Patrolling categories

According to the patrol log, you marked Category:Indian comedian as patrolled. When you patrol new categories, please do the following:

  • Make sure the category itself is properly categorized. This category wasn't categorized at all.
  • Make sure the category has an appropriate name. A category like this should have a plural name, not a singular one.
  • If the category has fewer than three entries, either 1) leave it unpatrolled or 2) flag it with {{popcat}} and leave a message for the creator (there's a template for that). This category had only one entry.

Only warnings

I noticed that you left an "only warning" for IP 24.56.73.162. You might not have realized, but the "only" warnings, which are level 4im warnings, are not another level of warning that you leave after a final warning. They are used when a user's vandalism is so bad (for example, cyberbullying or threats of violence) that the usual graduated warnings are not going to be used.

It can be tricky using these with an IP, because if too much time goes by before more vandalism, we start again with lower-level warnings anyway, no matter what other levels have been given. Because of that, even the "final" warning that this IP received on March 21 should have been a lower-level warning because the previous warning was over a week before. Hi @Auntof6:, you are right. I was unaware and thought it as another level of warning, sorry about that. I thought the situation was not that bad to report so I thought of giving a warning but the thing turned out to be tricky so I made mistake. But now I think I understand about the situations. Thanks. While editing I often come across the pages like this and this where pages have very little info and I might not be able to add in it and was left like that since long time. Hello @Global-Plus:, as Auntof6 mentioned we handle many things differently than enwiki or any other wikis. We currently have many tv series related article or other related article similar to the ones you mentioned but there was never need of those templates. And I don't think we use those templates here so sorry about that but I believe we can still make those article better without those templates. Hello @Pvsbx:, you cannot redirect article to enwiki directly. Instead you can can create a simplified version of enwiki article here on simplewiki using basic english and link those articles through wikidata which is at the buttom of the bar at left hand side of page. Wrong is not Simpler. Simpler is Often Incorrect.

When people get something wrong, they often defend themselves by saying "But I was just trying to make it simpler for them," the assumption being that one must agree with the erroneous person that we are both superior to the un-named other, and must thus join the well-meaning effort to inform the poor unenlightened.

Comparative advantage is not competitive advantage. Donald Trump thinks they are the same thing. Two of his very senior advisors, Peter Navarro and Stephen Miller among others, seem to believe they are. Many people stand to gain monetarily from keeping him confused.

Competitive advantage and comparative advantage often lead in different or opposite directions. Virat Kohli is probably better at sweeping floors than I am. He is faster, stronger, and has better eyesight for catching the bits of dust I might miss. He could wipe the floor with me in a mopping competition. He has competitive advantage over me. Nevertheless, the world is a better place if he sticks to cricket and I sweep my own floor. If the President of the United States proposes a tax on cricket bats and a subsidy on plane fare in order to get Kohli to mop my kitchen, people should oppose that "reform."

Telling people that competitive advantage is related to comparative advantage when they are looking in the Simple Wikipedia is the wrong thing to do. It supports ignorance and obstructs knowledge.

  • The article should have more categories. It says the subject is a comedian, singer, and writer: add categories for those. There should be a category for his birth year and the category Category:Living people. He should also be in Category:People from Kathmandu.
  • There should also be a defaultsort. You could copy the one in the English Wikipedia article.
  • The article has a Wiktionary link for the word versatile, but Simple English Wiktionary has no such entry. In any case, it's better to use simpler words than to link to Wiktionary.
  • References: it would be good to add more parameters to the citation templates. Good parameters to add are publisher, accessdate, and date.

@MTKASH:, I added some birth related category, living people category and added where they are from. I replaced the word "versatile" with "adaptable" which was in Simple Wiktionary, and since the subject can adapt in various roles in movies I think this word can be used. And regarding citations read Wikipedia:Citing sources. Yes, new users may not be able to meet the requirements of the articles but the old users here are very friendly. I checked the reference you gave they proved subject is a medium level social worker. Most of those sources are not reliable or are not good source. So, taking that as a note the page was unable to meet our notability guidelines. So it was deleted. I can neither delete nor undelete page, admins do that here. Help needed

Hi there yesterday i removed lots of unreliable sources from Mark Ryan (singer-songwriter) page and there are other youtube sources and mtv sources which are not connected to him. For example: there the article said that the singer is featured in MTV and kept youtube link there but i followed the link and found out fake MTV youtube channel with just two low quality seems like local concert videos of other peoples. Here is what I suggest, you read the notability guidelines once, see the references in enwiki which are good and subject related and recreate page with good references of notability. Clearing VIP

