Selena Quintanilla-Perez (April 16, 1971 - March 31, 1995) was an Mexican American Tejano pop singer, dancer, actress, model, and fashion designer. Commonly referred to as Selena, she was first known as a the lead singer to her family band, Selena y Los Dinos in the early 1980s. Selena then signed a music contract to EMI Latin in 1989. Selena continued to keep her notable status in the early 1990s by winning a Grammy Award for her album, "Selena Live!" in 1993, while her album attained gold status from the RIAA. In 1994, Selena's fourth and final studio album, "Amor Prohibido" became Latin's "best selling album of all time". Selena was reffered as the "Queen of Tejano music" and the Mexican Madonna. She became Billboard's "best Latin artist of the 90s" because of her fourteen singles that charted Billboard's Hot Latin Tracks.[1] Selena also had the most successful singles of 1994 and 1995, "Amor Prohibido" and "No Me Queda Más".[2][3]

During the morning hours of March 31, 1995, Selena was shot and killed by her friend and employee to Selena's clothing stores. Selena's death reactions were compared to the deaths of John Lennon and Elvis Presley. Selena's life and death became a biopic film starring Jennifer Lopez as "Selena" in the film of the same name in 1997 by Warner Bros. Selena's life was also based on the musical play about her in, "Selena Forever". Selena was given a statue and museum in the state of Texas in 2007.

Early life[change | change source]

Selena was born in a local hospital in Lake Jackson, Texas. She was the youngest of her two siblings. Selena's parents, Abraham Quintanilla Jr was a Mexican American singer for his band, "Los Dinos" and Marcella Ofelia Samora is an half-Cherokee Indian and half-Mexican women. Selena was raised as a Jehovah's Witness. At the time of birth her parents did not have a name for a daughter, the two were told by a doctor that they will be having a boy and were going to name their son "Marc Antony". A nurse, who helped Marcella give birth, told her of the name "Selena". As Selena grew up, her father taught his children about music. While Abraham was teaching his only son, A.B. Quintanilla to play the guitar, Selena began to sing a song. Abraham, who was very surprised that his daughter can sing, formed the band "Selena Y Los Dinos" (English: Selena and The Guys). Selena's sister, Suzette Quintanilla was placed on drums. Selena and her family band played at her fathers Mexican restaurant "Papa Gayos" (English: Parrots) until a few months after opening, when the restaurant was forced to close due to the rescission of 1982. Selena and her family were thrown out of their house and became poor. Her family then gather their belongings and moved to Corpus Christi, Texas where Abraham's parents were living. There, they performed wherever they could at street corners, weddings, quinceañeras, and fairs.

Independent Studio Albums (1984-1989)[change | change source]

Selena and her band became even more successful when they were given a singing contract from "Freddie Records" in 1983. Selena began singing on TV shows like the "Johnny Canales Show" which helped Selena become more popular as a singer. Selena released her first album called "Selena y Los Dinos" in 1984. The album was not sold in stores and her father bought all of the original copies. It was re-released in 1995 under the title Mis Primeras Grabaciones. Selena had done well in school but due to her popularity growing her father took her out of school when she was in the eight grade, Selena continued her education on the road with mailed-in studies from corresponding schools. When Selena was seventeen she earned a high school diploma from The American School of Correspondence in Chicago, Illinois.

In 1985, Selena released her second album "The New Girl in Town" from "Cara Records". Selena performed hits from the album on the "Johnny Canales Show" which the single "Oh Mama" became her first live television broadcast. Selena released her third album "Alpha" from Manny Guerra who was a Tejano singer in the 1980s. Selena released several more albums from his labels until 1989. Selena won Female Vocalist of the year at the Tejano Music Awards in 1987, Selena was awarded for this award for eight years in a row.

Early success (1989-1993)[change | change source]

In the year 1988, Selena met Chris Pérez, who had his own Rock band. In two years, the Quintanilla family hired him to perform in Selena's band. Chris and Selena quickly fell in love. Her father did not like their relationship and fired Chris from the band. He then accepted the relationship. On April 2, 1992, Selena and Chris were married in Nueces County, Texas. In the year 1989, José Behar, who was the head of Sony Music Latin, signed Selena with Capitol/EMI. He later said that he signed Selena because he had thought she was the next Gloria Estefan. Selena became Coca-Cola's spokesman in Texas during the same year.

José Behar wanted to sign Selena for a English language album, a crossover. Selena recorded the songs Only Love and Where Did The Feeling Go? for the heads of EMI, who later did not want Selena to begin this project. They told José Behar that Selena needed more fans. Selena released her debut album, "Selena" in the year 1989. Selena worked with many types of music such as Tejano, Cumbias, Reggae, and traditional Mexican music. Selena's brother, A.B. Quintanilla III wrote almost the Selena's next album. He became Selena's main songwriter. In the year 1990, Selena released her second album "Ven Conmigo" (English: Come with me). This album became the first female Tejano album to become gold by the RIAA. Around the same time a nurse named Yolanda Saldivar came up to Abraham Quintanilla for a chance to start a Selena fan club in San Antonio, Texas. Her wish at starting a fan club was allowed and she became the fan club president and best friends to Selena.

