Does simple have the contentious topics enforcement?

Could I / Should I / How do I copy my very unsimple user space pages here? Irtapil (talk) 12:04, 30 January 2024 (UTC) Irtapil (talk) 12:04, 30 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Copy and paste would work. But, some of the templates (user boxes) may not actually copy/paste, if they have not been created over here. Your user page is fairly long, so a lot of the stuff may not actually “copy” over (i.e. not exist yet here). WeatherWriter (talk) 14:00, 30 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

engagements[change source]

ARCHIVE
@WeatherWriter
Sorry if you got a billion notifications when I was fiddling there.
I've not copied over the engagements table yet (about a third of it disappeared today, but i can easily get an old version).
But what on earth is a simple word for engagements? (I still think that without the word "military" the word "engagements" fits a court case better than an airstrike.)
Also, can you help find some examples of similar pages from wars in the region so I might be able to translate enough Arabic for a stub (in the hope it will grow) or ideally find an existing article.

February 2024[change source]

Hello! Thank you for creating Category:Deaths by firearm in the Gaza Strip. However, we normally need at least three pages in a category before it is created. Because categories are a way to group together similar articles, there is no need to create a new category for just one or two articles. If you think there might be more pages to add to the new category, please add them now. Thank you. MathXplore (talk) 13:08, 2 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

OLD REPLIES
@MathXplore Currently we don't have any articles that can be included in that category. Ayesha46 (talk) 15:17, 2 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Ayesha46 @MathXplore
There are at least three pages I am currently working on it planned to work on soon.
  • Which step do you count as "creating" the category?
  • Do you mean "create source"?
That seemed to sometimes cause them to appear on wiki data automatically and I couldn't quite work out how / why / when that was happening? Irtapil (talk) 14:36, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
when you have created 3 pages or there are 3 pages available that comes in same category, at that moment you can create a Category and about Wikidata as much I can tell u from what I understand is that if you create a page then someone will definitely connect it to Wikidata be it a bot or real person, (you can connect it urself as well) what's ur point in not connecting page to Wikidata? I don't get it sorry. Ayesha46 (talk) 14:53, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Ayesha46 when I created the source they sometimes seemed to show up in wikidata immediately and I wasn't sure how that was happening. Irtapil (talk) 15:05, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
if you translate a page from another wiki it gets connected automatically otherwise someone else connect the page and if someone don't connect it, then a bot will connect Ayesha46 (talk) 15:10, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Ayesha46
I meant connecting the categories, not the pages.
But, out of interest, how does a bot know what pages to connect?
Irtapil (talk) 07:52, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
maybe because Spellings are the same most of time though I don't know how it connects let's suppose French, there's a chance it Google translates it and connect as well don't know exactly though, its just my assumption 😅 Ayesha46 (talk) 08:15, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Ayesha46: I don't think bots connect pages automatically. I know that if you create a page that has an interwiki in it, a bot will pick it up and make the connection. However, please don't put interwikis in articles; it's easy enough to make the connection manually by using the "Add links" link in the sidebar. -- Auntof6 (talk) 22:33, 7 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Auntof6 @Ayesha46 I think it might be automatic if it matches an English language category, or a possibly even a category in another language. Irtapil (talk) 15:58, 9 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Which step do you define as "creating" the category?
  • It seemed I needed to create the category before adding anything to it? So it will start empty?
  • I am possibly doing things in the wrong order?
  • But I'm not sure how I'd add things to categories that do not exist yet?
And how do I delete / un-create categories that are unlikely to ever get 3 pages?
Irtapil (talk) 13:26, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
all I say is: once the category exists you need to find or make at least three articles (or subcategories) to put there. Eptalon (talk) 13:32, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
and to get them deleted, you add a qd template, C1 (empty category) c2 (renamed category) or A7 (i think, page or subpage where user asks for deletion). Or simply blank the page Eptalon (talk) 13:36, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Eptalon I think I over compensated. Irtapil (talk) 03:40, 9 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

REPLIES
Hello @Irtapil, You can start categories empty if you have at least 3 pages to put in it. Add them after you have created the category. If you want to add pages to categories that haven't been created, include un-created categories on pages; they will appear red. You can click on that red category to create it after adding pages to them. To delete an empty category, simply tag it with C1. Also, please don't remove QD templates from pages. Only an admin can delete a page, and tagging is a way to inform them. Happy editing! – Cyber.Eyes2005Talk 14:00, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Also, I've populated some of the underpopulated categories you created and tagged the empty ones for deletion. You don't have to take any further action; an admin will delete the tagged ones soon. Best, – Cyber.Eyes2005Talk 14:07, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Cyber.Eyes.2005 I might have removed some before I knew what was going on, sorry. Did it all get fixed? Is there anything left for me to go back and tidy up? Sorry if I made some mess don't it backwards. Irtapil (talk) 07:47, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Cyber.Eyes.2005 I don't think I have intentionally removed any of those tags? But there may have been a clash of symaltanious edits at some point if I ended up overwriting the tagged version with the tagless one I had open. I'll view changes before I save and or check history to reduce the risk of that. Irtapil (talk) 03:50, 9 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Cyber.Eyes.2005 Or possibly, if they get deleted without much obvious evidence of prior existence? I might have recreated some deleted categories thinking I'd not created them yet. Irtapil (talk) 04:04, 9 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Cyber.Eyes.2005 @Eptalon currently trying to tidy up the redundant categories (in vs of, and West vs western, and abbreviation vs full name, etc.) tagging as minor edits so it doesn't make the feed too noisy, does that help? Irtapil (talk) 03:50, 9 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

category spam ?[change source]

