How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Hi. I noticed that you closed Wikipedia:Requests for deletion/Requests/2021/Nithish as delete but the article still exists ( Nithish ). I wonder if perhaps you forgot to press delete? Blissyu2 (talk) 08:25, 5 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I was fixing the deletion reasons; when deleting the templated reason always takes the current year (2022), which doesn't work for requewsts that started in the old year and get closed inthe new one. I have re-delted the page.--Eptalon (talk) 08:52, 5 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Eptalon. Just wanted to talk about the deletion of Di'Ja. Looking at it, I'm not sure it qualifies for A4. "Won the Best New Artist award at the 2008 Beat Music Awards." and "was nominated for the Best Urban/R&B Single at the 2009 Canadian Radio Music Awards" are both claims to notability. Would you be opposed to restoring the page and doing an RfD instead? Thanks.--Gordonrox24 | Talk 16:48, 23 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

stupid browser

I've probably asked this quite a few times, but it is really getting on my nerves, Firefox, no matter what I do, even clicking "Keep Me logged in" or making an test edit in the sandbox every few hours or so, so as to try to generate account activity to prevent the session from timing out, still gets me logged out. Do you think this is a Firefox, or media wiki issue? Thanks! Tsugaru let's talk! :) 22:19, 25 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) @つがる: Probably firefox. A quick search shows quite a few people have had this problem, on all sorts of websites, when using firefox over the years. If you google search "Firefox keeps logging me out" you'll come up with a bunch of firefox tech support threads, maybe one of those will have a fix that might help you. Lots of them seem to be solved by adjusting some privacy settings. --Gordonrox24 | Talk 00:07, 26 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the information. I will take a look on the firefox websites. My firefox was/is a bit different, as it's a custom firefox for Linux Mint, however, recentely a new partnership came in place. Which might change the firefox settings a bit more. --Tsugaru let's talk! :) 01:14, 26 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately, AFAIK, I am limited in web browsers in Linux Mint. If I use Chromium (in the past) and Opera, it messes with the APT Cache and Update Manager. Protection

Hey Eptalon, should 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine be edit protect for a month similar to Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskyy's article protections given that article is the war in question. --TDKR Chicago 101 (talk) 05:42, 26 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, that's the war in question. I protected the pages of the politicians so that we don't get new editors defacing pages about notable people. As to the war in question, it is a current event, and likely there will be many edits. Not limiting the edits will likely give us more views. In my opinion, we profit more, if we leave editing open to anyone. (Yes, will need some watching), than if we lock down this page at the moment. This of course doesn't mean that we can't protect it in the future, if there's actual vandalism. And, as to the war: the figutes I have heard likely make it the biggest such conflict since World War II. --Eptalon (talk) 08:52, 26 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I was wondering if you could also protect other pages like the Donetsk People's Republic, Kyiv, Chernobyl and some other pages that have been getting high media attention. SHB2000 (talk) 00:57, 27 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Patrol Rights

Hello! I was given, then revoked, patrol rights for some reason. Why is this? Thanks, MrMeAndMrMeLet's talk 21:14, 1 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I looked at your edits, and to me they looked unproblematic, so I gave the right. Other admins pointed out that the patroller right was usually given to people who have been on this wiki much longer than you have been; for this reason, I removed the right again. Continue your good work, and you might get it in the future. Eptalon (talk) 21:18, 1 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for clarifying. I was a little confused as I had never applied or anything. To be frank I don't think I even deserve patrol rights yet. MrMeAndMrMeLet's talk 21:20, 1 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Keep up the good work you do, and don't worry about it too much. Eptalon (talk) 21:21, 1 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@MrMeAndMrMe: Occasionally, patroller and rollback can be given to editors even without a request if an admin thinks you could make good use of the right. Most of the time, this is granted by request, though. --Ferien (talk) 21:23, 1 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

circumcision in turkey and north cyprus

Hello, @Eptalon maybe you can understand me

I only want to give information on a important part of the culture in this two pages with sources, but this User Deppiyy allways deleted it and call me Vandalism.