In the year 1992 and after getting married to Chris Perez, Selena released her next album "Entre A Mi Mundo" (English: Enter my world). The album helped Selena to sing in Mexico and South America because of her hit singles, "Como La Flor" (English: Like a flower) and "Baila Esta Cumbia" (English: Dance to this cumbia). This album became, just like Selena's second album, to reach gold. In the year 1993, Selena released her first live album, "Selena Live!", this album also had three new songs that were not live. "Selena Live" helped Selena to be nominated for a Grammy Award for "Best Mexican American Album" she won the award in 1994.

Late success (1994-1995)[change | change source]

In 1994, Selena released her last studio album called "Amor Prohibido" (English: Forbidden love). This album was nominated for a Grammy Award for the same title as "Selena Live" was nominated for. "Amor Prohibido" became "Latin's best-selling album of all time" after selling more than 2,000,000 copies in 1994. Four singles that were on the album became #1 on the U.S. Billboard' Hot Latin Tracks, Selena became the first and only Spanish album by a female to accomplished this act. "Amor Prohibido" also became the #1 album on Billboard's Latin Albums and Regional Mexican Albums.

Selena opened two clothing stores called "Selena Etc." in 1994. One of the stores was opened in San Antonio while the second clothing store was in Corpus Christi. Both had in-house beauty salons. Hispanic Business magazine reported that Selena earned over five million dollars from her stores. Selena also appeared with Erik Estrada in a Latin soap opera called Dos Mujeres, Un Camino (English: Two women, one path). Selena and her band continued to be awarded from Billboard's Premio Lo Nuestro (English: Our Awards) who gave them six awards including "Best Latin Artist" and "Song of the Year" for "Como La Flor. Coca-Cola released a tribute bottle to celebrate their fifth year relationship. Elsewhere, her duet with the Barrio Boyzz, called "Donde Quiera Que Estés" (English: Wherever you are) reached #1 on the Billboard Latin Charts. The success of the song helped Selena to tour in New York City, Argentina, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Central America. Her other duet "Buenos Amigos" (English: Good friends) with Salvadoran singer Álvaro Torres reached #1 on Billboard as well.

During the fall of 1994, Amor Prohibido became a success in Mexico and replaced Gloria Estefan's "Mi Tierra" (English: My homeland) on the music charts #1 spot. The album sold over 400,000 copies by late 1994 in the U.S. and over 50,000 copies were sold in Mexico, reaching gold status. Around the same time, Selena began developing plans to record her crossover album. Selena continued to tour for Amor Prohibido while her crossover was getting prepared. In the year 1995, Selena made her appearance on the romantic comedy film Don Juan DeMarco, which Marlon Brando, Johnny Depp and Fay Dunaway were the main stars. She was a background mariachi singer only in the first scene. In February 1995, Selena performed in a concert at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo in the Houston Astrodome, which over 65,000 fans attended more than country stars such as George Strait, Vince Gill and Reba McEntire. In March she attended Miami's Calle Ohco Festival which over 100,000 fans attended the event. She was also going to become one of the new stars of a new telenovela produced by Emilio Larrosa. Selena visited local schools, even with a busy schedule, to talk to students about how important school is and how earning a high school diploma is the most important thing that they can get. She also donated her time and energy to civic organizations such as D.A.R.E. and planned a fund raising concert to help people living with AIDS. Selena being active for her community won her loyalty from her fans. Selena scheduled her English album to be release in July 1995.

Death[change | change source]

During early 1995, Selena's family learned that Yolanda Saldivar was stealing money from the "Selena Fan Club" and were going to fire her. A meeting between Selena, her family, and Yolanda happened a few weeks after, Yolanda told them that she did not steal any of the money and was going to prove that she did not steal. Three weeks later, during the morning hours of March 31, 1995, Selena met up with Yolanda Saldivar at her Days Inn motel, she did this secretly. Yolanda told Selena that she was raped during her trip in Mexico. Selena drove Yolanda to a local hospital, where they found no rape evidence on her. Selena then drove her back to her room at the Days Inn where Selena began asking for missing papers.

Selena told Yolanda that she could not be trusted anymore and was going to end their friendship. As Selena turned around to leave, Yolanda Saldivar took a gun and shot Selena in the back. Selena, who was now wounded, ran out of her room to the motel's lobby. Yolanda Saldivar ran after Selena and called her a "bitch". Selena fell to the floor as she screamed others to help her and to lock the doors that her shooter was going to shot her again. Selena named her shooter to everyone before passing out on the floor. A clerk then called 9-1-1. An ambulance arrived where Selena was laying at and quickly put a Vaseline, which quickly stopped Selena from bleeding more. Selena was then transported to Memorial Hospital. The paramedics could not find any veins on Selena because she "bleed out" when the gun entered and damaged a main artery which stopped any blood to flow to her heart. Selena was pronounced dead at 1:05 p.m. Yolanda Saldivar kept police and crisis negotiators for nearly ten hours until she gave herself up and was then arrested.