REPLIES
@Cyber.Eyes.2005 @MathXplore @Eptalon
I'm also trying to fill some nearly empty categories to justify their existence. But I'm stressed because I'm not really sure what people meant by "category spam"? Too many new cats, or just to many edits?
Previously I would have thought the best thing to do was to add most things that belonged in the category as soon as feasible. But now I'm thinking maybe I'm supposed to add just a small assortment? But that seems unfinished?
Irtapil (talk) 04:04, 9 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think this is "category spam". If this is category spam, then all categories have to be deleted and the author has to leave this place. That is what spam means. On the other hand, I can understand the concern of overcategorization (w:Wikipedia:Overcategorization). We have seen many similar categories (locations vs. places, and their sub-categories, w:WP:OVERLAPCAT). That is where the concerns come from. MathXplore (talk) 07:38, 9 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@MathXplore@MathXplore someone accused me of "category spam" in the thread you linked. Was the concern too many categories not too much categorising? So if I have a meaningful category and 100 things fit in it, I may as well go ahead and add them all? Irtapil (talk) 16:05, 9 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Please never do that. If you plan to edit 100+ pages at once, please consider WP:FLOOD. In addition, having 100+ things for one category suggests that the category may not be specific enough, you should consider using specific sub-categories. MathXplore (talk) 02:26, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@MathXplore it was a hyperbole. Irtapil (talk) 05:20, 12 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Does it work if something like political "Category:Political parties by year of establishment" is entirely full of not yet created categories?
Irtapil (talk) 16:59, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Irtapil If you're asking whether an empty category can be created with only uncreated categories, like the two red categories in Category:Political parties by year of establishment, then no. A new category should have at least three pages/articles or three "subcategories," like Category:Political parties established in 1987 in Category:Political parties by year of establishment. I hope that answers your question. – Cyber.Eyes2005Talk 17:21, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
when we don't have enough pages, we often go for decades first:...in the 1980s Eptalon (talk) 18:09, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Cyber.Eyes.2005 No that doesn't really answer it, but @Eptalon does. I was wondering if "by year" could work if each year only had one or two in it, but grouping them by decade solves it well. So…
  • adding red linked "doesn't exist yet" categories is ok if they will be filled soon.
  • if a category is unlikely to have at least 3 pages, make it broader, e.g. decade instead of year.
  • "create" a category by clicking the red and making a page for it AFTER it had at least three pages in it.
  • the bit I'm still foggy on is how / when / by who things get added to the language interchange (wiki data)? If they exactly match en.wiki that seems to be automatic? But if they don't exactly match an en.wiki page when / how do I add them?
Irtapil (talk) 07:25, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
In many cases, the editor creating the article adds the interwiki links. If there is no exact match you add the closest match you find. Note that the links/item linked to can be changed later on... Eptalon (talk) 13:24, 11 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Eptalon
I don't mean links for the articles, I mean links for the categories.
Irtapil (talk) 17:21, 11 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Our category system has far fewer categories than the EnWP one. Also, generally, we don't classify by gender. So, if you use the translation tool, only pick categories that we actually have. Picking ones that we don't have might give a major hassle, because as outlined below, we need three entries for a category. Also, adding, removing or changing categories later is not controversial, most of the time. Eptalon (talk) 17:25, 11 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Look at Category:7th-century births to see that even that doesn't work... Eptalon (talk) 17:31, 11 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

category translation[change source]

REPLIES
@Cyber.Eyes.2005 @Eptalon @MathXplore
The issue I was trying to solve was that when using the translation tool to add pages here (pages not present in en.wiki or for which the en.wiki version is not the most comprehensive version) the non-English categories didn't show up at all in the tool unless they already existed here. So I was trying to do a "translate and then fill" approach. But I think I've worked out how to do that without causing problems now, I can add a step of adding two or three pages we already have before I create the new category.
A few of them where categories related to the current war in Gaza, for which the pages and categories both aren't here yet, but I'm working on it, and it got a bit "chicken and egg". The "make it more general approach maybe works, things like (hypothetically) "events in Gaza in n 2023" could be "events in 2023" and "events in the Gaza Strip" then I go back and male it me specific when I have 3 pages.
Irtapil (talk) 17:29, 9 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If I look at Category:Hamas, we do have more than 10 pages in it, so that's good. If I look at DEWP, they have it in Categoriers "Islamistische Partei als Thema" (Islamist party/parties), Palästinensische Parei als Thema (Palestinian party/parties), "Istraeöisch-Palästinensischer Konflikt" (Israel-palestian conflict, or similar). The conflict between Istaelis, Palestinbians, and possibly other (mostly Arabic) ethnic groups has been going on since the statehood of Israel (I think mid-1940s, coul be wrong). The problem that you have if you only group by year, you get many different otherwise unrelated categories and articles. Also, remember to push articles as far down the category tree as possible... @MathXplore That was my example of a useful and uplifting message, but it wasn't helpful to get it twice. Just a few relevant words would be much more helpful than two generic paragraphs, e.g. just "missing L in midde" or "R should be lowercase" and the category link. I don't know how your semi-automated tool works? Is a generic paragraph still quicker than link and a few words? Irtapil (talk) 02:19, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

What are the differences between them? MathXplore (talk) 09:17, 7 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

REPLIES
@MathXplore
Nothing, they are synonymous.
I was using the term "West Asia" in a few categories, but I noticed some existing categories used the term "Western Asia" so I added that as well to maximize the chances of being able to fill them.
The "West Asia" and "Western Asia" categories (geography, history, empires, regions, and places) probably should be consolidated into one of each, but I'm not sure which to use?
Can you think of a way to work it out? If so, I'll go back and tidy up any redundancy.