In my mind he is the Vandalism not me. Because circumcision is a very big part in the culture in Turkey and North Cyprus. Look: [1]

--Nalanidil (talk) 00:13, 8 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I think that with many subjects, it is not only about giving information, but also about how you write about it. (see WP:NPOV). And always remember, even if the other person may not have the same opinion, he/she is still a person and deserves respect. Eptalon (talk) 00:17, 8 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

As you read what this user claimes, so it havent to do with respect anymore. He claimes that not every turkish men are cirumcised without sources. He made false statemants. The majority of Turkish Men are circumcised and I only want give this as information with source in the Article, but i see a portugese like him or her have more knlowledge about my paternal turkish culture. As you can read here also: [2]

Well then

References

Hello, thank you for your comments; I will just point out that while in Tukey, and presumably N. Cyprus, most people are muslims, there will also be minorities of people who aren't Mulsims; also note, that while most circumcisions are performed for religious motives/as a ritual, there are some which are performed for medical reasons. Don't ask me, how this is relevant to the N. Cyprus article. --Eptalon (talk) 00:42, 11 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
yes but the article is about north cyprus, and I wrote about the Turkish Muslim men from North cyprus do circumcision about religious and tradition reasons. Also there is the gurbeti a muslim roma group who performed circumcision. Nalanidil (talk) 00:15, 12 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Nalabidil, that's sad to hear; I had the impression, that pretty much anyone could write about anything here. Of course, at some point statements will need sources, but generally they are easy to find. At least I didnt keep you from writing about things, I just pointed out certain pitfalls. At least I will miss you. Eptalon (talk) 21:35, 14 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanky you are kindly, you was allways not against the circumcsion topic, as many are against this topic. The Anti-circumcision Lobby is too much here. Nalanidil (talk) 00:22, 15 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Male circumcision is mostly a cultural thing; it is common in Islam, and Judaism, amongst others, and a part of their culture. I here to write an encyclopedia, I am not here to judge a (mostly) religious practice. About a third of all men are circumcised. Eptalon (talk) 00:32, 15 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Oil wrestling

Hi user:Eptalon (plus any busybody who absolutely can not stop himself/herself from butting in).
I took a quick glance at your okay post at talk page:Oil wrestling. If someone asks for my recommendation (for now), then maybe I would say: "If one has a photo of a woman wrestling, and she is wearing at least kisbet (and then quite likely also something that functions like a body-suit or shirt etc.), then one can write about that in the wiki-article" (if the source is somewhat okay)."--(to be continued) 89.8.121.154 (talk) 22:14, 20 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

--If you are unsure how to proceed, then you might consider asking at English-wiki how to proceed in their article; They are sharp there - razor sharp; That is good.--For now, I am not too interested in the article on "our" wikipedia. (to be continued). 89.8.121.154 (talk) 22:16, 20 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

When people write encyclopedias - and not only on Wikipedia - then sometimes one can find "Comedy hour - involuntary", in an article.--I have a feeling that any contribution that you might add to that article, will be okay.--Not sure when I will check your talk page again. Servusz/Regards! 89.8.121.154 (talk) 22:16, 20 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, thanks for pointing that out. I am not sure if you are aware, but Commons also has an "images wanted" section, where I left a comment. Note, that I wrote a stub about erotic wrestling (for lack of a better term, the nude/bikini girls wrestling in oil as adult entertainment). It isn't difficult to find an image for that, so I picked one that I thought was sensible. My reason for being here is contributing to an encyclopedia; the subject "oil wrestling" is certainly notable/interesting, but it may need touching up here and there. Eptalon (talk) 22:25, 20 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Eptalon! I would like to add something, that is related to my first post in this thread; I have continued going thru "Recent changes"; I left a message on another Wikipedia [1].--If you have time, then please look thru that small edit. Oh, it looks like I forgot to mention that those words were from your Good Faith edit; If you possible have time, then I would be most grateful if you can let them know that the words came from Simple English Wiki (and "one" has not intended any copyvio). Thank you. Regards! 89.8.121.154 (talk) 22:47, 20 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

female wrestlers turkey

Hello Eptalon, I see you added sources but as you can see the picture there is not Oil wrestling. Its normal wrestling, nothing to do with Oil wrestling.

