taken, but in cases like the ones you list it makes no difference exactly when it gets closed -- it's not like a bad page stayed on existence any longer.
So I've said all I have to say on this. @Cactusisme: please don't close any more, for any reason, no matter what the situation is. @Davey2010: If you want to re-revisit non-admin closures, please do so as a general discussion. -- Auntof6 (talk) 08:08, 13 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Auntof6 I agree we did however the community clearly expected more from the admins in terms of closing the discussions,
I don't see how that's passive aggressive - someone's taking the time of their day to clean up the mess an admin left behind which they don't have to do - if admins closed RFDs after then this would be a non-issue, I appreciate that but leaving the RFD open invites people to comment when the article has already been deleted so in that respect I would say there is some urgency in closing them,
Regarding the hospital RFD; Why would you nominate the template for deletion and then QD it after anyway? (the RFD was open by yourself so imho you should've left the deletion to another admin - was there any urgency here?, also the RFD should trump the authors wishes anyway),
@Cactusisme continue as you are. Happy editing all, –Davey2010Talk 08:23, 13 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Extending RfDs

I noticed you extended the RfD at Wikipedia:Requests for deletion/Requests/2024/Ibrahim Alkurd but you did two things wrong in there, which I have fixed for you. The things you got wrong were: 1) 34 September is not a real date 2) You left your comment about extending it in the footer, which is generally agreed upon that you probably shouldn't do that as it turns the footer into a reply on the technical level. Happy editing.- FusionSub (Talk page) (Contributions) 06:20, 27 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) In fact, in the past we have considered that RfDs that aren't linked on the main page aren't active. The best course of action is to consult the person who created it to see if they want the RfD listed, because they might have changed their mind. The wildlife of the archipelago of Bahrain, is more varied than might be expected of this small group of islands in the Persian Gulf. Apart from a strip of the north and west of the main island, where crops are grown with irrigation, the land is arid. With a very hot dry summer, a mild winter, and brackish groundwater, the plants need adaptations in order to survive. Nevertheless, 196 species of higher plant have been recorded here, as well as about seventeen species of terrestrial mammals, many birds and reptiles, and many migratory birds visit the islands in autumn and spring.

The little Danes experiment was a 1951 Danish operation where 22 Greenlandic Inuit children were sent to Danish foster families in an attempt to re-educate them as "little Danes". While the children were all supposed to be orphans, most were not. Six children were adopted while in Denmark, and sixteen returned to Greenland, only to be placed in Danish-speaking orphanages and never live with their families again. Half of the children experienced mental health disturbances, and half of them died in young adulthood. The government of Denmark officially apologised in 2020, after several years of demands from Greenlandic officials.

Kharayeb (Arabic: الخرايب) is a historic town in the Sidon District in the South Governorate, Lebanon. The town is 77 km (48 mi) south of Beirut, and stands at an average altitude of 190 m (620 ft) above sea level. The town boasts a rich historical legacy, with archaeological excavations revealing a complex settlement history spanning from Prehistory to the Ottoman period. Notably, Kharayeb's origins can be traced back to the Persian period (539–330 BC), when it played a pivotal role in the region's agricultural and economic landscape, culminating in the construction of its Phoenician temple around the 6th century BC.

Fwiw I had hoped to save these by removing the notes and moving the cites to the names ... however imho the "(0650)" stuff, "evolves from/too", "Chespin (#650)" / "Chesnaught (#652)" and their names overall were just far too complex, Probably could be saved if someone really wanted to invest hours into it but I felt no matter which way I approached the article the end result would still be complex, Sorry I did at least try. Thanks. –Davey2010Talk 17:33, 26 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Placenta cake is a dish from ancient Greece and Rome consisting of many dough layers interspersed with a mixture of cheese and honey and flavored with bay leaves, baked and then covered in honey. The dessert is mentioned in classical texts such as the Greek poems of Archestratos and Antiphanes, as well as the De agri cultura of Cato the Elder. It is often seen as the predecessor of baklava and börek.