I wish these said what the topic was. The mystery messages kind of stress me, but I'll try to be brave and check.
Are they automated? or do you add them manually? Some things from this account seem to be a person and some seem automated, it's a bit confusing for me.

(talk page stalker) I totally get where you're coming from. Those messages can indeed feel like a bit of a mystery sometimes! I sometimes use WP:TW (also installed in English Wikipedia) for rapid response. MathXplore (talk) 11:33, 7 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@MathXplore In the spirit of "simple", can you please not add too much extra generic info with messages?
Sometimes it's good. I liked this one, "This message is not meant to discourage you from changing Wikipedia but rather to encourage the best possible writing from our authors. Please take a look at the Manual of Style and the welcome page to learn more about changing this encyclopedia." The words of encouragement were much appreciated, and I hadn't found the style guide yet, so that was useful.
But most of the time I would actually like very short messages, adding too much generic info is usually more distracting than helpful.
A few times below it has been hard to spot the problem you're pointing out because there is too much other information, e.g. "Welcome to Wikipedia. A page you made, Category:Poltical geography, may not meet our rules for new pages, so it will shortly be removed. Please use the sandbox for any tests. You may also want to read our introduction page to learn more about changing. Thank you." That had a lot of info that isn't applicable to category pages (the info about the sandbox etc.) so that was just distracting and I didn't even spot the typo in "Poltical geography".
This is a bit hypocritical of me, I can be very verbose at times, and I've done that in this message even? But I'm trying to improve that myself too.
You seem to be putting a lot of effort into teaching newcomers? Hopefully some feedback is useful?
Irtapil (talk) 10:53, 8 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, the message is based on uw-create1. This message is usually sent when an editor has made a page with issues. Many users are using this. You may suggest a rewriting at Template talk:Uw-create1. MathXplore (talk) 11:02, 8 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@MathXplore In that example the problem was that the generic "problem page" info is all about a typical article page, none of it applied to category pages, and all the extra irrelevant info made it harder to spot the actual error you were pointing out. I'm obviously not very well qualified to write a "problem category page" notice? But if there isn't something fitting available, just skip the extra info from the template? just write a very short message about the key point? e.g. "The category page you created was misspelled, so it will shortly be removed"? Irtapil (talk) 18:46, 8 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Many users use message templates. Major changes should be done with discussion. Please use template talk pages for such suggestions. MathXplore (talk) 02:21, 9 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Before adding a category to an article, as you did to "Category:Geography of the Levant", please make sure that the subject of the article really belongs in the category you have chosen. Categories that are not suitable will be removed from articles. If you are not sure what category an article belongs in, leave a message on the article's talk page. Thank you. MathXplore (talk) 11:43, 7 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@MathXplore Can you give an example of something that wasn't relevant? I thought everything I seeded to that was a place and in that region? But I might have made an error. I added a few organisations and events to the general category "Levant" but I thought I put only places in "Geography of the Levant"? Irtapil (talk) 09:15, 8 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
At special:diff/9346220, Category:Geography by continent has been removed. This is because Levant is not a continent. MathXplore (talk) 09:17, 8 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@MathXplore I think I need to write better edit summaries, I'm not sure why I added those. I think I was picturing three layers of hierarchy, e.g.
  • continents
  • Asia
  • Levant
But it seems I misinterpreted what the pipes are for again? Can you find me some info about what they actually do?
A more sensible person than me might just give up and avoid them? but I'm curious now.
Irtapil (talk) 18:31, 8 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I already told you to add only parent categories (special:permalink/9349038#Please_only_add_parent_categories_to_category_pages). The same thing can be said for all types of pages. Just add parent categories, not grandparent categories. For example, there are many places on Earth, but you don't have to add Category:Earth to all of them. Please see w:WP:PARENTCAT for more details. MathXplore (talk) 02:26, 9 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Capitalization of categories and pages[change source]

Please remember that we only capitalize proper nouns in titles. Category:Political Geography has to be Category:Political geography. Please be careful in the future. MathXplore (talk) 11:47, 7 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@MathXplore were there any other than "Nationalist"? I worked that out myself when it was a category of one, but you'd beaten me to it already. Irtapil (talk) 22:14, 7 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@MathXplore ok … nationalism and geography I suppose.
I was thinking of the category names themselves as titles, but I see what you mean now.
Are there any left I need to fix or have you already done it?
Irtapil (talk) 09:11, 8 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Category:Geographic Regions has to be Category:Geographic regions. MathXplore (talk) 09:14, 8 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
thanks, I understand now. Irtapil (talk) 18:32, 8 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Please only add parent categories to category pages[change source]

For example, there is no need to add Category:Locations in North Africa to Category:Locations in North Africa. The same thing can be said to other categories. MathXplore (talk) 12:01, 7 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

REPLIES
To double check I understand what you mean, you're saying don't add categories that match the page itself? (Double checking this time because a few times I thought I understood what you meant, but it seems I ended up running off in the wrong direction.)
A few seemed to use the form
What does that do? Or am I remembering wrong about that matching the page?
Irtapil (talk) 22:22, 7 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
We only add to articles, not categories. MathXplore (talk) 01:15, 8 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@MathXplore Thank you.
So, to makes sure I understand, what situation should I be using the format with the empty bit at the end?
Only on pages, not categories. But what else? What does it do? What is it for?