--Nalanidil (talk) 22:31, 20 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

That's what I found after 10-15 minutes searching, it may not be correct or complete. If you take oil wrestling as a sport, or a special form of wrestling, I would be astonished if there wouldn't be women competing. I mean there is en:Women's boxing, and boxing is something I'd say is a mostly male sport. If we take it for granted that the women also wear some kind of suit, then asking for a picture of an actual woman competing (and no, not the half-naked/bkini-type male entertainment form) isn't too far-fetched? Eptalon (talk) 22:42, 20 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
there is no oil wrestling for women in turkey, in public. Traditional oil wrestling has always been performed by men only. Nalanidil (talk) 23:01, 20 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Auf der Kehr

Could you take a look at Auf der Kehr? In the bibiography . Speleology section there is a book edited by Höhlenforscher. The listing has an issue with using wikimarkup inside a linked parameter. My problem is that the template used is in German and I dont know where to begin to clean up the issue. Could you look at that template and see if you can change it over to English so I can get it cleaned up and remove the error. Also, there seem to be 2 links on there, one of which is a 404 issue and the other I dont even thing is helpful for the aticle but again, in German..Any help would be appreciated. Creol (talk) 18:08, 22 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for trying. As the issue seem to not be fixable, I just removed the the entire bibliography (as it is written and tagged in German it is of no use here) and deleted all references that did not provide any useful information (2 quotes in German without context or translation and 2 refs which were just a single meaningless garble of letters), tagged the article as in need of references (unreliable as the is no way to know if they actually say anything) and complex. The opening sentence actually says (paraphrased) Auf der Kehr is a part of Auf der Kehr. Not exactly encyclopedic material there. So many issues.. would probably be easier to wipe it all and leave a stub in its place Creol (talk) 18:39, 23 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

All the 7 subcategories in that parent category were the categories listed on the RfD. My argument wasn't that there weren't enough pages to go in the category, it was that the category does not help the reader. --Ferien (talk) 16:20, 25 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The same applies to Wikipedia:Requests for deletion/Requests/2022/Category:2000s Czech movies. I am aware that WP:C1 can be used for categories that don't have enough pages,or you can create pages to add. --Ferien (talk) 17:02, 25 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Welcoming

Hi Eptalon,

I noticed on User talk:Onsterflik your welcome message went on the bottom of the page so when I posted a warning to the editor about using MOS, it went below yours, when it typically would be placed under the other warnings. Is there a reason why it would place the warning after your welcome message (which didn't have a line break and made it look part of your welcome message) instead of with the other warnings which is normal? PDLTalk to me!OMG, What have I done? 22:01, 3 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

No idea, all I noticed was that the user was creating articles about languagues/languages gorups, mostly of Indonesia. Without a deeper lookthe artricles looked fine. Thats why I welcomed the user. As to the placement of warnings- no idea. Eptalon (talk) 22:04, 3 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Ah ok. I know when I see welcome messages, they usually go at the top of the talk page so this may just be an oddball type of thing. *shrug* PDLTalk to me!OMG, What have I done? 22:06, 3 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
(talk page stalker) @PotsdamLamb: With warnings, Twinkle first looks to see if there is a section for the current month/year. If there isn't one, it creates one and puts the warning there. If there is already such a section, Twinkle assumes it is the last section on the page and just puts the warning at the end of the page. It's a limitation of Twinkle. And before you ask if we can fix it, we try to keep our version of Twinkle in sync with enwiki's, so it might have to be fixed there first. -- Auntof6 (talk) 22:07, 3 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Auntof6 Ok well it looks like Eptalon manually placed it (I don't see TW after the entry) and didn't use Twinkle which is why twinkle didn't read it and created a new section, but it didn't create a new section, it just tagged onto the end of the welcome message. Maybe in the future welcome's that are manually put on the TP should be placed at the top instead of down further? PDLTalk to me!OMG, What have I done? 22:10, 3 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@PotsdamLamb: Twinkle can "see" things that it didn't place, so that's not the issue. It just doesn't analyze exactly what's in the section. It put your warning at the end because it saw that there was a July 2022 section -- it doesn't check what's comes later on the page. I have seen somewhere that welcomes should be at the top, but I think not everyone remembers or knows that. -- Auntof6 (talk) 22:15, 3 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I manually moved the Welcome message to the top of the page.. Eptalon (talk) 22:16, 3 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Eptalon. I will see how it works. @Auntof6 I have seen that too. I cannot recall where though. PDLTalk to me!OMG, What have I done? 22:19, 3 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Edit conflict on Suicide