Hey, you don't need to clear a VIP entry as soon as the user is blocked, even if you made the report. Give the blocking admin time to reply to the report so everyone has a chance to see the outcome before it's removed. Possible non-notable organizations

Hello BRPever, can you please take a look at Veer Foundation an article about a non-profit organization but if you look at the sources all of them are about the CNN-IBN campaign "Veer" which is unrelated to this organization and Mission Zindagi also has the same issue as the sources are about another organization named "Project Zindagi". Both articles were created by the same user who is the founder of these organizations and to me, it sounds like the creator is trying to mislead the reviewers by providing sources about a similar topic. Hi, BRPever. You might have noticed that I changed the Manoj dab page you created. If the only thing on the page is people who have the given name, then it's not a dab page. I changed the page to a given name page, which matches the enwiki page with the same content. Enwiki also has a dab page, but it has other content.

A dab page can list people with the same given name if they are all known by just that given name (without a surname). Examples of that would be people who don't/didn't have surnames (such as people who lived before they were commonly used), and people who are known by only a given name (like certain entertainers including Cher and Madonna, or people like royalty, nobility, and popes). Notability

Hi BRPever, I recently closed (as keep) a discussion for RFD on a band What Is This?, which you argued quite correctly met the notability guidelines. There was a comment made that this was Simple and not enwiki so the guidelines were not relevant. There are guidelines on Simple for notabilty in music, so don't be afraid to use them. And as you also correctly pointed out, if there isn't a guideline here, we usually do default to an enwiki guideline. @Wekeepwhatwekill:, no you are not disruptive but there are two kinds of Deletion requests, WP:Requests for deletion and WP:Quick deletion. There are some differences between them as you can see in Wikipedia:Deletion_policy#Overview. So, if it is a clear-cut case using Quick deletion can be a better idea. You can put your reasons in Quick deletion requests as well. You can either add {{qd|reason}} or do it with the help of twinkle (Wikipedia:Twinkle/doc#QD_(quick_deletion):here it is explained). Recent changes

  • Admins will not be able to unblock themselves if they are blocked by someone other than themselves. This is because it can cause damage if someone else takes over an admin account and other admins can't block them. If this is a problem for your community you can report it on Phabricator. You can also ask questions on Meta. There is a discussion on Phabricator about how to solve this if two admins fight with each other on a small wiki. [1]
  • Small SVG images are now bigger when you see them in MediaViewer. [2]
  • You can go to a section from the edit summary by clicking on the section name. Before this you had to click on the arrow. [3]
  • When you jumped to a footnote that was referenced several times in an article it could be difficult to see where you were in the text. Now there are jump marks and highlights to help you find your way back. [4][5]

  • Recurrent item The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 11 December. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 12 December. It will be on all wikis from 13 December (calendar).

  • New accounts will need passwords that are at least 8 characters long. Admins, interface admins, bureaucrats, oversighters, CentralNotice admins, global renamers, check users, stewards and some other user groups will need passwords that are at least 10 characters long. This is because an attacker could cause damage to the wikis if they took over these accounts. [6][7]
  • When you hover over a footnote it will show you the reference as a pop-up. This is so you don't have to jump down to the bottom of the page to see a reference. This will happen in 2019. Some wikis already have gadgets that do this. You will be able to turn it off. [8]

Recent changes

  • Some templates that show notices about the content of the page will now be shown on the mobile website. In many cases they were hidden before. [9][10]
  • Admins can no longer unblock themselves, except for self-blocks. A blocked admin can block the user who blocked them but no one else. This is so no one can block all admins on a wiki without being stopped. [11]
  • Advanced item The ParserMigration extension has been removed. It compared the result of two versions of the MediaWiki wikitext parsing pipeline. It was used when we moved to the Remex parsing library instead of Tidy.

Problems

  • <ref> tags can use parameters such as "name" or "group". For example <ref name="adams" group="books">. If a <ref> tag has more than two parameters all parameters are ignored. You don't get a warning that they don't work. This will soon be fixed. [12]

  • Advanced item tiles.wmflabs.org and wma.wmflabs.org will stop working. They have no maintainers and run an old operating system. Tools which use it could stop working. This includes the mapnik gadget, hill shading, and hike and bike layers. New maintainers could help out and keep it going. [13]