I don't know how to look that up in the guides because I don't know what that would be called?
Irtapil (talk) 08:55, 8 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
For example, we add to Science. We are doing this to make the main article of the category to be found easier and faster. You can read this at w:Wikipedia:Categorization#Sort_keys. MathXplore (talk) 09:00, 8 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category tree[change source]

I'm replying to the question asked on WP:AN. You can check out Wikipedia:Categories and Wikipedia:Categories#Category tree to understand how categories work here on Simple Wikipedia and what a Category tree, aka Cat tree, is. If you have any questions, feel free to ask on my talk page. Happy editing! – Cyber.Eyes2005Talk 20:13, 7 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Cyber.Eyes.2005 does it help answer West Asia vs Western Asia? Irtapil (talk) 22:24, 7 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome, and thanks very much for your changes to the Wikipedia article "Category:Poltical geography". However, please take a moment to review your changes for spelling, grammatical, capitalization, and punctuation errors before you save. This will help lessen the changes others must do to the article, and will help keep Wikipedia looking neat and professional.

This message is not meant to discourage you from changing Wikipedia but rather to encourage the best possible writing from our authors. Please take a look at the Manual of Style and the welcome page to learn more about changing this encyclopedia. Thank you. MathXplore (talk) 02:04, 8 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@MathXplore Is this about the same typo as below?
Is there something in particular I'm doing wrong vs the manual of style? or is that just a generic message?
Maybe add the style manual to the #Welcome message for future new arrivals? just seems useful to include.
I'll make my own bookmark list up there, I'll never find stuff in these threads.
Irtapil (talk) 08:48, 8 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I'm talking about the same typo, and I'm sending this message to any user having issues with spellings. To get feedback about your suggestion to the welcome templates, you can use Template talk:Welcome. MathXplore (talk) 08:52, 8 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to Wikipedia. A page you made, Category:Poltical geography, may not meet our rules for new pages, so it will shortly be removed. Please use the sandbox for any tests. You may also want to read our introduction page to learn more about changing. Thank you. MathXplore (talk) 02:07, 8 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@MathXplore Can you be more specific please? This notice is too generic to tell me anything useful. e.g. Sandboxing a category page obviously doesn't make much sense? and none of the rules in what you linked seem to be applicable to category pages? Irtapil (talk) 08:18, 8 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
A duplicate category with wrong spelling has been created. Since this cannot be a redirect, it has to be deleted. The category was deleted per QD G6. MathXplore (talk) 08:20, 8 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@MathXplore ok thanks, that makes more sense. Irtapil (talk) 08:23, 8 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@MathXplore Vaguely related to spelling, have I correctly deduced that you prefer categories aren't acronyms? e.g. PLO, DFLP, and PFLP? should I change others to be not acronyms? But I presume I leave Fatah and Hamas since they're a bit different. Is there a rule of thumb for what gets to be an acronym? Daesh and ISIS also seem like they belong as acronyms… So far I'm thinking expand EVERYTHING except Arabic acronyms where English speakers wouldn't recognise the expanded version, e.g. Hamas. Irtapil (talk) 08:32, 8 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Many acronyms are ambiguate, so in many cases, you have no reason to use acronyms as the category title. This is not my personal preference but many users may think in the same way. You may also want to read WP:FOLLOW MathXplore (talk) 08:36, 8 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@MathXplore But on a related note, for days and notes in my user space, does it work to put a colon in front of each category so it shows as a link and doesn't include the page in categories? e.g. User:Irtapil/List of engagements during the Israel-Hamas war (from Chinese) like I did in that page? Irtapil (talk) 08:22, 8 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Putting a colon will work but you have to use correct spellings. MathXplore (talk) 08:23, 8 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@MathXplore are correct spellings particularly related to colons or is that just an added reminder? Irtapil (talk) 08:33, 8 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, just a reminder. MathXplore (talk) 08:34, 8 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@MathXplore
did you add Middle East and North Africa to the page?
Irtapil (talk) 23:26, 8 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@FusionSub I signed that already, I just saved before I finished it. The "reply" button and the "add new topic" function get glitchy on a mobile if it's any more than a few words, so I saved it and switched to "change source" because that's a lot more stable. Huh, never seen that before.- FusionSub (Talk page) (Contributions) 16:42, 9 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@FusionSub
It's an eccentric glitch of using it through a browser on a mobile, using the reply button in Chrome there is currently a neat toggle to switch between a visual or source edit mode without saving, so that will help sometimes, but I've not seen it for new topics.
I also quite often start a new topic and save it blank to give me a section to draft my comments in. It reduces conflicting edits in very active talk pages.

Please stop category work[change source]

Auntof6

You are continuing to create categories that don't meet requirements here, and to add them inappropriately to articles. Some of the problems are:

  • Adding undefined (red linked) categories
  • Creating categories with fewer than three entries. Categories here are required to have at least three entries.
  • Overcategorizing: adding multiple categories to an article where two or more categories are in the same branch of a category tree. For example, adding both Category:Politics and Category:Politics in Palestine to Category:Political parties in Palestine.
  • Creating categories that make the category tree too complex for this wiki. We do not have, and do not want, as many categories as English Wikipedia has.