Hi Eptalon, we had an edit conflict on the article and I saved my version over yours because I had a lot of work to do to it (all fixed now and in the appropriate layout) as well as sister projects, etc. I did notice you also removed my words that are in the basic 2000 word list (ie with, will), so I was wondering why you would those single words and turn them into 3 or more words? Thanks. PDLTalk to me!OMG, What have I done? 21:54, 16 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

My purpose of that edit was very simple: Someone thinking about suicide is a medical emegency. The statement read may be a medical emergency. I prefer to have one call to an emergency line too many than someone thinking that the person about to commit suicide is fine, really. Eptalon (talk) 21:58, 16 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Ah ok. Well here in San Diego, we actually have a task force called PERT where licensed psychologists and other social workers ride with police officers and makes a determination in the field if they should be transported to the hospital. So while it may seem like a medical emergency, often times it is just a cry for attention. PDLTalk to me!OMG, What have I done? 22:16, 16 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Medical abortion

The information about abortion via drugs is covered at medical abortion and Abortion#Kinds of induced abortions. The first one, written by you, the second one, I'm not sure. They both have similar amounts of, but slightly different information. Should we link from Abortion to Medical abortion? Or move content, merge, or anything else? Lights and freedom (talk) 04:51, 17 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I am not a doctor, or medical professional. My understanding was: Abortion done with drugs is called "medical abortion". Abortion is the more general term, there are laso other means of abortion. Eptalon (talk) 07:56, 17 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
As far as I am informed, the drugs used work during the wholepregnancy, but people are advised to take them under supervision in the second and trhid trimester. And no, I have done a little onthe article abortion, but I haven't contribute significantly to it. Eptalon (talk) 07:59, 17 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Delete language articles

Hi Eptalon, you closed this RfD: Wikipedia:Requests for deletion/Requests/2022/Music languages. Towards the end of the RfD, I found two articles that weren't included in the discussion but were made by the same user. Fehufanga and MathXplore voted to delete them.

These two articles are Javanic languages and Sumatranic languages: no or almost no references mention them. I think you could delete them as part of this RfD; if not, I will nominate them for RfD separately. Lights and freedom (talk) 03:04, 22 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Random Question

Hey Ep! I was wondering if you've seen Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis featured on the main page's Very Good Article section? I haven't seen it at all and I was wondering if everything is in working order? Thanks! TDKR Chicago 101 (talk) 12:54, 12 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) @TDKR Chicago 101 It looks like a redirect for the article's blurb (such as Main Page/Article 20, which redirects to the blurb for Tropical Storm Barry (2007)) was never created. It's not displayed on the main page because of that. I don't know if it's okay for me to create the redirect at Main Page/Article 28, it's the next empty redirect. Perhaps Eptalon could do it. — *Fehufangą✉ Talk page 13:05, 12 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I created the page about the Gagauz people from Moldova with sources, because about the Gagauz language is already a page in simple English: https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gagauz_language. So i thougt it should also be an own page for the Gaguaz People who speak this language. Yet, the User Macdonald-ross deleted the page. This is realy not funny. Protection of my user pages

