  5. Jeanne Calment is officially recognized as the oldest living person between 11 January 1988 and her death on 4 August 1997. However, a study by Nikolay Zak has disputed her claimed age. Earlier, Carrie White, who died in February 1991 at the claimed age of 116, was recognized as the oldest living person, before being debunked.

Charlotte Hughes has officially been verified as the third oldest living person behind Jeanne Calment, who died in 1997 at the claimed age of 122, and Lucy Hannah, who died just four days later at the claimed age of 117 years, 248 days. However, Jeanne Calment's claimed birthdate 21 February 1875 has been disputed in a study by Nikolay Zak and Lucy Hannah debunked, as evidence suggests that she was most likely 20 years younger than she claimed.