Please do not do any more category work at this time. I do not want to have to block you, but that will be the next step if you continue. -- Auntof6 (talk) 10:37, 11 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

As to categories, we often have a top-down approach: First, we add the more general category. When that category fills up, we create more specific categories, once we have the three pages. Also, we try to 'push' the article down the cateogry tree as far as possible: If it is in a category 'politics of ...', you don't need the category 'Politics' (as it will be a parent of 'Politics of ...'. See en:Bottom–up and top–down design if you have never heard the terms. Eptalon (talk) 10:53, 11 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Eptalon that's what i was trying to do. Irtapil (talk) 04:35, 12 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Auntof6 they said above that red linked was fine. 04:37, 12 February 2024 (UTC) Irtapil (talk) 04:37, 12 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Auntof6 i haven't created ANY with less than three, not since I war told that? I've usually been waiting till there's at least 4. There are red categories with less than 3, but it doesn't seem possible to add three simultaneously? So they have to be red for a while? Irtapil (talk) 04:48, 12 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Auntof6 there might be some that I'm in the process of removing that currently have one or two left? like there might be a couple left with "Western Asia" as well as "West"? Irtapil (talk) 04:51, 12 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Follow up - I did find one category yesterday that had just one page listed. But there were numerous pages that could have fitted in that category. I'm not sure when / why I got the order wrong that particular time. Irtapil (talk) 12:49, 13 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Auntof6 @Eptalon It seems the thing I was still doing wrong was adding higher order categories like a country and a continent? or "politician" AND "politician in (country)"?
I understand that now and I'll go back and fix all those if you unblock me.
I didn't see this till today. I need to read talk pages messages more urgently and/or thoroughly. I think a few times I saw a message from one person and didn't check right to the bottom to see if there were others.
Irtapil (talk) 05:08, 12 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It wasn't just one thing. It was the things I listed above and the fact that you generally don't seem to understand how categorizing and the category system work here. -- Auntof6 (talk) 06:39, 12 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Last warning[change source]

Auntof6

You have continued to make the kinds of changes I asked you not to do above. Your changes show that you do not understand how Simple English Wikipedia works, and you are creating things that others will have to clean up.

If you continue doing this, you will be blocked from editing here at least until 1) you demonstrate that you understand the issues with the work you have done and 2) the issues you created are resolved. -- Auntof6 (talk) 01:20, 12 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Auntof6 i really need to check my messages more often. I thought I was following all the advice given previously. 04:34, 12 February 2024 (UTC) Irtapil (talk) 04:34, 12 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You have been blocked indefinitely from changing Wikipedia in line with Wikipedia's blocking policy for continuing to make inappropriate category-related changes after being warned to stop. If you think this block is unfair, you may ask to be unblocked by adding your reason here below. If you cannot do this or the reason is private, please send an e-mail to simple-admins-l@lists.wikimedia.org and an administrator will look at your reason and reply. You may want to read our guide to unblock requests before asking to be unblocked. Auntof6 (talk) 03:18, 12 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Request reason(s):
Please unblock me. I do want to make a constructive contribution to this wiki (this was always my intention) and I now understand how to do that more effectively.

  • I was blocked for continuing to make inappropriate category-related changes after being warned to stop.

If I am unblocked I will

  • Check talk pages messages before I keep editing.
  • Stop focusing on categories and find more constructive ways to contribute.
  • Be more careful to avoid typos and other errors.
  • Draft things in my user-space as much as possible.

Some of what I have learned

  • Talk page messages are sometimes urgent. If I see a notification about a new message, I need to check it before I continue editing.
  • The editors at Simple Wiki like the current category system, so I shouldn't make large changes to it unilaterally.
  • A page shouldn't have categories that are multiple levels of the same branch of the category tree (e.g. “Political party in Asia” and “Political party”).
  • I shouldn't make redundant or synonymous categories (e.g. “West Asia” and “Western Asia”).
  • I should only capitalise the first litter of a category name and proper nouns.
  • Adding red-linked categories should be avoided.

Irtapil (talk) 11:21, 26 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Your request to be unblocked has been granted for the following reason(s):
I think you recognise many of the issues you caused before getting blocked and I don't think you will repeat the same errors, so I am going to unblock you. However, you will still be blocked from category work for the next 3 months and I would like you to follow Auntof6's advice below in what they would like to see. --Ferien (talk) 21:46, 11 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Non-administrator comment
  • Non-administrator comment — I see that Irtapil made some mistakes. I also see that in this appeal, they acknowledged the mistakes and also said they would not do them again. I would support an unblock for Irtapil. I did want to make a note that Fr33kman attempted to remove this ban appeal with the exact logic of No. I have no idea why this was done as Irtapil is not a sock master nor an LTA, which is the only time I have seen ban appeals ever just removed without formal declines. Administrator oversight or something I am unaware of. This ban appeal was restored by the blocking administrator. I am not aware of the situation involves this, but that sort of helps support my idea for an unblock and may indicate an administrator COI involved in this situation. WeatherWriter (talk) 21:12, 2 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    @WeatherWriter thank you. Irtapil (talk) 23:54, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Auntof6: "Blocking admin here…"
  • Blocking admin here: I'm going to leave this for another admin to decide, but here are my comments. The things Irtapil says sound good, but the amount of things they did that need to be cleaned up goes beyond category work and shows me that they don't understand how to contribute constructively here without making work for others. (To be fair, I'm only seeing some of the issues now that I'm going through all the user's work, and those issues haven't all been mentioned to the user.)
If the block is removed, I would like to see:
  • A temporary ban from category work.
  • Cleanup of some of the work they have done so far before doing anything else.
  • A reduction in the number of userspace subpages they have. Creating so many at a time doesn't seem to be helpful for the wiki, which is a requirement for user subpages.
  • All templates they created put to full use. There are a number that seem to have been created for a specific article, but which have multiple blue links to other articles that could also use the template.
Looking at the list, I see that it might not be reasonable, but it gives an idea of the kind of issues that the user created. --Auntof6 (talk) 05:18, 4 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Follow Up[change source]