Hello Eptalon. I'm requesting that both my user page and user talk page be fully protected as I no longer am active on this project. If that is not doable, then semi-protection is requested. Thank you, and hope you are doing well, Razorflame 04:56, 7 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I have fully protected your user page; as to your talk page- do you think users (perhaps only autoconfirmed ones) should not be able to leave you a message? -The only cases I know/remember where pages were fully protected were thouseof User:Teenly (6.5 years old, died of Leukemia, 2009), and [User:Fylbecatulous]] (died of Huntington's disease, 2018)- with this in mind, I'd go with a semi-protection of the user page. Ass to the Talk page: since you are no longer active on SEWP, I don't expect people will leave many messages on your talk page. --Eptalon (talk) 07:36, 7 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
After some though, and given what I wrote above, I have "downgraded" the protection of your user page to semi-protected (only autoconfirmed users can change it). Given that you are no longer active in this project I don't expect there to be a lot of activity.--Eptalon (talk) 07:58, 7 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello dear ...... I hope you are fine.

The discussion period for the article (Shadi Rifaat Ashi) has ended. Therefore, I hope you will make a decision, and I hope you will review the sources again, as the sources are complete sources, real sources and sources that covered all the points of the article. When comparing the aforementioned character with foreign characters, we see that the character achieved an additional quality more than them, as the character is the highest viewership in the Arab world, and a character who has series and has directed international representative and artistic works.--Osps7 (talk) 11:46, 21 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

frottage

Hello @Eptalon, as you know, its allways the same, if i create pages or improve articles generally, there are other admins and users who dislike it or changend it, then when I give any comment, Im the bad person with a bad behaviour, this is unfortunately a pitty in wikipedia. So the page frottage, i created is about human sex, and i changend the penis in human penis, yet it was reverted and the topic of the page is also changend, totally out of concept, so please can you do something?. Thanky Nalanidil (talk) 14:17, 23 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, as far as I can see, other editors have added material to the article. It looks like you successfully started an article. As you probably know, edtors don't "own" articles. So rather than changing the things you don't like back, use the article's talk page to find a solution. I simply changed an image in that article. Eptalon (talk) 14:42, 23 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Eptalon, i thanked you for the image, it was in the sense of the article, but yet the other editor who add the statemants, its not longer the same page i created...anyway, i started the discussion page but...na ja egal...lassen wirs. There is so much bad energy in wikipedia, especially in the german and english category...really I call that energy vampires Nalanidil (talk) 14:49, 23 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Don't be afraid to write about controversial topics. Yes, itr needs more energy, and likely moew people will disagree, but it looks like this is a valid article, which has since been improved; so I really don't see where your problem is. Eptalon (talk) 14:57, 23 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Eptalon, my problem is...that mammals are included, because it was not created as a generally Page, it was only created for men with men (Humans) frotting. This was in my mind, to explain the frottage about human males, so the picture you included was fantastic. But with this mammals passage from the other user, in the article, yet it is out of the concept. Its not the same anymore. Nalanidil (talk) 15:10, 23 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Helping with a research project in Simplification

Hello Eptalon,

I'm reaching out to you because I am working on a research project on simplification, and I am looking to collaborate with domain experts.

A quick introduction: I am a researcher interested in the task of text simplification, and I am working towards publishing a resource in text simplification based on Simple Wikipedia (which is quite a rich encyclopedia). We believe this resource, which we will make public, could be valuable to educate and increase awareness of text simplification.

Some colleagues and I are looking to collaborate with domain experts in the creation of the resource. We've secured some budget for our research project, so there's the possibility to remunerate a few experts that would work with us.

I do not mean to spam you, so feel free to disregard/delete if you feel this is inappropriate (and I apologize). On the other hand, if you are interested, please feel free to reach out, either directly on Wikipedia or by email (phillab@berkeley.edu) and I would be happy to tell you more.
