Pope Benedict XVI (Latin: Benedictus XVI; 16 April 1927- ), born Joseph Alois Ratzinger is a German priest of the Roman Catholic Church and the 266th Pope. Benedict is the current leader of the Catholic church, the Bishop of Rome and the Sovereign of the Vatican City. He was elected the Pope on 19 April 2005 following the death of Pope John Paul II.

Ratzinger was ordained as a Catholic priest in 1951. He was a professor at several German universities, including the University of Bonn and the University of Münster. He also taught at the University of Tübingen.[1] and the University of Regensburg.

In 1977, Ratzinger became both a Cardinal and the Archbishop of Munich and Freisingin.
Cardinal Ratzinger was Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.
He became Dean of the College of Cardinals. He was a close friend of Pope John Paul II.

In 2005, he was elected Pope at the age of 78; and he chose to be called Benedict XVI.[2]
Benedict is the first pope from northern Europe since Pope Adrian VI.