Ferien + Auntof6
@Auntof6
  • What still needs "cleaning up"? I had a look but in most cases it looks like you did it already, I couldn't find anything?
  • are you saying I should add under used templates to additional pages? Just double checking I've understood before I so I don't run off in the wrong direction (that's what went wrong on the categories a bit).
  • The user space pages do all relate to work I am doing here. Some I haven't used much yet because I was blocked soon after I started them. (several always at once because I copied over some from other wikis with the intent of making local versions).
Irtapil (talk) 00:09, 28 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I've done some cleanup, but I don't think I've gone through everything. If you weren't prohibited from category work, I'd ask you to check the pages you've created and resolve any redlinked categories you find, but that might have to wait.
About templates, I'm saying that when you create one for an article, it's best to put it on all appropriate pages instead of just the article you created it for.
About the subpages, maybe work to get the articles created for some of them and see if there are any problems with that work. Then get the user pages deleted and continue with more. -- Auntof6 (talk) 03:30, 28 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Auntof6
templates: So for example, I should add Alphabet to every one of those blue links?
user space
  • How do I delete a user space page?
  • Would it help to combine the user space pages into a smaller number of longer pages?
  • Is it ok to leave the old as redirects to the combined page? or are redirects no better than the little stubs?
Irtapil (talk) 03:44, 29 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Templates:
alphabet is a sidebar template, whereas I was mostly thinking of the type of navbox that goes at the bottom of a page. With alphabet, I would look at the page and see how it would look. If the page already has an infobox at the top, you might not want to add the sidebar because that would be a lot of "stuff" all lined up against the right side of the page. If it's the other kind of navbox, though, then usually you would add it at least to the blue links that are in the body of the template.
One other note: when you bring a template from enwiki, please also bring the doc page. The doc page for alphabet needs to be brought over.
Userspace:
  • You can get a userspace page deleted by asking for quick deletion with the U1 option.
  • I don't think that would be helpful, but it depends on exactly what's in the pages. I don't think it would be helpful to combine a user page that's a full article, but it might be helpful to combine some that are just miscellaneous notes.
  • Redirects wouldn't be better.

@Auntof6 How do I request deletion? @Eptalon deleted one that I just blanked, but I'm not sure if that's the right way to do it? Irtapil (talk) 15:42, 29 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Auntof6 Is replicating alphabet bad or just not a high priority?
By the "nav boxes" do you mean the templates that are like the alphabet box but at the bottom of the page?
Irtapil (talk) 15:09, 29 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Ferien Thank you.
Is the category work ban fully automatic? or partly self enforced?
"21:49, 11 March 2024 Ferien talk changes blocked Irtapil talk changes from the namespace Category with an expiration time of 3 months (autoblock disabled) (per conditions of unblock. Blocked from category work, in the Category: namespace and out)"
  • Does able to edit = allowed to edit?
  • Or am I also supposed to self enforce a ban on adding or removing categories on other pages?
  • Am I allowed to make specific suggestions about categories, e.g. on the talk page, that other uses can implement if they think they area ok?
  • Am I allowed to just tag a trusted user with "check the categories on this page please".
(Sorry if this is a repeat? I thought I asked this on your talk page, but I cannot find it now, possibly I didn't save it properly.)
Irtapil (talk) 03:32, 29 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi there Irtapil. The category ban is automatic when it comes to creating/editing pages in the Category namespace, but also applies to adjusting categories to pages in all other namespaces. You are more than welcome to ask other editors about which categories may fit and/or use the talk page to suggest category changes, and this would not break the conditions of your unblock. Thanks, --Ferien (talk) 15:53, 29 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Ferien Thank you.
In that case, I already have a request, can you please delete Category:Entities in West Asia. I just noticed it is currently an empty redirect, and the category it redirects to isn't quite synonymous.
Irtapil (talk) 16:27, 29 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
First, redirected categories should be empty. Second, would you want Category:Entities in the Levant deleted also? I renamed the entities categories because entity isn't a simple term and everything in them was an organization. If you intended something else with those, I'd be interested to know what it was. -- Auntof6 (talk) 18:04, 29 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Auntof6 I just said it's currently empty? is it not empty?
That also looks like just an empty and redirect to "organisation"? If we can keep it as its own category with "organisations in…" as a sub category, then keep it, but not as a redirect. "Entity" is a broader term than organisation, it can refer to things that are both bigger, or smaller, or more abstract, or more specific than would usually be referred to as an "organisation". Irtapil (talk) 02:56, 30 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with Ferien's answer, but I'll just add that it wouldn't be good to ask other editors to make so many changes for you that it becomes a nuisance. -- Auntof6 (talk) 17:58, 29 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Auntof6 Yes I'll try not to over do it, I just wanted to check if I was allowed to do it at all. Irtapil (talk) 19:32, 29 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Auntof6 @MathXplore This notification is unhelpful for categories. The first paragraph even calls it an "article", and it seems to provide zero information about categories at all?
Giving people a lot of irrelevant information makes it slower for them to find the relevant information.
Adding irrelevant information is worse than useless.
You (or whoever controls what this says) need to make a separate relevant version of this for categories nominated for deletion, or you / they need to shorten this to only provide information that is relevant to everything this gets sent out for.
I honestly am trying to make a constructive contribution to this Wikipedia, but the conversations explaining how I need to change what I am doing are getting burried in irrelevant copy-pasta.
This is especially frustrating because this Wikipedia claims to aim to be accessible to people who struggle with English. This mission seems to be mostly aimed at readers? but I still really would expect admins at Simple English Wiki to be more aware of the need for clear and concise communication?
Irtapil (talk) 03:42, 15 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I don't understand why you think this is unhelpful for categories. Would you rather no one told you that a category you created is being considered for deletion? And as I said above, these messages are automatic: the person leaving them doesn't control what they say except for the actual reason they think a page should be deleted.
I agree that the term article isn't applicable for all types of pages that go to RFD. Maybe we can change that to page, but in the meantime I'm sure you can make the mental accommodation and understand that it's a small inaccuracy. We would almost certainly not make separate versions for different types of pages, because the process here are the same for all types of pages.
We don't aim for people who struggle with English. We aim for people whose English skills are not high. They aren't necessarily struggling. And yes, when we say that, we are talking about readers. Editors actually need a high level of English to be able to understand how to simplify things. -- Auntof6 (talk) 03:53, 15 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Auntof6 Because it has no information about how categories work on Simple English Wikipedia? It would have been much more helpful if it mentioned or linked some of the guidelines we discussed above. Irtapil (talk) 04:18, 28 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Notifications about category deletion[change source]

EXAMPLE

This is how the other English wiki notifies about category deletions. Irtapil (talk) 04:01, 15 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion nomination of en:Category:User Mtei

A tag has been placed on en:Category:User Mtei requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. DISCUSSION

They provide specific information about categories. Irtapil (talk) 04:01, 15 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This is not English Wikipedia. It is Simple English Wikipedia. There are a lot of differences here. The quick deletion process here is not the same as enwiki's speedy deletion. The RFD process here is not the same as enwiki's other deletion processes. We don't have the same rules or criteria, and we aim to keep our processes simple as well as language in articles. If/when you get unblocked, you can propose a change at Simple talk. Until then, please stop trying to continue working here through your talk page. -- Auntof6 (talk) 04:27, 15 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Auntof6 "There are a lot of differences here" - That is exactly why some relevant specific info would be helpful on these notifications. Obviously it would need to be information relevant to Simple English Wikipedia, that was just as example of a helpful message.
What I liked about that example (the reason I shared it) is it has very specific information about what is required for a category on en.wiki and why mine didn't qualify "because the category has been empty for seven days or more" on Simple Wiki the equivalent might be "new categories must contain at least 3 pages".
The example I shared above also links relevant specific help pages. For a category being deleted on Simple Wiki the page Wikipedia:Categories would be much more helpful than "What Wikipedia is not".
The notifications I've seen here in Simple Wiki didn't actually tell me what I had done wrong or how to fix it. I had to try and work it out or tag the person who wanted my category deleted.

@Auntof6 Did you see this? Irtapil (talk) 01:21, 30 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. You have to give me some time to respond. Sometimes I want to think about how to respond. Sometimes I'm busy with other things. -- Auntof6 (talk) 02:01, 30 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Editing while blocked[change source]

RfD nomination of Category:Geography of Eurasia[change source]

An editor has requested deletion of Category:Geography of Eurasia, a page you created. We appreciate your changes, but the nominator doesn't believe that the page meets Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in the nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").

Please comment on the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Requests for deletion/Requests/2024/Category:Geography of Eurasia and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also change the page during the discussion to address the nominator's concerns. But you should not remove the requests for deletion template from the top of the page; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you very much. Auntof6 (talk) 07:32, 4 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion of pages[change source]

Auntof6 + Kk.urban

If you intend to tag any pages you have created for deletion, such as articles or templates, please add G7 to the pages. This will place them in the quick deletion category per user request. Kk.urban (talk) 19:20, 29 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Auntof6 said to use a different category? Irtapil (talk) 19:37, 29 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Irtapil What do you mean by "a different category"? What did Auntof6 say to use? Kk.urban (talk) 19:41, 29 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Do you mean where I said to use U1? That was for userspace pages. For articles, you can use G7 if it meets the requirements ("only if most of the page was written by that author and was created as a mistake"). -- Auntof6 (talk) 21:46, 29 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Auntof6 @Kk.urban is there a list of categories somewhere? Irtapil (talk) 00:34, 30 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Irtapil: What categories are you referring to? -- Auntof6 (talk) 01:05, 30 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

QDs on your own user pages/subpages[change source]

Auntof6

Hi, Irtapil. When you request QD on one of your own pages, please specify the QD reason. It makes it easier for the admins to process, because we don't have to look at the history to verify that the owner is the one making the request. Thanks! -- Auntof6 (talk) 22:17, 29 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Auntof6 is this the same thing as the person above is taking to where you also replied? Irtapil (talk) 00:35, 30 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Irtapil: I'm talking about your QD request on User:Irtapil/WikiProject Politics in PNG. You just put QD on it without specifying a reason. If you're making the request manually, please remember to give the reason. For example, you could have put U1 on the page. If you use an automated tool, such as Twinkle, it prompts you to specify the reason. -- Auntof6 (talk) 01:03, 30 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
does if still need doing? Irtapil (talk) 01:20, 30 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I meant I was wondering if the page was already deleted.
Is this ok? User:Papua New Guinea if there's no chat sheet for the codes can i just wrote in a short reason?
Irtapil (talk) 03:02, 30 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
We really prefer to see one of the designated QD reasons on the QD request. Also, when a user asks for one of their own pages to be deleted, it's best to use the code for that instead of the "created by accident" code. That's because the user-page code isn't likely to be questioned.
If you mean the codes for the different QD reasons, you can see them at WP:QD. There's a general list that can be used for any namespace, and lists that are specific to certain namespaces. If you use Twinkle, it gives you a short description of each option. Just be aware that those short descriptions don't include all the requirement for each one. For example, the short description for option WP:QD#C1, empty categories, doesn't include the fact that the category is supposed to be empty for 4 days before nominating. Look at the full description on the page I linked to get the details. -- Auntof6 (talk) 04:59, 30 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
For somewhere called simple wiki this place is not very simple, this seems a lot more complicated than it needs to be. Irtapil (talk) 00:59, 31 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the link, but it doesn't seem to list the codes anywhere? The page you linked seems to want me to use words, which are much easier to remember for a task I will only need to do occasionally, so I'll follow what that page says. Most of the words are pretty much how I'd explain it without looking it up anyway. I am unlikely to be deleting stuff very often. I'll be more cautious about creating pages from now on. Irtapil (talk) 01:56, 31 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If you use twinkle to mark a page for deletion, it has the code and then, right next to it, the words. See Wikipedia:Twinkle/doc#/media/File:Twinklespeedy3.PNG for a picture of what I mean. Thanks - PDLTalk to me!Please don't eat da 🐑! 00:24, 1 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Your talk page[change source]

Auntof6

Hi. A couple of things about your talk page.

First, I noticed that the page is getting a little long. Would you be interested in setting up automatic archiving? You certainly don't have to, but it could make it easier for both you and others to use the page.

Second, the notes you have at the top are something that really belongs elsewhere -- either on your main user page or a subpage. Again, you don't have to move it, but please consider doing so.

Thanks for your consideration. -- Auntof6 (talk) 05:02, 30 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Just to help you out more, I would be happy to help you set up an archive of your talk page, with your permission. I would need to know how many days since the last comment you want before it gets archived, and how many topics you would like left on the page regardless of the last comment. For what should not go on here:
  1. Any categories
  2. Any templates
The reason being that it puts your talk page in those categories (whether they are made or not), and the templates will take effect on your page and transclude to the actual template. If they are also not already created, they show up in the wanted categories we maintain and use to import or create a certain threshold. Thanks - PDLTalk to me!Please don't eat da 🐑! 00:22, 1 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@PotsdamLamb No thank you for now, I want to find a home for the notes first.
  • Can you give a link to some archiving instructions for later?
  • I thought :Category:example stopped the page being added to the category? Does that not work on simple Wiki? They seem to be invisible until I do that, so I thought it changed it to a bare link?
  • Is there a way to disable template categories for use in drafts or notes in my user space?
Irtapil (talk) 05:33, 1 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Help:Archiving a talk page
For the categories, typically they do. For templates put template name so they aren’t pulling your page in.
For your notes, you can create a subpage for them and then create a link on your user page, something like User:Irtapil/Notes and just add that link on User:Irtapil for quick access. If you look at my page at the bottom you’ll see where I link to my subpages. The talk page is basically a way to communicate with others and when it’s cluttered with notes and links to stuff it’s hard for others to follow. Like Ao6 said, you don’t have too, however, it is preferred WP:Talk page. Thanks - PDLTalk to me!Please don't eat da 🐑! 05:46, 1 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
One example is your keep template you have up top. It should be vk. It will not show the actual template but you can copy/paste it to use it later, otherwise the template is on your page. Thanks - PDLTalk to me!Please don't eat da 🐑! 05:52, 1 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@PotsdamLamb I already do that for lists of favourites etc. but I meant for testing formatting and layout in drafts, or using a template like that one as a list of quick links in my notes on a topic? Is there a majic word I can use, something like adding the ":" for bare categories? Irtapil (talk) 12:53, 1 April 2024 (UTC) edited Irtapil (talk) 12:55, 1 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
On drafts you can use the template with no issues. Not all templates are over here on simple though. Once you have an article that’s approved to go to mainspace the template can be brought over. Thanks - PDLTalk to me!Please don't eat da 🐑! 17:34, 1 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Auntof6 sorry I thought I replied to this a couple of days ago. I'll try to find a better home for those notes. Irtapil (talk) 05:35, 1 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Example Outline[change source]

@user:Auntof6, where can I find an example outline? You said there's some common sub-headings that you prefer specific names for here, it would be handy to have an example article outline? Irtapil (talk) 13:03, 1 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know of a sample outline, but Wikipedia:Guide to layout has information about layout. -- Auntof6 (talk) 13:41, 1 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
